I am indifferent to Gene. I like some KISS songs and have seen him interviewed many times simply cause I am a huge rock/metal fan. I think this is the most patient, eloquent and even tempered behavior I have ever seen from him. I would even say he behaved admirably here because he did not overtalk the papparazi guys, he had a dialogue with them . And he chastised them in a gentle way so as not to ruin the mood for the genuine fans who wanted autographs/pics. He kept a cool head but made his points effectively. Bravo Gene!

I agree, as a fellow 80's metal head, I was never a huge Kiss fan. A couple songs I did enjoy. But a FAN, no I wasn't. But I have to give it to Gene in this video. His logic is sound, and he made a very well made point. Logic dictates I can not fault Gene as a BIG of prick as some credit him as. At this level of fame people and the masses become Walkers. The band performs for millions of fans around the globe, it's easy to forget that they were once just a bunch of guys in a band playing in a club for 3 people: Paul and Gene are two of the greatest salesman in rock n' roll.
But he earned it. You don't work for free if your good at something.
Gene has freely admitted he didn't set out to establish a rock n roll band, he set out to establish a rock n roll brand.
I can't tell if Gene is pissed about autograph seekers, video cameras, powerful and attractive men, or professionally dressed people.
Here, he was pissed about being put down about not making time for a fan, by someone whose whole reason for being there was to get a rise out of him.
My sense of it was that some of those people hung around that radio station frequently when celebrities were going to be dropping in. Either trying to get multiple items signed that they could flip on eBay, or provoking some kind of response on camera that they could sell to TMZ or whomever. He chatted with them for ten minutes and it looked like he signed one item for everybody, so I don't know what complaint they could really have. Most celebrities would have just made a beeline to the car.
I love how Gene reverses their negativity back at them.
Problem is, is if you're going to be the type of star that picks and chooses who gets an autograph, based on if they seem like a vulture or not, you're going to disappoint a genuine fan. Easiest fix is to ask who to make it out to, that should weed out the vultures pretty quick, but by Gene saying the fans have to fix it amongst themselves is silly, what are they supposed to do, lynch the vultures in the street? I have sought a lot of autographs from musicians I admired in the past, but I wouldn't go out of my way to ask for his, he just doesn't seem like a nice person.
When a fan comes up with a stack of 10 albums to get signed...they're a professional.
I've been touring for 30+ years...you see the same clowns in every-city...every show.
I think anyone could see that being a vulture and not a true fan. But the real fans shouldn't have to suffer for the ones who want to make money from the stars.

The problem with that approach is it takes that much longer to sign things. Then you get into someone saying their name is Koi Koi. Is that Koi Koi with a C or a K? Too much aggravation which is why many stars refuse to do any personalized autographs when there is a crowd.
I have heard and read people say "Gene is a narcissist!" Or "Gene doesn't really care about the fans!" I was one of them! I say, whole-heartedly, that with the last few videos I have seen of Gene "out of his comfort zone", he has handled himself like a professional and as much as a gentleman as the situation provides. Yes, I thought he was a total asshole and would rather stab you than sign your silly little photo! I have seen a side of Gene that has opened my eyes that he can be quite articulate and personal to the fans and guys begging for his time when he has already been paid to be somewhere else. This is, in fact, one of those times. Sure, there are times when he is rude and thoughtless but not here! He took the time to explain, over the rudely interrupting "reporter" (He may claim to be a fan but fan's don't have other people with them holding 4 thousand dollar cameras!" When the guy he pointed out as a "professional" rolled up his sleeve to unveil Gene Simmons ink on his flesh, Gene quickly and apologetically made him feel comfortable. Now, you tube is no forum to admit my new found respect of this 65 year old rocker but I have tried to meet other "heroes" of mine and they wouldn't even look at me or snub me by looking the other way! Trust me, I am under no allusions that Simmons has totally reformed but I am seeing a "softer, gentler" side to the demon! He has realized Time AND fame are fleeting! Gene Simmons turn me down for an autograph once and what made it even more Awkward was the fact that we were trapped together alone in an elevator, all the way the top floor at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas. So Gene had to stand there with this shity condescending look on his face with the guy he just turned down for an autograph for about 90 seconds... But then later on I asked him when he was down in the lobby and for some reason he didn't hesitate he just started signing for us. I know he recognized me in the lobby cuz he gave me this little grin... Hey that's a schmuck I got trapped in the elevator with he was trying to get me to sign an action figure.

Whether it's Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, SLASH, KISS, Dave Grohl etc. there are genuine fans whom want the autograph, and then there is the herd of people who only want to make a profit. Gene is aware of this so called "business" and that is why he is reluctant to sign an autograph these days.
