I caught my own shrimp to fill my freezer

  • After an incredibly successful fishing trip for speckled trout near Grand Isle, Marsh Man Masson connected with Capt. Daryl Carpenter, who has been pulling a trawl every day, directly behind his camp on Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island.
    Trawling for shrimp used to be a huge recreational activity in South Louisiana, but outdoorsmen and women have gotten away from it, probably because the tasty crustaceans are so readily available in supermarkets. But it's a lot of fun, and in years like this, it's ultra-productive.
    Carpenter said his hauls have been large, and so have the shrimp, with an average size of about 60 to the pound. That's excellent for brown shrimp.
    The season will run another few weeks before it's closed by the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The closure is designed to protect juvenile white shrimp, which will begin making their big move into the lower estuaries sometime in the summer.
    When that happens, Carpenter will hang up his net, but not for long. The white shrimp season will open in July or August.
    Like the video? Please give it a thumbs-up, and be sure to subscribe to Marsh Man Masson on TH-cam. Also, leave a comment below. Have you ever pulled a trawl? Do you still do it? If not, why not?

    Back in the late '50s and early '60s when I was in my early teens ... I was always with my Uncle Joe at Hebert's Landing on Calcasieu Lake with what seemed like a thousand other shrimpers on opening day. I do agree for some reason people just don't want to do all the work because it was work. But there is nothing like fresh shrimp.

    Lizard fish, sometimes called Cigar minowes, have a strange smell, unlike any other fish. Porpoises absolutely LOVE them. I used to save them in a bucket, and before I dumped them over, I would knock on the deck with a wooden shrimp rake. In a few days, porpoise learned the signal. After that, no matter how hard I tried, I could NOT get rid of them . They would fight over the gilled bycatch, and bite holes in my net.. They are super smart and unbelievably fast. I had a 25 foot wooden Lafitte skiff with a V-8 Oldsmobile, and they would go as fast as I could. According to physics, this is impossible, but they do it anyway.

    I did this same thing in Texas many years ago. I'd definately build a portable culling box that you could take in or out as required. What you don't need, you could just slide it out the end of the box and back into the water without sliming up the deck of your boat. Good video.

    • @grandislefishingreport6689
      @grandislefishingreport6689 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got a portable picking box that fits in the seat bracket. If you notice my fishing rods are still on the boat, I had just gotten back from a fishing trip and was in a hurry to get this done so I forgot to put it in the boat. The beautiful thing about the Blazer Bay is that it is a flow through hull with large scuppers so on those days that I do not have the picking box, everything I don't want washes out the back. And when I get back the pressure washer is waiting on me. We just do whatever it takes to fit it all in a day but I second the picking box.

      Marsh Man Masson It's a lot less work to shrimp with a cast net, but it yields less shrimp per catch so it takes longer to get the same amount. So it would take about 2 hours to get what you can get in 10 min trawling.

      I"m not sure on price. Like all things, I'm sure you get what you pay for. I bought a 12-foot trawl second hand years ago, and paid $75. There is no device needed to elevate the net. Just tie it to the rear cleats.
