GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for your time to create the video and for sharing it with all of us! :-) The white gate looks beautiful! I am doing my garden trellises now. It works like a magic.
Concentrate on removing all signs of rust such as blistered or flaking paint before applying any rust primer. For the primer to be effective, it needs to be in direct contact with the metal surface, if not, the primer won't protect the metal. In areas that aren't rusty, but you want to overpaint, scratch the surfaces using a wire brush and wire wool to create a key for the new primer/paint to bond to. Make sure any paints you're using are compatible, otherwise they'll react with each other and blister.
WOW! THAT was thorough! GOOD job! Most thorough! A LOT of work! I HATE this project! I think they gave me wrong paint. I thought it would be "alkyd", but they gave me latex--at Kelly-Moore. And it is STREAKING!
A metal epoxy putty should do the job, you should find there are various makers selling this. We have recently used a small tube of the Evostick one and it worked well on a copper pipe repair.
There are generally two types of metal - ferrous and nonferrous. A simple test you can try on your gate is to place a magnet on it. The magnet will stick to ferrous metals such as iron and steel, but fall off nonferrous metals like aluminium and zinc. Most metal gates are manufactured from iron, if yours is bare metal and silver/grey in colour it could be galvanised steel and not aluminium. The result of the magnet test will indicate whether you need to buy metal paints for ferrous or nonferrous metals. Hope this helps.
I have a hard time with this lady's accent. What does she have in the bucket? At 0:50, she says what sounds to me like "pick a dry day and make a start by using wool flakey water to wash off any dirt and algae what would be the pressure washer." This is the first and only mention of a pressure washer in this video and I am wondering if there are some steps involving a pressure washer that are described in another video. At 1:37, she says what sounds to me like "take the rag with some wipe in it"; I have no idea what she is referring to. Her accent sounds British. Are the products she speaks of British products? If so, what would be their equivalents in the U.S. A.
Can't you not just use rustoleum spray paint? Wouldn't that go faster and give a more uniform look? I once painted a gate before using oil paint. First coat took me 4 hours.... I just told me father to add the second coat when I am gone... I couldn't do it...
True, but these areas are generally protected from water which is needed to form rust. The main damage occurs on the top surface where the water can't run off.
Thank you! I love how straightforward this video is. No beating around the bush like most TH-camrs do. ♥
Thanks for the advice beautiful. After watching your video, I will now attempt to paint my mother’s metal fence and gates. God bless.

Don't we use turpentine oil with primer and paint?
@@A0D0D7Y The Oil could be used to clean the gates before priming and also used as a thinning agent for the primer.

Buyer Beware! Not good to layer different types of paint.
I used a sponge to paint. It went on evenly and quickly.
That's a good idea! If people use a sponge, they have to be careful on how messy it can get. But, love this idea!
Great lesson for me, I love your video! wish you all the best!
Great video I found it really helpful
Thank you 😊
Yes....I needed this. .
Thank you very much!!!
Excellent tutorial.
very professional good guides thanks
thanks for the help! i will share this with everyone
How much paint is needed for a small gate about 3ft square in ml please
do you need to remove the old paint first before applying rust primer? or just the spots that are rusted
Use the ends of the wire brush bristles, not the sides as shown. The sides will just burnish the rust that you want to remove.
Nice Madam.. thats really useful information.. Thanks.
Thankyou! 🙂👌
Is it better to use spray paint? Mines a has uneven paint
So helpful. Can i just follow this procedure in painting my burglary bars i just collected from the welder?
Good painting
Excellente🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Great video
What filler material can be used for sections that have eaten away?

Great video thanks
You're welcome, thanks for the feedback.
WOW ! It is helpful ! thank you for the tutorial !
Glad to have helped.
Excellent
Nice
Great video, thanks!
is this technic the same for aluminum gate?
Essentially yes, but you'll need to use paints specifically for aluminium. Glad you liked the video.
Thanks for your reply; I really do not know how to figure out of what is our gate made:( Any suggestion how to learn that? Thank U

It always amazes me how the white people put their heart into doing everything ?
The attention for every little details...
I found this video highly amusing. Next up: "How to watch paint dry".

Even with Rust-oleum, it’s better to remove as much corrosion as possible for a better, longer lasting result.
I used a sponge to paint my gate. It toook 2 minutes
You can not paint the gate properly unless you turn upside down. Because you WILL miss the parts of the gate,
