  • The 1982 Formula One season went off to a bad start with the drivers' strike because of a form which they had to sign in order to get a super licence. This led to an unpleasant weekend of controversy.

It's even more interesting when you read Niki's book where he says everyone was having a good time at the hotel and weren't even worried but then bought a large room there and barricaded themselves in there with a piano until the issue was resolved

Ironically enough, South Africa has not had a Grand Prix since then for nearly 20 years.

When one of the conditions of licence issuance is an instruction that you must not criticise the governing body, red flags of corruption start waving.
And the idea that the governing body should control the flow of drivers between teams and in & out of the sport was absurd. F1 may not have been close to the same level commercially in 1982 compared to today, but it was still largely a commercially-driven enterprise, so for FISA to insert rules that were fundamentally in opposition to the nature,of the sport...just wrong. And the drivers won.
On another note, while I was still a kid when all this stuff went on, I seem to remember that other sports seemed to cop more flak than Formula One when it came to South Africa. Rugby and cricket tours were at the top of the news quite often. F1, not so much.

A lot of the drivers, although they went along with it, actually saw it more as Niki Lauda just wanting to be back with a bang rather than anything meaningful. They basically thought he was doing a bit of grandstanding to be back in the spotlight.

It is to Formula One's eternal shame that they didn't join the boycot.
