V4E18: Backcountry to Gold Butte

  • This week kicks off with an arduous, but wonderfully scenic hike through Bryce National Park. Thereafter, I take to the BLM roads of Nevada, traveling as far south as Gold Butte National Monument, where deteriorated backcountry routes put the Jeep to the test, and ultimately take their toll. This episode is dedicated to Lloyd Bray.

Love your channel and the gentle way you put the films together, its very refreshing and a joy to watch, particularly for me being in England - I don't get to experience the amazing landscapes that you guys can explore in the US and Canada/Alaska. My sincere condolences on the loss of your friend. (Nige - Battleship Overland, England)

I have been waiting for someone to explore the Gold Butte area with. Sorry we missed each other. But after seeing those ruts that you fell into, I'll take a rain check. With my stock JK, my JEEP would still be stranded in Gold Butte today. This is one of the best videos that you have done. The videos were so sharp and clear...larger than life. Like many of the others, sorry to hear about your friend...your tribute was well done. If you need the air compressor, I will supply one the next time that you pass through Las Vegas. Take care and be safe.

Thanks for letting the scenery speak for itself when you're hiking. It reminds me of Charles Kuralt on Sunday Mornings back in the day, when there were still American TV shows. I sort of hope you're heading towards Death Valley, Mojave Preserve, and Joshua Tree, for selfish reasons because I'm fond of the places, and altruistic since it would be some of the best Mojave films ever made. After Arizona of course.

    Takeaway from this week:
    1) I've lived and traveled "near" the places Chris traveled this week and haven't really experienced them like this - kicking myself now.
    2) Loyd was only 4 years older than me...another reminder to me that "the most dangerous risk of all is the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later." (Randy Komisar)
Thanks for sharing your adventures Chris, and inspiring us to begin our own.

I have been enjoying your videos. About a month ago, I flew into Las Vegas and did a clockwise circle tour of the Southwest mainly to end up in Albuquerque to see the balloon fiesta. At any rate, I took the Cedar City route to Bryce Canyon and went up to Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument as well (mainly to avoid Zion traffic). There was several inches of snow on the ground from the previous night and I was able to take some incredible photos. Cedar Breaks also came to me as a complete surprise despite the fact that I have been on that road in the past. It's nice to find these gems hidden in plain sight! Safe travels!

On another note, it was nice to meet you at Ella mountain on Tuesday. It looked like you found Pennsylvania Canyon for the trip east from there.
Also, I regarding the replacement of the caliper bolt: I've had a couple drop out, and it usually was because someone removed the caliper and used the same bolts to replace it. Mopar recommends the replacement of those bolts with new Mopar bolts any time they are removed, as they come with a special coating that holds better than Loctite (beit blue or red!) The fronts should be torqued to 120ft/lbs and rears should be 55ft/lbs. Call, or email, and I can give you more specifics,

Wondering if you ever drove through High Rock Canyon in north west Nevada?
Had a lot of fun never finding it a few years back. I was just going on the verbal directions (with lots of vague hand gestures) from a few rancher good-old-boys who looked at me like I was nuts! I showed them a postcard I found in the breakfast joint where they were chowin' down in Surprise Valley California.
Probably a good thing i didnt find it since I was just driving some kind of all wheel drive rental * Ha *
    I've since heard it's pretty awesome *!*
