17:50 old, but: the LOS in this game - with very few exceptions caused by smoke and similar - is alway repripocal. There's no such thing as being able to see a card without being seen from that card just because of being adjacent to otherwise blocking card's border. The rule is this: 1) unless smoke stuff happen, you always see into adjacent cards. 2) if there are any blocking borders on the line between you and an non-adjacent card - even if that border is adjacent to you - then there's no line of sight.
Thanks for pointing this out. As you said, Rule 5.2.1 says you can always see into adjacent cards, but to follow LOS into a second (Long Range) or third (Very Long Range) card, both the entry and exit points of the cards passed through must be white. And the reciprocal rule also applies...if they can see you, you can see them...and vice versa.
23:24 - I know it's been a year but as no one has mentioned this yet: You're supposed to use a deck from a different campaign for your staging area (start line). You'll want those four face-down cards for the game you're actually playing. :) (See rule 2.2.1 in 3rd ed, or 2.4.2 in 2nd ed rules) Thanks for this series, by the way. Love your channel!
Yeah that's a clear explanation of the game ( well the setup) Please continue with this game in youre way of doing. Because youre doing an awesome job 👍thank you sir
Might be my new favorite FoF explainer series. My previous favorite is 11 years old and low vid quality compared to now, so I'm very glad you decided to do these. Well done!
Just bought this game (version 2). This video is a great help. By the way, the number of possible maps is not actually "infinite", but it's so big as to be practically impossible of repetition. 55 cards in a 3x3 layout: about 2.3 quadrillion maps (2.3#10^15). At 1 hour per game, that's 263 billion years of play...
Note, the FO has a radio which is on the ARTY FD network only. It cannot send/recv to the company HQ radios so orders to the FO must be visual/verbal or by General Initiative.
I can’t wait to watch this. I tried to get into this game during the pandemic here in the US and I loved it. Now that time has become more in demand I haven’t had a chance to get back into it. You’ve just reignited my thirst for it. Thank you! These playthroughs are much much needed. Keep going! I can’t wait to see Korea.
Thanks for doing this, I am the guy with this on my shelf and want to learn it better. I think I even enjoy watching the videos of plays as much as playing myself. If you make more of these videos, I'll watch 'em all!!
We start our Felds of Fire series with an Overview and Setup video. It will be Mission 1 of the Normandy campaign because that's what I'm most familiar with. However, various people have suggested doing a Korea campaign which is a brilliant idea. We will do that in the near future! Thank you for watching, please Like and Subscribe if you think the video is ok :)
Can never have enough playthroughs for this game. I think at 17.51 you have LOS in column two incorrect. An enemy unit in the bocage at the top of the board could not see into the woods at the bottom. For that to happen BOTH borders on the middle bocage card would need to be white. See rulebook 5.2.1. Thanks for doing this and looking forward to the rest of the series.
Excellent video! It can serve as a quick refresher even for experienced FoF players like me… I will remember to watch it again when I start a new game after some time away from FoF. Trévières… since there are so many videos on this mission by English speakers, I dare give the following pronunciation hint, based on the one used for the address of the Harry’s Bar in Paris (“sank roo doe noo “). So: “tray-vee-air” should be more like the actual name of the town.
Great job! I like your conversational style and enthusiasm for the game. You really make it sound easy, which is definitely the way to approach it. It is my understanding that FoF at it’s core is not complicated at all, but it takes some work by the player to get there.
Great overview! I watched while eating some tuna sandwiches for dinner. My sandwiches were awesome and this video matched equally well. Really nice job explaining the overview, on to the next. :)
I'm late to the party and catching but I wholeheartedly agree with those who say you should do a playthrough. Regardless as to how many there already are, there's always something that can be gathered because of how you'll present something. You may connect something for someone just because of how you present it. The Grass Crown arrives for me tomorrow. I'm looking forward to checking that out. But I have had the Fields of FIre itch also. Too many new games I want to get to first though.
Brilliant John, please check out my Grass Crown series. An amazing game with realistic results! But especially thank you for commenting here, really appreciated!
This will be a tough mission. Row 2 is truelly a suicide row. Glad you do a playthrough because the other good ones are relatively old with a bad resolution. And this game deserves good playthroughs.
Made my day to see you here Stuka Joe, thanks for the visit! I will leave most of the setup to the viewer and get into the real play detail next with Turn 1. Thanks again for your feedback :)
Hi. Great video. But, I have had a lot of trouble with setup - I've had some trouble figuring out which units to start mission 1 with. I thought the book mentioned the Machine Guns and Bazookas, etc were available mission 4.
Thanks for watching Brian and for your support. If memory serves, thats on the scenario setup sheet? Its a missprint and catches lots of people. Just ignore it and enjoy!
@@soloboardgaming - Thanks for the help. I spent an hour trying to figure out my first action when I randomly drew "incoming artillery" as my first contact. But I am really enjoying watching the videos and learning how it all pieces together, so thanks!
@@briancherry8088 Hi Brian, just remember the main thing is to enjoy the game and plough on. The detail will come eventually. As for artillery, its not always effective. But occasionally its devastating 😂
Hi Malcolm, thanks for visiting! No, not yet bought Combat! but have followed it keenly. It's on the list but it's a huge price here in UK. It certainly ticks a lot of my boxes! :)
@@soloboardgaming Hope you manage to snag a copy because it's a really good game with fantastic replayability. I'm also looking forward to "Combat 2" which introduces a campaign system to the game and hopefully will be out early next year.
Thanks for the comments Michael👍 I can't remember using the jeep at all but I've used runners a few times and in fact, I use a runner in this play demo series 😊
I still have mixed feelings towards this game - and it's not really due to it's apparent complexity, but actually due to scope (I'm not too keen to pay for Korea and Vietnam as I'm really only interested in WW2) and card resolution (much prefer to roll my dice). Yet I keep coming back to vids with it - there's no other game like this one :)
Personally I think there's a lifetime of play in just the WW2 campaign and that's my favourite too :) But I share your love for dice, I'm happiest when I'm rolling :)

thanks so much. I took the plunge and pre-ordered the deluxe version with the re-worked user friendly spoon fed in tidy bits rules :)

@@UncleFloydWing Oops! In that case, double thanks John :)
Also as good as Chris Hobbs' series was, it was for the 1st Edition, which has some small rules differences to the 2nd Ed.
Fire lane from row 1 village to one objective card is good. Getting through Row 2 looks challenging though.
