If the police aren't there protecting the scene its standard practice throughout most of the world to pull up behind in a 'fend off' position to use the appliance to protect the firefighters. One man runs back and places warning signs a set distance back. The next appliance usually pulls up beyond the incident by a hose length. Police will then usually pull up and protect the first appliance by coning off the adjacent lane for safety. We in the UK are lucky as it a national ruling to which all the emergency services agree. The police priority is safety, not traffic and if necessary they will and do close the motorway completely. The police and ourselves have lost colleagues to rubberneckers so we all agree, our safety and those involved take first priority.
I mean for the most part they had traffic going slow and mostly out of the middle lane leaving two lanes clear in that spot for them, shutting down that whole part would have caused issues elsewhere including other emergency response
@@gone.golfing : when rubberneckers pass by they look at the fire and lights, not at the FF’s. Just think when you’re on the phone and you miss your exit. You can clearly see the exit but your mind doesn’t acknowledge it because the brain can’t multitask. That’s how cops and FF’s get insured or die on highway calls. Never count on (un)common sense of drivers.
I can't believe that the traffic was allowed to continue flowing just as if nothing had happened. The road should have been closed as it would be in the UK. Total madness!
It's not a UK/ America debate. Where I am, they teach us to use the truck as a blocker and angle it so it something hits it bounces into traffic, not into the work area. That's my only complaint. However, as an assistant chief myself, I won't Monday morning quarterback a call I didn't run.
@@Theupstateidiots @ I need to agree to a certain point. While the engine should be used as a barrier, the highway patrol should have used a rolling roadblock maneuver and shut down traffic.
As far as I know most of the department is volunteer except the higher ups and they are paid very well. My friend started off as a volunteer and he is now a chief and he has his own truck and appears to be doing well. I almost joined because of him, but didn't, kinda regret that. The fire department in East Brunswick is broken into 3 branches. 1, 2 and 3. 2 Takes care of the Turnpike.
For all those here, zamboni243’s explanation is spot on. For 25 yrs(10 of which were 1st due on the TRNPK) I’ve expressed all your concerns, griefs and policies. BUT what y’all don’t remember is that this is New Jersey! It’s fucked up! Period.
Why the hell did the driver bury that engine in the cloud of smoke like that? Why not pull ahead of the scene if he knew what direction that smoke was traveling to make attacking it a little easier and more visable?
Beacause the safty of the firefighters is more important than visability. In case a car misses all the blinking lights and warnings, it only crashes in the truck, not the complete scene with the persons. But for that, the truck shoud have been parked a bit more in the middle of the street.
I would understand keeping an engine behind the fire if they would have used it to protect the crew, but they didn't. So they park in the direct line of the smoke (not very healthy) and do not care of blocking the lane next to the car fire to keep their people safe....
Jersey is wild. I'm from the midwest, I can't even fathom cars passing by that close to an active scene, and right next to responders. Cars passing within six inches of a charged hose? Unreal. Stupid, and dangerous.
At the very least the 1st in engine company should've taken up a blocking position to protect the firefighters! That department I would say have no sense of what it takes to make a safe scene to operate in.
they do this 3-4 times a week. Pretty sure they have a great sense of what they are doing. State troopers is where you issues lie, they dictate what gets closed
@@bigdoorcontrolguy2232 They may have a good idea how to put the fire out but I have no idea about Firefighter Safety! Screw the State Troopers! I need to watch out for themselves and if that means shutting down another lane so be it! Either that or let the state troopers put the fire out because they certainly need to be operating much safer than they are and if video. Doing it multiple times safely is not an excuse, an accident can happen any time!
In the UK there would be 2 fire engines sent and these would place themselves in fend off position over 2 running lanes just before the car fire, so Ffs would get out of the left side and have a bigger protected working area. The second appliance would pump their 1800l of water into the first, if necessary. I don't see too much wrong with the clip apart from the hose pressure given to the Ff at the end was a little high and he could have used his V spray better to economise water use more effectively. In the UK the fire service can`t officially close lanes but the Police are OK about letting the fire service get on with it but the Police can pull rank if they want to but not to the extent that is described in NJ. Seems like they don't have a very good working relationship, which is a shame but if you have ever worked in the Fire Service (same in the UK) there was always a bit of needle between the two departments. Seemed that all coppers wanted to be ffs but no ffs wanted to be coppers!
At first, I tought that it was a kind of a ceremony: You put a truck in fire, in the middle of the road, and then, make as if nothing happens. Those who pass near the fire being «purificated» in some way.
I was about to comment on the fact that it is scary to see the FD not have traffic protection authority like we do here in Ontario, Canada. I have not seen a traffic incident here where the FD were on the side of the road, even on smaller roadways. Here, the threat of arresting a FD member for blocking traffic regardless of the amount of traffic, does not exist. In intersections even, they park anyway they want, and on a few occasions, the way way the do in the middle of an intersection for a traffic accident, does not always make sense, but the job gets done. Compared to this video, Ive seen vehicle fires, where they block all lanes in the same direction, and a few in the opposing lane, for everyones protection. The opposing lanes are blocked primarily for avoidance of any accident between vehicles themselves should the smoke cause obscure vision passing through. The white truck passing in this video so fast while the firefighter was there, is shocking.
100% agree. But then like me, you live in a civilised country. I’m in Australia. The police would have that road closed in a jiffy in case anything exploded or the smoke caused another accident. Then the fire brigade would be given free rein. The same in Britain. They seem awfully cavalier here in this video.
@@tansithebest Agree. Lane was shut down way the hell back and no cones were leading up. People easily got back into the lane. One white truck was 2 feet from him.
I visited jersey about 4 years ago and was shocked that when emergency vehicles were screaming down the road no vehicles would pull over to the side to let them pass. Is that just a michigan thing?
In Toronto, Canada the traffic would have been jammed just to see a vehicle on the side of the road with flat tire. I'm impressed how traffic continued to flow. I thought when the smoke covered the firetruck the fireman were in danger of being hit, especially the one who was in control of the hose.

The police and ourselves have lost colleagues to rubberneckers so we all agree, our safety and those involved take first priority.
Amazing how fast the fire is out when one man pours some water (or was it foam?) on it. Thanks for the great drone visuals.
Great video. Only one I've seen in birds eye view.
Absolutely disgusting that we favor keeping lanes/highway open instead of minimizing risk to first responder's life.
Agree, here in NM they will close a road just for sneezing (not even a joke, some roads have been closed since the pandemic started).
What are you talking about? How were the firefighters lives at risk at any point?
I mean for the most part they had traffic going slow and mostly out of the middle lane leaving two lanes clear in that spot for them, shutting down that whole part would have caused issues elsewhere including other emergency response
@@gone.golfing : when rubberneckers pass by they look at the fire and lights, not at the FF’s. Just think when you’re on the phone and you miss your exit. You can clearly see the exit but your mind doesn’t acknowledge it because the brain can’t multitask. That’s how cops and FF’s get insured or die on highway calls. Never count on (un)common sense of drivers.
@@gone.golfingwhat.. you serious ? You watch the same clip
Also the jersey turnpike is a madhouse. Only driven it once, and I could go without again.
Welcome, to the jersey turnpike
@@Theupstateidiots @ I need to agree to a certain point. While the engine should be used as a barrier, the highway patrol should have used a rolling roadblock maneuver and shut down traffic.
@@mr.wilson8340 that would be nice. Where I am in upstate New York we dont always have that luxury.
Look how close the cars are passing by!! Where is the road closure?
Excellent video, especially the Drone footage. Glad to see traffic stayed clear if the truck.
Is East Brunswick Fire a paid Department?
Period.
Great Footage, Like The Drone Angles. Good Job 👍
Boy that sumbich burnt real good. What was it...full of tires?
Why the hell did the driver bury that engine in the cloud of smoke like that? Why not pull ahead of the scene if he knew what direction that smoke was traveling to make attacking it a little easier and more visable?
Beacause the safty of the firefighters is more important than visability. In case a car misses all the blinking lights and warnings, it only crashes in the truck, not the complete scene with the persons. But for that, the truck shoud have been parked a bit more in the middle of the street.
I would understand keeping an engine behind the fire if they would have used it to protect the crew, but they didn't. So they park in the direct line of the smoke (not very healthy) and do not care of blocking the lane next to the car fire to keep their people safe....
easier to justify a disability retirement
In NJ the state police won’t allow it
Jersey is wild. I'm from the midwest, I can't even fathom cars passing by that close to an active scene, and right next to responders. Cars passing within six inches of a charged hose? Unreal. Stupid, and dangerous.
It's what happens when you live in the most densely populated state in America
Those are some crazy long lane markings compared to what we have down south
Saw the plow on the front. How much you wanna bet faulty wiring?
Looks like he's not doing any snow plowing this year!
Thats not funny plough suicide rates are up this year hard times pushing them to do crazy things like this. 🇬🇧👍
Nice work with the drone footage!
What drone do you have
At the very least the 1st in engine company should've taken up a blocking position to protect the firefighters!
@@Msradell you must not be from the state lol good luck with that, I can promise they will remove you from the scene lol
@@Mr_Tecumseh im glad you think you can tell a trooper what youre going to do on their road lmfao
@@Mr_Tecumseh Its 100% their road lmfao. ask anyone on that dept if you dont believe me.
Park your trucks to cut off the lanes you're working in?
How the hell do you get to all these fires all over NJ!!
Only one fire marshall was at the scene?
Just as a matter of interest, just how many crew members were on that first appliance. I only see two! How can that be?
Whats with the snowplough ??.
Amen to that your comment is spot on.
Looks like 803 that district 2's 2018 Pierce Enforcer and that second truck is Squad 806 2004 seagrave
Like most people in this Country, you don't pay attention in what you see, That LANE Was SHUT DOWN, Use your Eyes!!!
It was shut down a few hundred feet behind. People went right around it. Idc, the apparatus should cross the lane you're working in.
@@tansithebest Agree. Lane was shut down way the hell back and no cones were leading up. People easily got back into the lane. One white truck was 2 feet from him.
Loved the drone shots! What drone do you use?
I visited jersey about 4 years ago and was shocked that when emergency vehicles were screaming down the road no vehicles would pull over to the side to let them pass. Is that just a michigan thing?
I like the way the traffic keeps moving.nobody stops to see if anyone needs some medical assistance.
Is the snowplow alright???
great footage
Very nice video! Well done!
Great video. PROBLEM...FIRE APPORATUS SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE NUMBER 1 LANE TO PROTECT THE FIREFIGHTER FROM TRAFFIC.
You flying on a Part 107?
very odd to see the help truck and pd after the car fire instead of shielding traffic
First in engine just a two man? Nice work.
Which drone was used in this video? Please share info. Thanks
Do they not use foam in NJ?
Wow these flame paint jobs are looking more real by the year.
In Toronto, Canada the traffic would have been jammed just to see a vehicle on the side of the road with flat tire. I'm impressed how traffic continued to flow.
I thought when the smoke covered the firetruck the fireman were in danger of being hit, especially the one who was in control of the hose.
Amazing Drones !!
Nice Catch.. Hey, I need to get in contact with you somehow regarding the Hurricane Ida pics and vids you had when you followed us around for that water rescue. (Rocky Hill)
I understand what you're saying and it's BS. Screw the njtp. The car fire is in one lane and the hose line and the ff is in the other. That's two lanes. Block them both. But thanks for the explanation of how screwed up NJ is.
. . . what a - wow! - really remarkable high quality recording - which equipment is used ?
iPhone and DJI drone
Did they send a fire truck from California?!
Where is the driver/occupants??
Did the driver get out safely?
Firefighters who are parking against the wind behind the burning car in the smoke and heat... instead of parking in front... veeery intelligent ;-) ;-)
Strangely ironic that the burning truck has a snowplow on it.
It got depressed because there was no snow. 🇬🇧👍
What a bad way too position the fire truck.
I want to know why the engine is not on an angle blocking the fast lane so this poor bastard doesn't get hit by a car. Sop has to be a volunteer company
Especially so when the second engine pulled up! Block with the rig, Give traffic the right shoulder. A mans life is worth a little inconvenience!
I know state troopers get pissed off when you block one of their Lanes they're very arrogant about their Highway whether it's the Garden State Parkway or the turnpike. I was on the job 25 years in Irvington New Jersey. I used to block sometimes two lanes if they didn't like it that's too bad I'm not getting one of my guys killed to keep traffic moving.
Great footage
If that happened on the Garden State Parkway traffic would back up for five miles on both sides of the highway, everybody has to look.
What drone had been used?
Wow no one came to help I feel sad I would help if I was on the road I am so sorry for those people we love you
God bless America ❤
SO HOW ABOUT THE DRIVER?
Nobody stops to help?
my question is that instead of recording this by any chance to you find out I'd the person or person's. we're ok??????
Everyone out yes police were on scene before I drove by.
WOW!!!!!!! A fully engolf snow plow truck fire😮😮😮😮😮
Why did it take so long for response
Omg no one blocked the lanes? The police should have done that!
nah the trooper was way back sitting in his car for his own safety
Drone footage is great….but isn’t it highly illegal to fly over ,especially hovering over a major hiway?just wondering is all…
Yes you can't fly over traffic.
