Finally someone's called out what's always bugged me about Cocktail. Why was Veronica so hung up on cheater Gautam? Since when is hooking up with your literally only best friend's boyfriend okay? Except the exaggeration put in for comic effect, Veronica was a Queen slaying it until she bumped into these two - Generous, kind, confident and outspoken - and so gorgeous. Her character deserved better in so many ways - definitely not being demoted to a third wheeling supportive best friend to people who broke her trust.

    • @ashwindsouza606
      @ashwindsouza606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

I thought Cocktail ended with Veronica becoming a free spirit again? Even more so now, that she tried to conform and failed at getting what she wanted. I thought each of the characters made sense, and had an arc, for the most part. Saif's character finally gets over his commitment phobia. Veronica reaffirms her nature by realising that trying to commit to a long only leads to misery, and the other girl figures out that its okay to be selfish every once in a while.
There's also the interactions between the three leads. Each of them affect each others character. TRP may have a point, but in this particular movie I think it's debatable.

@@ashwindsouza606 Hm. Different perspectives, I suppose. Gautam got over his commitment phobia when he saw the "goody goody two shoes" girl who wears conservative clothes and gets along with mommy. This is a girl who's literal scammer of a husband decided to turn over a new leaf to give the relationship another chance, but Veronica's relationship could never have worked because .. well, because. The deck is totally stacked against her, as I see it.
As for Veronica, the last thing I remember was her running around trying to fix up the two - doesn't it end at that scene where they come over to reconcile with Diana's character and its happily ever after for the two lovebirds? Thats what I remember, but it's been a while so there may be some Veronica finds herself tidbit I missed.

She was worthy ! I don’t understand why you all cringe about it! So basically you want someone remain the same no matter what happen to her. One someone felt some strong emotion like love then people change good way bad way , thinks logically , illogically but people changes as new people enter into your life and become core circle of life then it bound to change. You can not remain the same. That boy changed after he fell in love and why you are not okay being girl change after she fell for him? What’s wrong in change ? She was still free spirit and took stand for herself and kicked him out of his life and house. She was dealing with emotions as much as she could.

The most cringy character in my opinion was Gautham's mother, played by *Dimple Kapadia,* who had no problem with her son having affairs with so many girls but at the end wanted a girl who was the classic *Sanskaari Bahu* material as bride for her son.

Jammy, if Tanu was awful, then Manu had his share of flaws too. He mainly fell in love with Datto because of her similarity with Tanu. Not to mention there was an age gap between them which is in fact called out in the movie. Tanu and Manu reuniting in the end was good for Datto as that would give her a chance to find someone who truly loves her and who is not on the rebound. I was happy that datto left Manu, it was not heartbreak but freedom from problems she might have faced.
Jammy said he didn't understand why Manu choose Tanu at the end but what I failed to understand when Manu fell in love with datto or why he decided to marry her, just because of their faces.
Manu was introvert not innocent in this movie, he married Tanu because he was amazed by her attitude and same goes to Tanu she aslo choose Manu knowing how he was and so in the end they choose each other.
Manu even once called Datto Tanu, imagine her life with him calling her by his ex.
Jammy also mentioned that Tanu is reason Manu was in mental hospital but aren't they both were there proving each other mental, so here Tanu won the argument so she is selfish.

She finally found two anchoring relationships only to have both of them betray her, so her heartbreak, frustration, anger, desperation, urge to fix the situation (her situation) everything is justified.
I wish instead of making Gautam and Meera as the central characters in the climax, makers had rounded off Veronica's character in the end as the protagonist. Gautam was a asshole and Meera was jerk in bechari mode, neither them nor their love story earned any respect from viewers.. Like no one cheered for them or hoped for them to be together in the end. TRP is now after TRPs. You should understand the nuances of a movie before commenting on just a scene. This movie was well ahead of its time unlike the "ordinary Indian kitchen" which was very regressive. If the meaning of being progressive is hurting the sentiment of a community, you need help, Jamie. The scene was out of place as was the sudden departure from Mohanlal Sir's character when he suddenly grabbed Manju's character.. Had a big problem with your description of cocktail.
First you praise the character of Veronica for being a "free spirit" and "not caring about other people's opinions", but then she cares so much about Gautam's opinion that she decided to change herself.
And you blame "gender stereotypes" for this.
If she's a "free spirit", then she shouldn't care what a guy thinks of her looks either isn't it?
Whether a guy or a girl, it's their ABSOLUTE CHOICE, no explanations required, when it comes to choosing their life partner.
A girl has a right to say that she wishes to marry only a guy who has served in the army, as much as a guy has a right to say he wants to marry a girl who does Pooja everyday.
Whether they eventually marry such people is a different issue altogether.
Gautam wanted a certain type of a girl as his life partner. It's his choice, as much as it was Veronica's to "not care about other people's opinions"
Sometimes people confuse "being progressive" with "being a simp"

Yes, someone said it. Cocktail was very very problematic. I still remember, I went with my Aunt and sister to watch this movie. My sister is a huge Deepika fan, am not though. Still her acting was pretty good in this particular movie. After watching the movie I clearly remember; one of the audience was saying that, ‘it was obvious; Saif would choose Daina over Deepika, because she was sanskari and well behaved and Deepika was not; it is a good message to the current generation women, they should know their boundaries, or else they will be left alone.’ I was like, seriously? But unfortunately, still many people believe this and this movie just proved their notion, that they were correct.

    • @ashwindsouza606
      @ashwindsouza606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

What happened to Veronica in Cocktail happens with so many Indian women with those characteristics all the time. The film was just true is showcasing what actually happens and even focused more on the interpersonal relationships among Gautam Meera and Veronica.
    There's no good or bad.

Jammy, I don't think you really understood the scene from Kanmadam. To begin with, the writer Lohitadas is a staunch feminist. The character of Manju Warrier is deeply in love with that of Mohanlal's but she really doesn't know what it is to be in love as she was burdened with her family's responsibilities, ever since her brother abandoned them. Think about Socrates cave men who have only seen shadows. She was ready to sacrifice her own life for the sake of her sisters. She had to put up this bold face who is afraid of nothing, to be a woman with no vulnerabilities as the society will only take advantage of it (as happened to her elder sister). Think about a wild stallion whose spirit was never broken. The "secret" is the unlocking of the journey towards love that was always there but never explored. This is when the cave man is pushed out into the sunlight. He took the first step towards it only because he knew that she was there at the frame of the door but was hesitant to make the first move or just didn't know how. This is when the woman ascends the Diotima’s ladder and ascends to the beautiful love itself. Somebody had to do it and he was ready to be the "bad man" knowing perfectly well how she would respond because he was desperate and really didn't have anyone else in his life (his own mother chose her second husband over him, which was kind of his fault) and she had none either. Lohitadas has this complex layered portrayal of his characters, that you actually have to peel it off one by one to know what really lies beneath.

I mean I end up being disheartened every single time I watch this movie.
Why Datto has to be left alone? Why she despite being so deserving is the one who has to deal with a heartbreak?
Or may be the coward Manu deserves a selfish Tanu only 😐

You got it wrong with the first one in the list, “Kitakitalu”. It is a comedy movie which does not approach the subject seriously. The movie intentionally exaggerates the scenes with fat shamming. The climax finally reveals how the husband’s character (and the audience) was wrong to judge the wife’s character for her appearance and no couple is perfect.
I hate it when the reviewers call a scene from a parody movie silly. It is designed to be silly. Can’t judge a book by reading a page, can you?!

I have to disagree with the cocktail one. It's not that she is a free spirit and doesn't care about people's opinion doesn't make her marriage material, but as the movie progresses she is shown to have numerous issues, alcoholism, she is erratic, super possessive, and gautam being her friend in the end saves her after her car accident and she deals with all that stuff.

@@gumiho6075 are we talking about the same movie? If I remember correctly, they were never "in love". They had plans to get married and stay as an open couple, so they could maintain sexual relationships outside their marriage. There was no "love". So it's pretty much the opposite of what you described because Veronica was his choice in marriage but not as a love partner.

I think that inclusion of cocktail is not required.. as in this scenario.. gowtam played by saif ali khan.. portrays a character that he didn't at all wish to marry any girl n enjoy his happening life...
But then eventually he fells in love with the purity of meera.... It's not about the Indian clothing of meera or the free spirit of Veronica...
It's just that he didn't had such ideologies while he was dating with Veronica.. n when he sees meera.. the essence of her ..the mere presence of her changed gowtam...nd he started having feelings for her... He had equal respect for Veronica too ......Sorry that's what I feel.

Manu falls in love with Datto with an idea that she is the kind of person in soul that he actually desired in Tanu .. while he actually falls in love with this IDEAL TANU which is Datto!!! So that's why when he realises that he still is in love with Tanu.. he can't make up his mind. Tanu meanwhile throws more tantrums like insulting datto.. and fed up with it.. he makes up his mind to marry Datto.. remember how he tells his decision exactly after their confrontation? But at last he realises that he can't marry her since he is in love with the idea of this 'good' Datto and refuses to marry! As the end credits roll you see that tanu and manu are fighting again over a tie worn by manu. It's a way of saying that they are fit being misfits. Datto's track is for the 3rd installment of the film and that sad ending for her made us remember and root for her more! I think it's Himanshu and Aanand Rai's finest film!

But, in my defence, that is the only time it has happened.
I love the Matlab Kuchh Bhi series because I wholeheartedly agree with Jammy, Indian cinema is, and has been, highly regressive, and that needs to be a point of discussion. That's the only way we can bring about progress.
Still, though, that guy being launched from the pool and landing on a tree was hilarious! For once, the ignorant narrow-mindedness of Indian filmmakers didn't make me seeth with anger at their idiotic viewpoints.
