I agree that the translator is doing a great job. But also, I want to point out that the 'good translation' owes a lot to the 'clarity' of Bong's answers to the questions. Bong's answers are never long, never opaque. He answers concisely, entertainingly, and precisely.
Room 634 Completely agreed. Bong is very clear and on point in his speech. And that’s not too common... I used to work as a Korean-English translator.. Most people ramble on too long and lose their space in their own thoughts...
This translator is eloquent, quick, and knowledgeable about films. But she misses a few things. Like when Bong Joon Ho tutored for a rich family and saw that they had a private sauna, he said he vividly remembers having "mixed" feelings at seeing such extravagant luxury. But the translator translates it as "eerie" feelings, which incorrectly sounds like he felt the house was haunted or something. Also, Bong Joon Ho says he lets ideas "ferment" like whisky, but the translator translated it as "percolate" like whisky, which doesn't have the same nuance. And Bong Joon Ho said that Song Kang Ho was an "inspired" actor, which means the actor displayed creative genius, but the translator said "inspirational" actor, which means the actor motivates others. And "han" was translated as desperate, which isn't quite correct, but that's hard to translate concisely. Little things like that. But she's a top-notch translator.
I am so amazed by the level of accuracy of the interpretation. She is the best I’ve seen! This also says how amazingly meticulous the master Bong is to pick the perfect translator not only for these interviews but also to work closely with Darcy Parquet for English subtitle of his films.
you're right. korean is my first language and I'm genuinely shocked how Darcy's translation reflects nuances of very unique linguistic approaches that Korean only has. one time I saw Darcy as an interviewee and turns out his korean is more than excellent but it was better than average koreans.

맞음. 그냥 흘러가는 단어로 말한것 까지 하나도 안빼고 적절하게 다 통역하고 있음. 봉준호가 필름 아카데미 다닌 애기 하면서 정부에서 지원하는 이란 애길 했는데 그것도 안뺴고 다 자연스럽게 통역함 .내가 본 채고의 통역임. 게다가 귀여우심. 제일 빡쳤던 통역은 김병현 애리조나 시구 하러갔을떄 기자회견떄 옆에서 통역한 뇬 . 다 짤라먹고 고졸 수준 통역하던데
I have seen two of his South Korean Films. The first was Parasite, the second, Mother. Plot and Story line aside, I realize that he finds some of the best natural actors I've seen in any films. His Casting in his Korean films to me are perfect.

As a person who was born and raised in Poland he reminds me so much of polish directors specially Kieslowski i think thats why hes movies are so popular in Poland , Memories of murder still to this day is one of the best movies ever made , Mother is something like a poetry on screen and Snowpiercer and Host are both great action movies with deeper meaning all i can say Bong Joon Ho is one on the best directors working today most likely top 5

Just got back from Parasite and god damn I'm still in awe. This film was art at it's finest - you can tell Bong Joon Ho loves his craft, and wants us to truly *experience* his films. Easily my favourite of the year, along with The Lighthouse and Joker.

What I find interesting is the audience’s questions on state funding and censorship.. Where do they get this idea from? 🙄 I’m so glad Bong made it crystal clear that there has been no such thing (since mid 90s). If there’s any state support it goes to small artists who actually need MORE state help than what they currently get.

American distributer tried to take off 20 minutes from snow piercer footage. it was a scene with a fish. Bong said that scene is related with his parents and was maintained.
49:42 봉감독 말 "버스가 달리는 각도랑 길을 미리 다 맞춰 놓고" calculate the angles of the running bus and the road라고 해야 하는데 we had to calculate the exact direction of the sun and the speed of the bus"라고 오역했네요. 태양광의 각도나 자동차의 속도에 대해서는 얘기 안했는데요? 너무 심한 의역 아닌가요? "미리 날짜를 정해놨다"는 말도 통역사가 통역 안했네요. 그리고 yanking out the decade long tumor from my heart라고 헀는데 heart 아니고 chest라고 하는 게 맞습니다. heart는 "가슴"이라기 보다 "심장"이죠.
번역이 아니라 통역, 그것도 기록에 남아서 많은 사람이 보게될 통역이고 (자신의 전공 분야이고 같은 주제에 대해 동일한 화자를 위해 반복적으로 통역을 하시는 것이긴 하나) 깊이 있는 이야기를 통역하는 점을 감안해야 할 것 같아요. 게다가 장시간 하다 보면 집중력이 떨어지는 순간이 옵니다. 우리말도 꼬일 텐데요. (참고로, 다른 분 위해서 말씀드리자면 동시통역은 아니구 순차통역입니다^^)
"I also tutored a very rich family."-> "I also tutored a son of a very rich family." He didn't tutor the whole rich family but a son in the rich house / "eery feeling" is not also appropriate in that context. He said 생경함에서 오는 묘한 기분이 but here "묘한" shouldn't be translated into "eery" which refers to the "scary feeling or goose bumps" when you see something scary or bizarre. But "묘한" in this context is the feeling he had as if he was living in a lower level of life unlike the wealth people and he felt somewhat inferior to them because a sauna in a house is such an object he had never imagined to be in his own house. I'd rather translate 묘한 기분 as "sense of alienation". "Eery" is an adjective the translator interpreted 묘한 in her own way and it doesn't reflect the director's feeling properly from my understanding. It's not easy to translate "someone else's feeling" in just one word .

ㅎㅎㅎ시간 딜레이없이 이뤄지는 통역을 이렇게 해체하는게 좀 그렇네요. 즉석에서 바로 질문을 받아 모국어로 대답을 할 때 조차 완벽한 문법과 논리로 말하지 않는데 말이죠. 그리고 그게 실시간 대화이기도 합니다. 조금의 말의 오류가 있어도 청자가 맥락을 통해 올바로 이해하는 것 말이죠. 저기서 통역을 부잣집 아들이 아닌 부잣집으로 했다고 해서 과연 듣는 이들이 과외의 대상이 가족 전체라고 받아들였을까요? 그렇게 듣는 사람이 오히려 이상한거겠죠. 또한 eerie는 spooky, frightening, sinister란 늬앙스도 있지만 strange, uncanny, unnatural, unreal이란 늬앙스도 포함합니다. 님이 애초에 봉 감독님의 말을 잘못 알아들었는데, 감독님은 "생경함에서 오는 묘한 기분"이 아니라 "생경하면서 묘한 기분"이라고 했습니다. 뭐가 됐든 여기서 eerie라는 어휘는 영화가 전반적으로 갖는 서늘하면서 생경하면서 묘한 분위기를 한 단어로 압축해서 잘 보여주는 단어입니다. 타인의 감정을 한 단어로 번역할 수는 없다고 했는데, 첫째, 많은 단어들이 한 가지 뜻만 지니는 것은 아닙니다. 여러 의미를 함축하고 있기도 하고, 그 의미가 문맥 속에서 다양하게 변화됩니다. 둘째, 통역은 에세이 라이팅이나 소설 번역이 아닙니다. 한 문장 한 문장을 고심하면서 써내려가는게 아니라 순간적으로 지나가는 말들을 빠르게 옮겨야 하는 작업인데 그런 통역의 트랜스크립트를 가져다가 한 단어 씩 회뜨듯 분석하면 세상에 과연 무오류의 통역이 얼마나 될까요? 님이 지적한 eerie는 깊게 따지면 문장이 틀렸다 맞았다 보다는 대화와 문장 전체 늬앙스를 받아들이는 주관적 해석에 가까운 문제라서 문제없이 넘어갈 수 있는 것으로 보여집니다. 오히려 저는 님이 주장한 sense of ailination은 무리나 환경으로부터 고립된 감정을 뜻하는데 과연 님이 고심 끝에 내놓은 저 언어가 봉 감독님이 부잣집 사우나를 보고 생전 처음으로 느꼈을 생경함과 묘한 감정, 그리고 영화가 주는 서늘함을 모두 포괄하는 eerie 보다 더 나은 표현인지 의구심이 드네요. 이건 영어 실력의 문제라기 보단 국어, 문학적 섬세함, 센스의 영역이 아닌가 합니다. 뭐가 됐든 샤론 최씨 만큼 실력있는 통역자를 구하는건 쉽지 않습니다. 한국과 현지에서 지금 이만큼 샤론 씨가 화제가 되고 있다는 게 그만큼의 재능이 발견되기 쉽지 않다는 반증이겠죠.

미리 사전에 기생충 영화와 봉 감독의 영화 제작 철학 등등에 대해서 충분히 회의를 했겠죠.

49:42 봉감독 말 "버스가 달리는 각도랑 길을 미리 다 맞춰 놓고" calculate the angles of the running bus and the road라고 해야 하는데 we had to calculate the exact direction of the sun and the speed of the bus"라고 오역했네요. 태양광의 각도나 자동차의 속도에 대해서는 얘기 안했는데요? 너무 심한 의역 아닌가요? "미리 날짜를 정해놨다"는 말도 통역사가 통역 안했네요. 그리고 yanking out the decade long tumor from my heart라고 헀는데 heart 아니고 chest라고 하는 게 맞습니다. heart는 "가슴"이라기 보다 "심장"이죠.

번역이 아니라 통역, 그것도 기록에 남아서 많은 사람이 보게될 통역이고 (자신의 전공 분야이고 같은 주제에 대해 동일한 화자를 위해 반복적으로 통역을 하시는 것이긴 하나) 깊이 있는 이야기를 통역하는 점을 감안해야 할 것 같아요. 게다가 장시간 하다 보면 집중력이 떨어지는 순간이 옵니다. 우리말도 꼬일 텐데요. (참고로, 다른 분 위해서 말씀드리자면 동시통역은 아니구 순차통역입니다^^)

봉감독에 대해서 상당한 스터디를 마친 수준 높은 인터뷰라고 생각되요
"I also tutored a very rich family."-> "I also tutored a son of a very rich family." He didn't tutor the whole rich family but a son in the rich house / "eery feeling" is not also appropriate in that context. He said 생경함에서 오는 묘한 기분이 but here "묘한" shouldn't be translated into "eery" which refers to the "scary feeling or goose bumps" when you see something scary or bizarre. But "묘한" in this context is the feeling he had as if he was living in a lower level of life unlike the wealth people and he felt somewhat inferior to them because a sauna in a house is such an object he had never imagined to be in his own house. I'd rather translate 묘한 기분 as "sense of alienation". "Eery" is an adjective the translator interpreted 묘한 in her own way and it doesn't reflect the director's feeling properly from my understanding. It's not easy to translate "someone else's feeling" in just one word .

ㅎㅎㅎ시간 딜레이없이 이뤄지는 통역을 이렇게 해체하는게 좀 그렇네요. 즉석에서 바로 질문을 받아 모국어로 대답을 할 때 조차 완벽한 문법과 논리로 말하지 않는데 말이죠. 그리고 그게 실시간 대화이기도 합니다. 조금의 말의 오류가 있어도 청자가 맥락을 통해 올바로 이해하는 것 말이죠. 저기서 통역을 부잣집 아들이 아닌 부잣집으로 했다고 해서 과연 듣는 이들이 과외의 대상이 가족 전체라고 받아들였을까요? 그렇게 듣는 사람이 오히려 이상한거겠죠. 또한 eerie는 spooky, frightening, sinister란 늬앙스도 있지만 strange, uncanny, unnatural, unreal이란 늬앙스도 포함합니다. 님이 애초에 봉 감독님의 말을 잘못 알아들었는데, 감독님은 "생경함에서 오는 묘한 기분"이 아니라 "생경하면서 묘한 기분"이라고 했습니다. 뭐가 됐든 여기서 eerie라는 어휘는 영화가 전반적으로 갖는 서늘하면서 생경하면서 묘한 분위기를 한 단어로 압축해서 잘 보여주는 단어입니다. 타인의 감정을 한 단어로 번역할 수는 없다고 했는데, 첫째, 많은 단어들이 한 가지 뜻만 지니는 것은 아닙니다. 여러 의미를 함축하고 있기도 하고, 그 의미가 문맥 속에서 다양하게 변화됩니다. 둘째, 통역은 에세이 라이팅이나 소설 번역이 아닙니다. 한 문장 한 문장을 고심하면서 써내려가는게 아니라 순간적으로 지나가는 말들을 빠르게 옮겨야 하는 작업인데 그런 통역의 트랜스크립트를 가져다가 한 단어 씩 회뜨듯 분석하면 세상에 과연 무오류의 통역이 얼마나 될까요? 님이 지적한 eerie는 깊게 따지면 문장이 틀렸다 맞았다 보다는 대화와 문장 전체 늬앙스를 받아들이는 주관적 해석에 가까운 문제라서 문제없이 넘어갈 수 있는 것으로 보여집니다. 오히려 저는 님이 주장한 sense of ailination은 무리나 환경으로부터 고립된 감정을 뜻하는데 과연 님이 고심 끝에 내놓은 저 언어가 봉 감독님이 부잣집 사우나를 보고 생전 처음으로 느꼈을 생경함과 묘한 감정, 그리고 영화가 주는 서늘함을 모두 포괄하는 eerie 보다 더 나은 표현인지 의구심이 드네요. 이건 영어 실력의 문제라기 보단 국어, 문학적 섬세함, 센스의 영역이 아닌가 합니다. At the end of the day, all I saw in you was "jealousy" and "cockiness" trying to show off your little knowledge of English, which ended up failing.
