      Thanks for the kind words - I try to be honest and present cameras as I experience them. Although admittedly when I find something that's negative (like the focus issue here) I do make sure that I've understood the camera properly, and demonstrate the problem clearly for my viewers.
      As an addendum here, Fuji has released a firmware upgrade to address this issue, and I didn't experience the same issue shooting with the X-T2.

    Sir, you are an absolutely phenomenal source of information. I thought my hybrid viewfinder was defective because it’s would never display that little electronic box down in the right lower corner while focusing. It turns out that my camera was set to zone focusing instead of the single point autofocus mode. After listening to your detailed review. I switched from zone focusing back to the single point autofocus mode. Guess what, my little grey hybrid box in the right lower corner came back!
    All I could say was Wow, and Yippee!!
    Thank you so very much 😁

    Thanks. Great walkthrough. Hey, I was quickly trying out the X-Pro2 in store the other day, and I found the black levels of the EVF to be kind of washed out. Coming from an X-E1 this seemed a bit odd. Does this has anything to do with the performance modes you were mentioning? Or are the black levels washed out due to the hybrid design or something?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for watching - always nice to see familiar faces. I didn't compare EVF displays between performance levels ... there are EVF brightness and colour adjustments. I actually thought that both colour and contrast were good.

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Maarten Heilbron OK. It was just my immediate impression. The guy in the shop was eager to close the shop, so I felt a bit stressed. I will check it out in store again, on a slow morning or something. :)

    • @truecuckoo

      +Maarten Heilbron I went to the store again today, and tested out the EVF screen head to head between the X-Pro2, X-E1, X-T1. The display in The X-Pro2 indeed appears to struggle with washed out black levels and dark colours, compared to both the several years old X-E1, and the X-T1. The black levels and dark colour representation on the X-T1's EVF is just phenomenal. The old X-E1 also shows impressive dark colours and black reproduction. My guess is that the EVF display in the X-Pro2 had to be much thinner, and perhaps smaller, in order for it to work as a hybrid display, forcing Fujifilm to select a display of lower colour quality. I tried changing the EVF brightness but that affected the image as a whole. It looks more like a backlit LCD, than a modern OLED. Increasing the overall brightness thus is increasing the milky brightness of the blacks in a not that flattering fashion.
      There is the possibility that the unit was faulty, but I don't think so.

    Thanks again, Maarten (Morten in Norwegian) for another well presented and very precise review of another one of FujiFilm's great cameras. So much information at once, I have to watch this several times, stopping sometimes to check the menues in my camera, etc. etc.
    I do actually own 2 different X-Pro2's - one in stylish Graphite Edidion with matching XF23mm f/2 and the other i normal black. Love those cameras!!

    Holy smokes! This review is like a video users' manual. Should be mandatory viewing for owners as well as for potential buyers. I've had my X-Pro2 for over a year and this cleared up mysteries I've had all that time. What's more, all your reviews are like this. I watched the EX-3 review and it answered questions available nowhere else. Fujifilm should pay you a commission.

    Excellent review, the best I have watched so far for the X-Pro 2. Particularly appreciate your explanation about the OVF, including screenshot of the frame which can be seen with the 35mm lens mounted on the camera. Same is missing in all the other reviews whereas OVF is THE difference between X-Pro 2 and all other cameras on the market!

    Another Excellent review Thank you !
    that X factor in the Image quality was what leica always had over the others, I think these modern fuji's have it too
    The end result encourages you to shoot & print more , they have that solid feel and are a joy to use
    recently i bought a Samsung NX3000 , just to see if i liked Tilt screens, it was the cheapest option to test my interest ( A$299)
    but i must say i'm surprised by the image quality & pocket ability of this little toy. also exploring the excellent remote camera control a 7" tablet gives via wi-fi on these cameras , modern tech is so usable.
    Keep up the stellar job.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's my pleasure, thanks for taking the time to comment. X-factor is a good way to describe the affinity that Fuji provides and the way they inspire photographers. I didn't have the chance to review the NX3000, and now Samsung seems to have left the camera business. Thanks for the notes on it.

    Another great review! I want to get either the xpro2 or the xt2. I tested them on photokina but are not quite sure. I love the fact that the VF is on the corner so the nose does not get in the way of shooting. On the other hand, the VF of the XT2 is a bit larger. I see that you also have glasses. Do you find it dificult do see through the VF with glasses on or is it perfectly fine? Also can you compare it to the XT2 VF from personal experience?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - it's always a pleasure to read comments from a happy viewer. Of the two, overall I much prefer the X-T2 as a camera, particularly as I shoot video as well as stills.
      Although it means adjusting the diopter, I shoot both with and without my glasses - and both are good options. But yes, if that's the only consideration, I do prefer to have the viewfinder on the side (or a screen that rotates in fully). However, the X-Pro2's hybrid viewfinder is a bit clunky, and I prefer the EVF image in the X-T2.
      Hope this helps.

    thank you for your video. Yeserday I jumped in fuji world. I got a Fuji Xpro2 and now I'm studying this fantastic camera. I have a question: can I control shutter speed and aperture from rear and front dials if my lens has aperture ring (xf 16-55 2.8)? I can control S.S. selecting T on top S.S. dial but what about aperture? Thank you

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's my pleasure. Essentially, no - shutter speed is controlled by the shutter dial (although you can make small adjustments with the back dial) aperture with the lens ring.

    I've seen a lot of reviews. Yours is the best Mr. Heilbron. Very informative. You've earned my subscription. I want to buy the xpro2 over the xt2 but I have doubts because of the x-pro2 's EVF... I'm a left eye shooter and a glass wearer as well. I've read in some places that used with glasses on one might not see ALL the viewfinder image because of the eye relief not being as big as the xt2 for instance. Since you are a glass wearer yourself did you encounter that issue when shooting the xpro2?

    All that in 16 minutes?? Absolutely, the most comprehensive video review I have seen of this camera. I have owned this for over 3 months and it is a bit frustrating when I see reviews that bury the lead about what really makes this standout in a crowd. The best of both world indeed with the multitude of VF options (EVF or OVF + ERF), Dual Card, Build....and you even touched the App! Kudos!

    Great review, as always. I like the way you present a lot. TCS TV my second favourite photo channel. ☺ I will wait for mine a few years, the X-pro1 suits me just fine for now. It is a bummer that Fuji sent you the oldest lens in the lineup, the 35mm 1.4 instead of the newer 2.0... I think It would have made a considerable difference in focusing ☺

      That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes, the lens might have been a consideration, but both lenses exhibited the same performance. I had had the Fuji XPro2 now for 2 months. I have the new 35mm f2 and one of the best lenses made , the Fuji 16mm f1.4. Overall my fav camera over the Canon 6D, Olympus EM1,and the Pentax K5. Not sure how some people are not fussy over the looks as I think it looks awesome. My pictures are on par with my Canon 6D and with alot less bulk to carry around. I preferred the XPro2 over the Sony A7II and the Sony A6300. Some people are hung up over video yet 1080 P at 60fps is good enough for 99% of any camera user. Not to mention you will get no service from Sony and Fuji doesn't have overheating issues.

      Thanks, I do my best to give viewers a good sense of how the camera works - which I find is as important as the picture quality. The cameras (although I do occasionally buy one) are on loan from the manufacturers. At the moment I'm personally shooting with a Sony A6300 with the 16-70 Zeiss lens. But as I nearly always have another camera or two around, it doesn't get very much of a workout.

    • @procekim
      @procekim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** I justify it like this. Hinges are bad quality. (some Panasonics had springs inside and plastic elements) in 5 years they brake no matter if you are using them. You can easily bend sony a7s flip screen and if you drop it screen is the first thing to brake. Issue with dust. You can connect iphone with your camera. Many a7 users do anyway and we can take as many photos in any awkward position ;) Touch screen is not a good idea either. Look how bad they are on Nikon. If something, I would implement is SSD inside. I would Ditch all the connectors, Speedup entire process of saving. Maybe one USB-c inside and connect what ever you want. ;)

    Always enjoy your reviews. Probably one of the more balanced presenters, and in a world of fan-boys and corporate shills... most welcome. I've been checking out this camera (and an X-T2) for a week now and I've run up against an issue I can't seem to get around, I hate the ISO/Shutter Speed combo dial. I shoot full manual and in constantly changing environments, which means I am constantly adjusting both settings. I find the ISO dial difficult to read (especially in very bright or very dark conditions), found myself inadvertently moving both the Shutter Speed and ISO when all I wanted was to change the ISO, and found it annoying that when you change the Shutter Speed it also changes the orientation of the ISO viewing window. A really poor design especially when you factor in that the ISO wheel has a lock but the Shutter Speed dial does not. I love Fuji, but I think they went for "style over substance" rather than "form follows function" here. It might seem like a minor issue, but it's holding me back from purchasing this camera.
    Oh BTW, you can also configure the rear Command Dial to control incremental Shutter Speed. You configure it in Settings and then set the Shutter Speed dial to "T". Now if only they would update the firmware so you can set the front Command Dial to control ISO (like on the X-100F) and I just might change my mind about the X-Pro-2.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. It sounds like a picky point, but I know how aggravating it can be not to have a feature work the way you want/need. I agree, it does take a deft touch to master these interlocked rings. The only thing I can suggest is to use Auto ISO (which means you won't need to adjust it) in combination with EV adjustments.

    • @tomscott4438
      @tomscott4438 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I consider Auto ISO to be a compromise rather than an alternative. Plus I never use Exposure Comp. To me that's one step away from just putting everything on Auto and letting the camera make the decisions. On a body that begs to be shot in manual and with full immersion in the process, that seems at odds. I have the camera on loan until Wednesday. At that point I either keep it or send it back. As of today it's 75% likely it goes back. I really hope I develop some amazing dexterity and muscle memory in short order because I really want to like this camera. Unfortunately right now, I don't.

    First choice: Fuji XT30 with Fuji XF 18-55mm f/2.8 lens costing USD 1150.00.
    Second option: Fuji XPro2 with Fuji XF 18-55mm f/2.8 lens costing USD 1300.00. Feels better in hand. Is it still worth it in 2021?

      The sole advantage the X-Pro2 has is the hybrid viewfinder. I wouldn't consider it dated, but if size is a consider for you (as it is for me) maybe the X-H1 or X-T3 (or X-T4) might be other cameras worthy of consideration. I find the X-Pro2 clunky and quirky in operation compared to those two.
      All that said, the X-T30 is a terrific, if small, camera.

      Yes, it could be seen that way ... and I will say that on my final review before posting I sensed that interpretation. Maybe it's the best two out of three? Maarten, thanks. I wouldn't pursue it except for the fact the Fuji Support rep put me on hold and allegedly had a tech try it on his. She came back and told me his was the same so it wasn't a problem with mine. My response was, "no, all he proved is that its a problem for both." I got the feeling I was being told whatever necessary to end the call. Calibrating the OVF and EVF is probably a delicate adjustment at the factory and it won't be perfect, but at $1700, damn near perfect is what I expect.

    been testing the xpro2 here in Tokyo...Fujifilm HQ office lend me the camera and some lenses. I was not intrigued by the viewfinder. Frankly find it annoying and confusing. The lens is in the way of my shots. From inside info I got the xt2 will most likely not arrive until September, not July. I also found the exposure button in my way of shooting and often by accident increased it. There should have been a lock system on that. Speaking of lock. The iso dial is another annoying aspect. Anyway thanks for your amazing reviews.

      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your views, your kind words - and the news about the X-T2. I agree with your thoughts about the lock on the EV dial - or just the ability to disable it - but that's essentially what the C position does (at least then if you accidentally adjust it, you'll know, as you're off by 3 stops.) I like the ISO dial - but it is a little old school - there is a lot of 1960s rangefinder aesthetic here - and that is an acquired taste.

Of course, this camera for video would not be my first choice, I have other cameras for that purpose, but there is something about Fuji's color science! The Xpro2, by default, crushed the blacks and mids in video mode, as can be seen when you show your wave form in this video, the black level is way below zero. I've heard a rumor that this is a possible bug, but who knows. I'd love to see Fuji release more control to the video side of this camera, I see no reason not to have the Shadow tone, Highlight tone, Sharpness, Noise reduction, and Color all enabled for video. It's okay to be traditionalist, but in this day and age, ALL cameras shoot video, there no reason to feel threatened by that, by rather embrace it, and let those that want to use it have some control over it! Come on Fuji, you can do it!

      Thanks - that's an excellent viewpoint - would love to see some of your video work. And I completely agree - it's not that it's not capable, it's just that there are so many better options with more features available. The video levels/blacks is very interesting, you can see on the waveform that it's below zero. Of course that's only an issue for "broadcast", digital doesn't care. But really, it just means a wider than usual dynamic range (some cameras do way less than 100 IRE) of course, it means adjustment/grading in post, but it's a great starting point as long as you're aware of what you're getting. And sometimes, it is nice to have a "purist" camera - so there is a part of me that thinks just leave the video part out altogether.

      +Maarten Heilbron Crushed black levels are crushed no matter if you're going to broadcast or TH-cam, crushed is crushed, and needs to be addressed regardless, well, unless you like really dark images! Wider dynamic range, not so sure about that, as you need, or should be right at or near zero IRE for the black level, so the fact this shoots crushed, you're going to have to bring that up to begin with, it's bringing it into 16-235 luminance level as opposed to this being well below 0 to well above 255. Nothing above 255 is doing you any good, nothing below 0 is doing you any good, so you're gaining nothing dynamic range wise. Purist cameras, I understand, but we have those in early edition of Fuji were the video is practically un-usable, but the still image wonderful. Even Leica has joined the party with it's Leica D-LUX type 109, shooting 4K internally. For what it's worth I have a Fuji Xpro2 blog dedicated to shooting video with this camera @ Fuji-xpro2user.tumblr.com

      My point, as demonstrated on the waveform, is that they're not crushed at all - they just appear like that on a display which is designed for REC (ITU) 709, with 6-7 stops of range. Having usable signal below 0 IRE - or even below 7.5 IRE - is crushed on a REC 709 display, but as you see in the waveform, there is detail and information in that area. To be useful on a REC 709 display, that requires a LUT or some grading/levels adjustment in your video editor or colour grading software.
      You may also be confusing two different measurement systems - waveforms display IRE units (0-100), while the video signal actually ranges (due to sync pulses required for broadcast) to -20. The digitization 0-255 range doesn't exactly map - again, as the waveform shows. It's capable of a wider exposure latitude. Most cameras allow white levels to exceed 100 IRE - mostly up to 105 or 109, as does the X-Pro2 - but most leave blacks at 7.5 (0-7.5 IRE is crushed in REC 709).
      Thanks for the link to your blog, I"ll have to spend some more time reading - looks like you've done some very useful analysis.

      +Maarten Heilbron That waveform clearly shows the blacks well below zero, crushed. A waveform is a standard of measurement in IRE or you can view that in Luminance level, depending upon how your waveform is setup. There is discussion on this camera and how it crushes the blacks on other forums, you're the first that doesn't see it that way, which is all good! Case in point, shoot with the Fuji metered dead center and the footage will measure black levels well below 0 in FCPX or any other NLE. Shoot with any other DSLR and meter that dead center and the footage blacks will be right at 0. I could then lower black and mids and make that look just like what the Fuji shoots out of the gate metered dead center. The Fuji crushes the black levels upon video recording. There's even a guy selling LUTS that quote, "brings the Fuji video signal to usable standards" it's a know fact this shoots heavy, all Xpro2 footage in FCPX measures well below 0.

    if you want to focus the subject just select the single point focus because the subject wasn't moving in your video. Also 35 mm f1.4 lens is slow lens so you should go for 35 f2 version which is created for X-pro2 ...

      I did try that, it didn't work any better. I was shooting with the 50-140 in the example.

      That's good to hear. Which lens are you using? I wouldn't have included this in the video if it had not happened to me several times while shooting closeups of flowers, so I tried to replicate it in the studio as you see in the video. The auto focus seems to have trouble when the lens is near infinity and the subject is close to the lens (but focusable) and somewhat small and ill-defined like a flower.

    There seems to be a one click diopter difference between the OVF and EVF on my X-pro2 with the 35mm f2 lens (the only one I tested.) Fuji says this is normal. Really? This could be corrected in software for the EVF. They should be 100% calibrated. This is NOT a cheap camera. It's an issue or not and should not be a volume of complaint issue, but Fuji says they will not address it until they get more complaints. Check yours. If you have the same issue let's accommodate Fuji with a complaint campaign to Fuji Support. This should not be!

    Very good review, but perhaps I'm somewhat swayed by agreeing with your overall thoughts on camera functionality. The X-Pro2 is a camera I think I should love but I'm not sure I will. I did love my Contax Gs and this is as close as anything has come to it. I do wish it was full frame though - it's very expensive for an APS-C camera.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. While it would always be nice to have full frame, IMHO, APS-C is the best choice for anyone not working as a full-time professional photographer for demanding clients. And do consider the X-T2, although you may have to wait until September for availability. Here's my preview: th-cam.com/video/VtMD0ysiIao/w-d-xo.html

      I'm afraid the XT-2 doesn't really grab me. I already have several Canon DSLRs and both Sony a6000 and A72. If I could combine the FF of the A72 with the dials and layout of the X-Pro2 I'd be a very happy camper. I agree that APS-C is more than adequate for pretty much anything, my mind just works in FF as far as lens selection and depth of field are concerned. I think the X-Pro2 could also be a touch smaller - my FF A72 is smaller than the Fuji.
      Even though I have much newer gear, I still use the Canons for professional contracts - I just trust them more (I grew up in the era of Nikon F3 etc - yes, I'm old). I use the Sonys for 'fun' work but I crave the mechanical touch of a shutter speed dial and an aperture ring - sigh

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points, and although I see the advantage of FF, I'm personally not that sold - I take great photos with APS-C. Thanks for your notes, appreciated. And yes, I too am holding onto my old 50D which remains a solid performer for stills.

    yes TOUCHSCREEN (for zooming playback, browsing, menus) would have been welcomed but tilty flippy screen is a no for me. its not for this camera I for one would not want it. lets leave that on the XT1. its what differentiates each X system, a uniqueness.

    Need to send your X-Pro2 back to Fuji if you are having focus problems mate. I have no such problems with mine, including Professional rugby and Kickboxing. Where do you get the 'grain' idea from? There is only electronic noise with digital, grain doe not exist, as grain is caused on fil by the size of silver halides

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind suggestions, however it's worth noting that the firmware releases between the recording of this video and the time of your comment have addressed this issue.
      As for grain - while your arcane and historical perspective, as well as your pedantic need for language purity is commendable - the reality is that it's a term that, like many other hold overs from film, is one that's used to describe certain digital artifacts. I'm sure you understand exactly what I'm referring to.

    Thanks, Fuji will not come back with anything unless more people find the problem with their equipment and complain. I love Fuji stuff. I have a Pro2, X100T and X-E2s along with 4 lenses. I love the stuff. Just disappointed with this limited issue. I'm sure at the factory the calibration of the OVF and EVF is difficult and probably done by robots. That's no excuse however.
