I've seen every Bong Joon-ho film, and he's one of my favorite directors. But I'm here today because I was blown away by PARASITE last night.
honestly the best translator i've ever seen in any korean/english interview ever. no nuances lost even in social translations and great reauthoring of joon ho's genius.

Wonderful filmmaker and he also seems like a good, cool dude. Considering how often my favorite filmmakers turn out to be assholes, Bong has always seemed like a decent human.

The translator is great. The filmmaker has a great sense of humour. The interviewer could have dug down deeper, interrogated, the modus operandi of the practitioner. It was a discussion, interesting, but it was left wanting,,,,, for me.
I don't think the translator was great at all. I want to see Sharon Choi.

He was already a genius back then. Now one of the best filmmakers ever.
I think what makes Bong and Stanley Kubrick so great is they're completely unapologetic with their films. As long as it looks good and has a interesting story to tell, that's it. Whereas other makers like Tarantino, Scorcese, Coens, etc. seem to have the audience in mind. Set up characters here, shock audience there, intensify drama here, lighten mood there, feel good ending, and all should be happy. Bong, like Kubrick ends his films with questionable hope. Was justice truly served? Is there possibility another monster will return? How exactly will humanity survive in the future? His scope is so vast, yet his stories so simple. Or vice versa? And yes, as long as people hang art in their homes, they will go out to the movies. Bong is a fantastic artist that should be seen by many for decades to come!

Yeah, because when I think of Raging Bull, No Country for Old Men and Reservoir Dogs, I think 'feel good ending'
Just because a film isn't some sort of social commentary or an exploration into human existence doesn't mean it can't be unapologetically the director's vision.
this is a dumb take
the only director who ended his movie with real hope--for this year's academy awards and if that's what anyone's focusing on anyway--is tarantino. scorcese treats violence as violence and doesn't philosophize anything beyond that. cohens treat violence as a form of entertainment, as usual. bong is open and objective and treats violence as a rational justification. wth.
i think when bong first structured this specific script, he started with one very simple idea, then built on that. a western mind. and the audience, led by interpretors, are projecting their own ideas, which bong probably didn't even think about. it is interesting how a work takes on a life of its own, while reflecting what's going on inside the overall mass mind. it is interesting that there are very very few highly individual interpretations.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, who made the game Dark Souls, also grew up piecing together English language stories. In Miyazaki's case it was reading fantasy novels/Lovecraft, and like Bong Joo Ho, as a kid he filled in the gaps for the parts of the story he didn't understand. I wonder if this allowed them to exercise their creativity young and helped able them to become masters in their crafts.

I would've loved to ask Bong his feeling of American occupation and influence, not only for himself but South Korea as well. With Memories, and The Host, there was a cynical envy that America wasn't giving Korea as much. Or was treating Korea like backwood hillbillies that were easily manipulated. However in Snowpiercer and Okja, there's more trust to the America aspect in way of unity and progress. Yet Bong slyly makes the Americans as the ones easily manipulated when it comes to the right thing to do.

When it comes to deeper topics, one might feel like they are not able to express clearly in a second language, even if they speak it quite well
I'm Korean and has learned English for so long time but it's still hard to speak & write in English though i can read and hear quiet well relatively. I think each part of using language(hearing, reading, speaking, writing) needs different skills.
