To the background of AP Archive's brilliant colour footage of the 1979 South African GP, Peter Windsor talks us through a "Weekend of a Winner" - the second GP win of the great Canadian F1 star, Gilles Villeneuve. Gilles headed a Ferrari one-two that day in Kyalami, winning the race with his speed in the wet and, too, his respect for Ferrari team orders (when it was clear, mid-race, that the advantage lay with his team-mate, Jody Scheckter). Peter spent much of the weekend with Gilles, hanging out with him at the Kyalami Ranch and driving to and from the circuit with him in his locally-supplied Fiat 132. Peter is joined in the studio by the young English driver, Enaam Ahmed, who was a guest on the live show from which this segment has been edited. You can listen to Peter's audio notes from the 1979 South African GP on our new podcast platform: www.podbean.co...

It's amazing that Peter instantaneously recognizes all the cars and drivers on that grainy footage after all these years. When you listen to him, it is like he is describing the action as it is a live race.

Well Mr Peter , after watching Ford vs Ferrari , Senna , Hunt vs Lauda , Schumacher and Fernando movies , I am completely hooked on
this racing world ! Hope there will be a Gilles Villeneuve movie some day , that would be great ! I'm pressing the red danger button now here from Quebec !

Jabouille's Turn 1 outside move was amazing, that took real guts, but he also knew Scheckter was clean and would be smart. Your observations of Francois Castaing's chassis were also astute, thank you. Brilliant engineer and leader.

Happy days, I loved those years of racing, some of the mechanical solutions and ideas blew me away, all of my friends and family must have thought I was a proper nerd at the time, but I lived and breathed f1 at the time.

I have a hard time understanding why Villeneuve is so highly rated. I've been watching quite a few races from this era. He made tons of mistakes, spun out many times, huge crashes like 1980 Imola, 1981 very amateurish looking spin at Silverstone and ruined almost three drivers' races, 1981 Zandvoort another spin... and in 1979 his teammate Scheckter won the title. If he was such an unbelievable talent, why couldn't he beat him? Why couldn't he beat Pironi? I don't have enough knowledge to say but seems to me his early death played a big part of becoming such a legend.
Please don't take this as a disrespect. I just want to understand what makes him so good. To me he looked like a reckless hothead, not a top class driver like Schumacher, Hakkinen, Prost, Piquet, Senna, Alonso, etc.

A pity Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni could not use the new FW-07 until Monaco. Can you imagine how different the season would have been, when the 07 was available from the start of the season.

Gilles only knew one passion, one method: all-out attack. He fought as much with his car as with his opponents. It was even said that he fought as much against himself as with others, the others often being only spectators of his prowess. A driving style perhaps from another time but which is sorely lacking at the present.

    Beautiful days remembered.
A Rant for racings past...Drivers, power, tyres....then Paul McCartney & Wings.
It was with great sadness to realize we are all actually mortal, with the loss of Sir Stirling Moss.
It is, after watching his races again, we truly realize that, that true racing culture has been eradicated for a long, long while....and that demise will continue to be, until we demand real again.
Until we shake our collective heads...and realize that Burger king Racing, and the 20 year Oligarchy we silently endured..has all been pretend..to what really matters.
This mind set will carry until we refuse this continual.....Cardboard, Cookie Cutter, Computer. Management driving systems racing, that we have.
Where good racers are commanded in an ''ease down Laddie'' culture, where a racer is told to literally give up, and save it for the next one... copy?..enjoy your drinks, thank you for watching.
The last generation of racing has literally been squandered by...'mediocrity in engine management... by decree'.
We now have Leclerc & Verstappen....Let them race.
How many premier racers past & present in the cockpit voted for Halo...ZERO!, I believe.... with every year, more perpetual rules by non racers that continually constrict and rip your racing balls off...…
I say in closing, with respect to the ones who care....
Diagnose the most exciting 10 years in F1....and learn.
    Two/Downgrade Aero....
    Three/ Go tyre..and competition...side slip an apex?
Four/A Revived strategic component....A safer(forgive me) Nascar type refuelling system...realizing a massive strategic Chess factor,. Injecting an instant 45.2 litre quotient....We will let the Royal Academy do the particulars.
    Number One?
    No Gutz, No Glory!
Every Race, Every Car, a new Power Unit. Funded by F1.... If one blows... So what.. We actually penalize & relegate a racing team because you actually went for it?
.F1 Corps.....rewards you another power unit...one from your spares.....
A T-Car to run back to..
    F1 Corps Kitty
All teams, after screening, receive equal broadcasting, Promotion and transportation rights...similar to the premier run sports organization...The NFL, in America.
Free & open track design teams...by independent competitive national players...vying for a premier spot.... with relegations....no more Solo, Herman, ''The Butcher'' Tilke Cookie Cutter same old Strasse courses.
    D-Day...76 years....Fix...Bayonets for Runnemede.
