  • When reminiscing on the most memorable names from Formula One Grand Prix racing in the '70's one name that rarely fails to attract some degree of respect and admiration is that of Gilles Villeneuve. To many the wiry French-Canadian was all that epitomises the Great Grand Prix driver -- immensely skilful, determined, aggressive when necessary, and, most importantly to the observer, spectacular on any circuit that challenged him, especially behind the wheel of his beloved blood-red Ferraris.
    During his short lifetime Gilles exuded a particular type of magic that quickly transformed him into a motor-racing legend and this film, produced by his compatriots, pays tribute to a drive who many believed would have been one of the all-time-greats. Here you can hear from leading personalities such as Enzo Ferrari himself in a very rare personal interview, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, Patrick Tambay, Jacques Lafitte and even Canadian ex-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Their admiration for the talented young Villeneuve is interspersed with some classic action sequences spanning the '70's to the fateful day in May 1982.

    Just maybe Gilles quick starts stem from his early drag racing experience. Seems strange to have Pironi in this video.

      Gilles used to lay rubber down on the track where his starting position was. Pironi was a backs tabber.

    My sister who is kinda obsessed with Villeneuve but wasn't alive when he raced, ordered this video from a sports media shop. As she was dying to see some footage of him and get to know more about him and get to hear him speak!. But, when she gt the video she hated it as it was so old with a dated soundtrack, vintage video clips and she found it awful and scary! Haha. What did she expect! Too funny!

    Pironi had betrayed Villeneuve in Imola 82.
    Never be the same.

    @Skull4Scavenger Pironi does well to explain why he did what he did. He made a statement by winning at Imola ,I am now no longer No.2 I am good enough to be equal No.1 and good on him for doing that because it made that race at Imola incredible.

    After his accident. I think it is made end of 1982 or beginning 1983. I saw Arnoux testing a revised Ferrari 126 C.

    He did it because he was a little prick who just couldn't take the fact that Gilles was so much quicker than him. when he joined Ferrari, Pironi thought he was the fastest racing driver in the world and then to have Gilles be so much quicker than him was demoralising. If you compare the lap times between Gilles and Didier for the last laps of that race, Gilles was telling the truth when he said that he thought Pironi was show-boating and not actually racing him. Gilles was right to feet cheated

      Who had the faster time at zolder when Villeneuve hit mass??pironi!!!

    • @chrisclermont456
      @chrisclermont456 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alansmith5560 The reason why Villeneuve was driving so fast when he died, he was running out of time in the session to record a faster lap. He tires were done.

      @Firstname Lastname An interesting point you have noted about Pironi's fitness. Certainly Pironi was a fantastic driver (or he would not have won at Le Mans). Gilles was more experienced in F1 too. But what we can say for sure is that the Ferrari 126C was a death trap and it ended the career of both these brave men.

    Gilles has been a champion or a Kamikaze?
