Montauk Fluke (Flounder) Party Boat Limit and Unruly Passenger

  • Warning - some bad language in this one. This was a memorable trip in more than one way.
    I wanted to show our viewers that there is more than one way to fish Montauk, even if you don't have a boat or access to a private boat. For about $100, you can jump on one of the many party boats that target fluke on the south side of Montauk. I picked the Queen of the fleet, the Miss Montauk II Captained by Capt. Jamie.
    The fishing did not disappoint as I picked up my limit including two six + pound fluke. What I wasn't expecting was a fellow angler to lose it about 3/4 of the way into the trip.
    Apologies in advance for the blurring of his face. I did not feel right identifying him as he clearly has issues he needs to deal with.
    Kudos to Capt. Jamie and his Mates who handled the situation swiftly and with authority, sequestering the offending passenger in the Cabin for the rest of the trip and also following up afterwards to check on his mental health.
    If you ever want to experience Montauk but don't have access to a private boat to do so, I highly recommend this boat.

    John: Scary and fun trip! I think your skipper handled the situation appropriately without anyone getting hurt. You are so lucky to have such a great fluke fishery available to you. I don't know what has happened to our Flounder in the lower Chesapeake and on the seaside of the Eastern Shore but there numbers are scarce compared to the past. Keep the videos coming.

      Bigfish8 Askew thanks! We shall see how much longer this lasts. Sweeney and Rick went out today and were shut out. Now granted Skinner and I weren’t on but it did sound like the bite was completely dead today. Haven’t seen many favorable reports this week. Hope it’s just a fluky (pun intended) thing...

Was planning a trip to get out there Monday, seeing low winds on my app but still 3 footers. I can’t complain too much I guess because it’s been a pretty good fluke season

    I was getting creep out just watching the part where the guy was next to you and you just know something was very wrong with him, but you kept your cool 🤙 and you were very aware of what’s going on around you. I thought the Capt and crew handled it just fine, I’m glad it didn’t escalate into something worst.

    Man I'm only 31 years old I'd been party boat fishing 20+ years and never delt with a situation like that. So glad the issue was resolved without anyone getting hurt. I love the party boat videos and hope this incident doesn't discourage further vids, but understand why people don't deal with party boats just for reasons like this. Most don't for even lesser reason but as much as I love party boat fishing the truth is private charters, fishing on a friend's boat , or have having your own are the most comfortable and enjoyable situations.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dseafishing x3 I really thought the Captain did a great job handling the situation. The truth is when you open your boat up to 50 plus strangers once in a blue moon you will get someone who proves to be a problem.

    • @dseafishingx3
      @dseafishingx3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jiggingjerks I agree the captain did what a great capt is supposed to do and handled it will. Thank God it never escalated any further than that. I'd fished my favorite boat The Voyager with Captain Jeff Gutman for years most fishermen on the same page especially of booked overnight trips but open book can be a different ball game but most still chilled just mostly dealing with novice with the few regular vets. I guess the pool opportunities draw good fishermen to party boats the most especially the regulars but I can't blame them lol!!!

      @dseafishingx3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Robert McCandless I'd never been night time bluefish and striper fishing but I can only imagine lol. I've caught plenty of bluefish not even seeking them that I'd never had a reason to go for them. Maybe if I go for stripers but definitely not just blues, I catch more than enough of them on offshore sea bass trips lol. Bluefish stay suspended above those offshore wrecks!!!

    John- is your pompano bay a custom build? If so, do you recall about how much it was to ship it to you? Or did you pick it up? I would never have turned my back on that dude once he broke the bottle and had a shank.

    • @jiggingjerks

      Nomad damoN custom. I think shipping was 20 or 25 - they are in NC and I’m NY so pick up was not an option.

    • @nomaddamon670
      @nomaddamon670 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've contacted them several times about a custom build. One of the first things he informs me of is the shipping cost. It is approx $200 to ship to me (maybe more..). I'm in RI. I don't understand it. I'll try again with them. Maybe things have changed. Thanks for the response John!

      Long Island Fishing Capt wasn’t sure. Honestly, no one did anything to him as far as I could tell. Mates were perplexed! I don’t want to speculate as to mental health but my presumption is that may have played a factor...

    Wow scary stuff, thanks for sharing John. Question for you, do you feel you may learn of new honey holes while on a party boat, or do you feel your own chartplotter marks are more productive in the Montauk area?

    • @26halkman
      @26halkman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Leon. We are pretty committed to our marks. Honestly, the day was pretty hazy and foggy so I didn’t even know exactly where we were fishing.

    • @CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore
      @CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John, while I much prefer being on my own boat, I will periodically take a party boat to get a sense of where they are headed to target certain species. I use the Navionics app on my phone to track the party boat. I mark the spots where the bite is hot and then transfer those coordinates into my Lowrance on my boat. If you came upon some bottom paved with Fluke aboard the Miss Montauk, you would want to know where you were, just a thought :).

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      melo Ramirez I actually pretty much stopped using the slow pitch but it does work. You move the jig in short and slow 6 to 12 inch bursts. Key word is slow as fast jigging does nothing since the tip of the rod is so noodly....

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep on Fishing it’s a party boat - it’s open to all fares. They don’t give a mental competency test before you board. Captain told me afterwards in all the years he’s doing this, this had NEVER happened before

    • @ERICKOLET
      @ERICKOLET 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boat captain still has right to deny passage. This guy had to show signs before boarding , and for safety of all, should have been questioned.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep on Fishing 50 - it’s not quite that easy. People often board party boats before the crew shows up. His behavior became evident only hours into the trip and miles from the dock.

    Too many illegals in Montauk, I would have called the Coast Guard , you don't pay a head boat to put your life at risk, you take enough of a risk as it is.
    I was on the gail Frances when it caught fire back in 01, did I expect that, no, but if you spend enough time on the water odds are against you.
    I had only 1 trip where a passenger was out of hand, of course he was drinking, and on that day he picked the wrong guys to mess with , Myself and my 2 sons, we are all over 6' and my younger son played professional football was pumping iron like his father did back in the day, it was over before it started.
    You can't pacify people who are out to cause problems, take em out of the picture and carry on.
