This is a pretty decent guide. One important thing you missed was wiping down the surfaces with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners. Getting any grease of smooth metal is really important. Also, lots of people use all in one paint/primers and thats completely fine but if you want it to last, not just look good, you need to build up the thickness of the paint, this decreases the amount of moisture and oxygen that gets through the paint film to the metal in order to start rust. You can also use a primer high in zinc if you want to increase the time untill repaint. A couple of coats of rust inhibiting paint/primer is a good basic spec, if you want a long lasting system then it would be zinc primer, two coats of micaceous iron oxide and one of of metal gloss...that should last 15 years or so. Also wire brushes are probably better on your angle grinder than sand paper.
I think u did a great job. Though I'm worried of over spray and would of used cardboard, drop clothes and a bunch to cover up the door, deck and surrounding areas.
I'm planning on carrying out an eagle project on refinishing a set of stairs that looks similar to this one. Do you have any recommendations on angle grinders that I can buy that will be cost effective as I am trying to buy multiple for other people who will be working on the project? Also do you have any recommendations on flap discs that will be compatible for the angle grinder? Thanks.
Yeah..I laughed at the paper job you did there too. Why not have just used a painter's drop cloth? So much easier and faster. Just cut to size if you have to.
My iron handrail is inside. Not as rusty but the paint is thick and chipping off in certain areas. It has white paint globs spotted throughout. And it is over carpet. After your vid, I will try a solvent to remove the paint and get the sandpaper for the rust. I hope I can find a liquid paint To use as well instead of spray paint. Also, I need a respirator. -Thx from a concerned Mom!
Did you have to sand the whole thing? It looks like you only sanded the major rust stains. Also, as others have said, did the paint hold up without a topcoat/waterproofing?
Great question. Without seeing if, it’s hard to recommend a course of action. But generally to bend metal without risk of it breaking, you need heat. Lots of heat. How bad is it?
Are saying flat disc or floppy disc as it is a flexible sandpaper type disc. I have several of these 4.5" grinder's,sanders. But they are not flexible. So I'm curious what you mean. Thanks David
@@longfeijiang2449 I decided NOT to use clear coat because hard to use. Instead, used High Gloss Black by Rustoleum and it looks beautiful. As long as you used a good primer first (two coats), then you can go directly to High Gloss Black by the Rustoleum and it really looks nice and is very protected.
after 2 years may be off topic...But wire brushes hand held or on a drill will do very little on stuborn old paint. Even paint striper is not easy job.
Yes, that is what I did. Then I used steel wool followed by sanding sponge and 150 grit sandpaper. I’m going to use combination of spray paint and can paint

Used a wire brush and rustoleum with a paint brush . Quick and lasted years
That's what I just did.
I did that 20 years ago and now it's time to do it again.
Thanks so much for this helpful video! Do you have any estimate of how long each of these steps took you?
What about a needle gun scaler?
what do you do if you have holes in rod iron fence?
If you’ve got holes in your wrought iron fence, you’d likely need to weld in some new material.

Good job Matt. Love it!

How do you sand in between those really tight curved parts?
Patience
Well done, great narratting.
Excellent, thank you.
Thanks for the post. Very helpful.
Just what I needed to see! Thanks.

use a wire brush and a rust inhibiting primer.
No primer?
Use a brush to paint as it don't waste paint like spray paint, and it's easier to breathe while painting with brush
More than one way to skin a cat boss

Flap disc is what I’m talking about
What is that? Never heard of it.
Just looked it up. Okay I have seen them. Watch your eyes!! They can come apart. Thanks for your help!
Owterol and red oxide primer
Primer?
Very nice
Also spray it with Gloss varnish , adds some sexiness and waterproofing
Your kidding I hope!🤣
I'm laughing at your little bits of paper that you're sticking together sort of thing I'd do too!! Thx for the video though!
Can I use a moderate belt sander?
I’m sure that would be fine! I don’t know how well it would do for some of the details so a lot of hand sanding may be required.
@@MattonEverything6000 ok thanks!

great video but the Dust and paint particles will also get in your eyes - eye protection
It’s a good comment and very important. I should have been wearing eye protection when doing this.

@@spyrosbellos2522 Yea I think that would be just fine!
Thank you matt, very informative video, quick question, how many cans of paint did you use in this project?
After the final black paint coat, when do you need a last coat of what they call, 'Clear Coat" ? Thanks.

Can I use a drill with a wire brush
Yea, that should work fine - it might even be better and easier to get into some of the crevices!

Great job it should be good for a year or two .😁🤫
I appreciate this video ! Awesome 👍
In the middle of it and even with paint stripper it's not plain sailing. Tight curves and sharp angles don't help! Elbow oil +++ is the solution!
We use acid on rust. Great educational video.
Can you make power washing videos?? 😮
of course!
Looking forward to it!
Thank you nicelydone

Great job but I'm paints by hand. I have artificial grass on the porch
Literally have to sand by hand with synthetic wool two houses worth of fence
noway. I'd let it rot.
Newspaper?😅
Yeahhh I know. Would definitely take a different approach if I were to do it again. Thanks for the comment!
Pressure washing first is better
