Fuji X-Pro 2 Hands-On Field Test With Nathan Elson

  • The X-Pro 1 was the first mirrorless from Fuji, and is largely responsible for us having the brilliantly designed Fuji X series. The X-Pro 1 served many photographers well, but it was getting a bit long in the tooth. We now have an upgrade with a new sensor, interface, and EVF. Is the new X-Pro 2 the new gold standard for mirrorless photography?

    I can't wait for the X-T2 with the new 24mp sensor. But please, when and if it comes out we don't want an X shooter to do the review. We want an honest review from Chris and Jordan only. You're the best guys.

      Nathan is an X-shooter but a couple of things about that. Fuji does not require X-Photographers to be exclusive and I'm pretty sure he isn't. Also, if you check out his blog/channel you will see he can be (at times) brutally honest about what he sees as a flaw or issue with Fuji. I find his images a bit stylized and not really useful for showing IQ in general, but he does know his stuff.

    Best photography related videos on TH-cam, ever. As simple as that. I dunno how you do it, but you're always so natural. These are the only photo vids I look at where I'm often finding myself watching it with a smile on my face. Keep it up!

    After watching the official Fuji videos about the X-Pro 2, this video was VERY much welcome! They don't show off their cameras that well. Nathan's video on their official page was great, just as it was here. Great work, I own te xt-1 pair with 35 1.4 and 23 1.4 and I am anxiously looking forward to the xt2 this June. That pull up ISO switch would be great! Started shooting with 35mm film which is why I jumped onto the xt1 so quickly. Hopefully they add that small feature to it as well.

    I will own this camera. It is everything that I want. I love using fully mechanical cameras so, just the body style with dials for all of the major settings in the places they are alone make this camera a must own. Fujifilm has been doing amazing things lately with their sensors. The only negative of this camera for me at least is the mediocre video performance but, I know that just raw image quality does not make the shot so for the little amount that I shoot video I will just have to work a little harder. The image quality in good and bad lighting that fuji has been pulling off is just absolutely beautiful.

    Do you recommend investing into the new X Pro 2? I want to switch from my Nikon d7000 to the fuji system because I worked a lot with analog nikon fes lately and loved the compactness. Buying the fuji X pro 1 with the 16-55 2.8 results in paying 1500 euros here in germany. Investing in the x pro 2 results doubling the price.... I would have bought the X-TI but I hated the EVF lag while autofocusing... So maybe I would use the OVF most of the time. Does the X Pro 1 still deliver?

    Allways nice to see the CSTV reviews. For this camera I did expect an indepth view on the autofocussing though (in low light, moving subjects etc etc). That is one of the biggest problems with the X-Pro1 (I owned one). Pitty.

    One reason Fuji _should_ go all-in with video features is to sell more lenses. I'd love to be able to use their lenses, but without great video, there's no point to buying into the Fuji system. If I could use their lenses on my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, I absolutely would; Fuji knows their shit when it comes to lenses.

  • @jonhermannsson9231

    great show as always - I find it interesting how much hype the original Xpro and X100 got - and of course because of that I had to get the X100 - yes the images where nice and lens was good - but it was absolutely the worst focusing camera I have ever owned ! - I was able to play with the XPRO for some time and it was the same - I eventually got the X100s and yes it was an improvement as far as focus - but I found that I like the images better in the X100 - my X20 just blows the X100 focus away :) So for me yes I like the Fuji colors and image but really get frustrated with my Fujis - Xt1 and X100 and X100s and X20 - great lenses but no IS on primes so a real bummer - of course lenses are a bit heavier then that of M43 -
    I love Touch LCD and Touch Shutter - and of course Fuji will never implement Touch LCD or Touch Shutter -
    Yes the Xt1 and Xpro 2 will have a bit better IQ then that of the Panasonic GX8 due to larger sensor - but I just cant compare the joy of using the GX8 over the Fujis - but of course it is all a persona preference - Wish Fuji would implement IBIS - but that will not happen either - GX8 has a great contrasty BW as well :) - so does Sony A6000 and A7's -
    Yes in perfect light and shooting a still model the XPro1 was manageable - but to me horrible for street shooting and anything that moved and just struggled so bad with low light focus etc etc -
    I have a feeling that those who are Purists and like retro styling will adore and love what ever Fuji will come out with - and regardless of performance - as to me the X100 showed, touted to be this awesome camera - but in reality yes great looking and yes had both Optical and EVF with most just using the EVF but so many down sides - but still remains a legend - while other cameras will just not get a fraction of the recognition but are better

      @borispradel1037 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm reading this comment in 2022. And now there's this trend of coming back to basics, so the Xpro1 is a sought out camera. I'm currently using manual lenses on my Xpro1 for street photography. I just use the OVF and the sunny16 rule minus one stop on the lens aperture or exposure time for metering (as it is a crop sensor camera). I also have a Sony A7C for fast action, but I enjoy shooting with the Xpro1 more and its color science is so much more pleasing than Sony's. As you may know by now Fuji did include IBIS in a couple of cameras and also a flippy screen.

    Thanks for the review. IMHO, the only problem with doing camera reviews before a camera is finalized is that it can make the review irrelevant and also the reviewer unable to truly critique the camera because he/she doesn't know if the concerns will be addressed in the production unit or not. As a result, I recommend not to review cameras until they are finalized. I mean, who wants to know what a camera "might be like?!" I think playing around and understanding a pre-production camera can help you write the script. Then wait till the final product is out and do a quick shoot with the final product.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +RealWorld Endo We'll be doing a short review of the unfinished aspects of the X-Pro 2 when we get a production unit next month. We just felt this camera was exciting enough to warrant an early look, since many of the improvements relate to handling. Also, would you pass up an opportunity to look at a new flagship camera before the announcement day?
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheCameraStoreTV I understand being first. How about the reverse, doing a short pre-production announcement and a longer production review. That way you'd be first to showcase the camera and build the excitement, announce potential specs; but really not do a review the delivery of those specs until they are finalized in the production unit. I know there are a lot of people on the internet who do pre-production reviews; but I look at you guys at a different caliber and a trustworthy source. That's why the recommendation. Keep up the good work! :)

    Fujifilm X-Pro is very good compact, but it has still common sensor (however without low-pass filter and with unique anti-moiré system of sensor "pixels" layout). If I am a studio photographer, I will choose Sigma Quattro compacts. Their three layer sensors create (technically) an amazing and unique pictures, how we can see for example on DPReview or Imaging Resource etc.

    Picked a clean one on Offerup for $700. For me it's the Goldilocks of the X-Pro line. The Pro1 was ancient and the Pro3 was just weird. This one feels way more solid than the 3 (got one used for $1100 and sold it after I acquired the 2), I appreciate the weather sealing and I don't mind the non-articulating screen. To me it's 90% of what a 3 is but at a much reduced cost. It is currently my go-to body for street and portraiture.

    I've watched your videos for a long time now and I don't know if it's because the camera is pre production but you seemed to skip over a lot of features. No real autofocus test on moving subjects or in low light and ISO testing. Does it still only shoot raw up to 6400 iso etc. I always enjoy your videos and there normally always very thorough but this one seemed to miss the mark. finally an X Pro 2,
    I hope when you get the full production camera you do a more real review, but I am already disappointed, in 2016 no articulating touch screen

    x-pro2 looks bloody amazing! Nice specs, the x-e2s is a bit of a let down in regards to specs but the xpro2 wins hands down!

      Totally!!!!! I'm just hoping that video quality is much improved the bad quality of the X-T1.. I've had my X-T1 for more than a year now, but only used its video once

      Yeah fuji and video dont really go well do they, specially with autofocus, so annoying! And no mic socket? but then its really a stills camera, video is just an afterthought really, an added bonus i guess!

      Many fujifilms have a mic jack just like this one it seems.
      They just lack the headphone jack for proper monitoring.
      Then X-trans and video don't mix. but that's for another day.

    It may be a dumb question, but if you categorically do not like OVFs, to a point that you think they're stupid, why use the X-Pro line and not the XE?

    6:37 What does Nathan say where it's bleeped? "I've been shooting a bleep ton of black and white." I just can't figure it out!

    You need those gloves but you don't need anything to cover your neck? Anyway, greetings from Finland, it's like -25 C here right now and way too much snow.

    So, for someone like Nathan Elson, who only uses EVF, what is the advantage of using X-Prox over X-Tx (he stated he only uses X-Pro)?

      Maybe he likes the ergonomics on pro better. Afterall, pro is a rangefinder style camera whereas t1 has a dslr style form factor. Besides, X-T1 can also be regarded as hipster :)
