Slow Pitch vs. Fast Action Rods - Montauk Fluke Fishing with the Queen of Fluke

  • We were privileged to be fishing with our good friend Tony Hong (of Tony Hong Fishing), Joe Sumo Cho and Joe's girlfriend, Hailey Kim, aka the Queen of Fluke.
    Multiple 5 pound plus fish were caught on both fast action and slow pitch rods. Which to you prefer? Links to both styles are below (Tsunami Classic H is a fast action and the Tsunami Slimwave is a Slow Pitch).
    Joe got pool honors with an 8.5 Montauk monster. I was close behind with a 7.5. Hailey had two really big fish with her biggest at 6.5 pounds.
    There's a reason Montauk is known as the Mecca of fishing.

Nice video John. Meanwhile out here in Jersey off the surf 4 shorts with one borderline keeper using a pen spinfisher 3500 and penn battalion 7ft medium heavy spinning rod. Very informative video. You guys are great fluke fishermen. I'm still struggling this summer with fluke. I can out-fish almost anybody for big blackfish, but fluke haven't been friendly to me lately. Only one keeper my last trip out. I think I just need to find better spots, because I believe my technique is correct.

      Engineer - we are great fisherman cause the fish are there lol - we would be nothing if we were fishing a barren area. Chin up sir - tog season will be here before you know it (and by the way, we love togging - will have a ton of videos up in the Fall)

      Jigging Jerks you guys work hard to find the fish, and you're damn good at it. I spent $100 in gas last weekend trying to find some fluke all over the ocean, bouncing from wreck to wreck, and I ended up with one keeper fluke and a ton of sea bass lol. I comment on almost all of your videos, and one of these days I'd like to give you a good report for once! I look forward to your tog videos! Love this channel.

    • @jiggingjerks

      Michael Peterson - it’s an incredibly strong reel. If only it had a flip switch :)

    • @MichaelP0418
      @MichaelP0418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jiggingjerks that's a nice light reel. Think the only discouragement I have on it though is the line capacity. My goal was to hook it up onto a Penn Warfare rod for blackfish, striper, or bluefish with either 25 or 30lb line

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Peterson more than enough line for that I think! Call Mike Kim at Tackle World and he can give you reel life specs on it - it’s a powerful, smooth little reel

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video which action do you prefer for fluke? And why do you call the slimwave a noodle rod?

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer fast pitch. I’m convinced it catches more fluke but I also think the really big girls are lazy and will hit a slow pitch presentation more readily than a fast jig. We call it the noodle rod because it has so much give in the upper third of the rod, like a wet noodle. Thanks for watching!

      Are you using bait or gulp? Look for a couple of Montauk trips from this week to be published soon (one today).

    Can I use a st croix inshore MH power fast action for fishing 1/2 - 1 ounce bucktails for flounder/fluke

    Sucks about Doc's rod. Looks like the butt end was elevated off the deck on the back side of the helm station/seat. Might be covered under warranty. I'm a fan of your videos and team members/friends and please take this constructively, the bickering takes away from enjoying the video and from watching the fishing. You sound like me and my best buddy, who also happens to be named John. We bicker like sibblings and it can wear on the patience of others. How about teaching Haley to net a fish? She's obviously got game and skills with the rod and reel; teach her the whole game! Ok, enough criticism outa my pie hole. Please keep the videos coming. I look forward to them daily! On the days I can't get out on my boat in Cape May or my skiff in Avalon, your videos really fill the void and it's like I'm right there with you all. Bravo on another killer day on the water!

      B Stav - hey John - first off great name and thank you for the honest constructive criticism - and I mean that - it was well meant and intelligently written :)
      However, we don’t want to be “fake” - this is how we are on the boat and the day we start acting nice to each other will signal the day we jumped the shark (Happy Days reference) :)
      Now, having said that, perhaps I can edit some of that out so you guys don’t have to be subjected to what Skinner sees each time he fished with us :)

      Jigging Jerks you’re a class act!! I now find myself asking, “What would Skinner do?” when I’m fishing!! Hahaaa!!

      Angry Patriot so we mostly use fast action rods - this trip was definitely the exception to the rule...

      ROK2369 I didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it was reckless and I’ve stopped doing that. But all that broke was his line.

    That slimwave cant be all that bad if you caught a 27” 7lb plus fish

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      McLovin6912 it’s a fine rod but not conducive to fast, Skinner style jigging. If you go slow and long on the jig, it works great!

    • @6912wfd
      @6912wfd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jigging Jerks gotcha

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      McLovin6912 yeah, I don’t always do a good job explaining this but if you are looking to a rapid vertical jig, the soft tip on these rods does nothing to the bucktail, it actually absorbs all the action. If you do long swooping jigging motions, you’re fine

      Tom Kelsh so we actually broke the Doc one down after I published this vid. He actually broke the rod, not me. And with Joe’s, it was just his line but that was a dick move on my part for sure :)

    Please give a correct action to slow pitch rods. You are not using it right.
    Using correct slow pitch jigs, not bucktail... --- JW-SBC100 with Daiwa Saltiga SK Slow Pitch Jigs SA-SK60G05 and SA-SK85G05.
    And, use mechanical break more often if you decide to use slow pitch jigs.
    I saw John Skinner tried slow pitch action but he failed so bad.... Probably, he didn't use mechanical break much.
    Hope to see you guys at Long Island Sound! Tight lines!

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. Admittedly we are not slow pitch experts - what do you mean by "mechanical break?"

    • @mylovebugcat
      @mylovebugcat 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mechanical brake, sorry typed wrong.
      I meant "tension spool knob"
      You need to adjust it more often.
      Finding the correct fall speed is key to slow pitch jigging.
      You need to jig like you are dying fish...
      Good luck!

      @coolvid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mylovebugcat ... I totally understand your way of thinking in regards to the world of true jigging, fast or slow, but we are not going for yellow tail and such, we’re fluking, practically bottom bouncing. Slow pitch rods are being used but have to understand it’s fluke. Just giving a slow presentation that’s all.
      Offshore guys are probably wincing since “slow pitch” used here is way different than what they know is true.
