V4E16: Beyond the Wilds of Capitol Reef

  • A dramatic change of scenery this week, as I delve into southern Utah. Snow-capped mountains give way to plateaus and buttes of sandstone and red rock. I experience some warmer weather as I explore Capitol Reef National Park, and the surrounding wilderness, both by foot and by Jeep.

Thank you for a great video. My husband and I have 2 jeeps and have explored many backroads in Southern Utah for many years. The quality of your video is the best I've ever seen. I have seen dozens if not hundreds of jeep videos over the years since my husband loves this form of entertainment and we learn about jeep mods, trails, places we've gone or want to go, etc. Most of the time, I tune a good portion of the videos out because they are lacking in quality and the music is usually absolutely awful - to the point where I ask him to turn the volume way down. Your video was quite the exception and I was amazed by the detail that you captured. Truly exceptional! Thanks.

You gotta love Utah baby! So much diversity, from pine and aspen covered mountains to sagebrush covered valley floors, to Salt flat desert to the beautiful red canyon areas of southern Utah. Also the history of western migration that moved through this state. It's my home and I love it! Thank you Chris for showing Utah in all her glory, you said it best "Awesome"! PS very good driving skills in very muddy terrain!

Chris all my life I’ve washed my vehicles, sometimes more than once a week. But I will have to admit to being lazy of late. We have 6000 miles of bugs on one car that’s been to Oregon twice in fifty days, and one parked outdoors that just recently returned from a very long service visit. That leaves one remaining in the garage that’s relatively clean as it’s not been driven in a while...
Yes I know I could trade all of this in on a very nice Jeep... patience grasshopper there’s a plan a foot...
Lately I’ve been rethinking my “clean vehicle obsession”, if I’m going to see some of these amazing places that you’ve been sharing whatever I drive is going to get dirty. The reward will be the first hand experience of being there, and the memories I capture with my camera. It’s awesome when I go back a couple of years in my photos and the memories of a particular day come flooding back to me. I can remember the smallest details when looking at a photo...
Keep doing what your doing Chris it’s much appreciated.

A previous comment on this video recommended a winch. The cost and weight of a winch will be insignificant compared to the cost of being pulled out by a commercial wrecker. After over 35 years of off road driving I assure you there are only two types of drivers - "Them that have been stuck and them that's gonna get stuck". In closing, I very much enjoy your videos and you do appear to have developed good driving skills. Be safe. 👍

I had to look up the Glass Mountain. Per Wikipedia: The Glass Mountain is a geologic formation in Lower Cathedral Valley of Capitol Reef National Park consisting of large selenite (gypsum) crystals forming a mound or plug 15 feet high. Gypsum was deposited as sea water evaporated 165 million years ago and then buried under other sediments. The gypsum migrated upwards through fractures in the sediments forming layers and, very rarely, domes like the Glass Mountain. There is only one exposed selenite plug within the park and one other just outside which has been reduced to ground level by collectors.

That look on your face at 19min 42sec... that = euphoria. Exactly how I feel every time I'm in the Utah backcountry. And your gasoline situation amazes me sometimes. It seems like you go so far out (way out) and you're never worried about gas. I've done it, but my concern about it was ever creeping from the back of my mind to the front. This was a great watch. Thank You.

You make a great point about finding camp spots at night. When this happens it's a good time make some miles on the highway at night, presuming it's a regular highway and not a scenic route. This same scenario happened to me on my last trip; it was getting dark and the campground I found was pitch black, and in bear country to boot, so I headed to a nearby motel. The next day I realized I could have looked for a motel ~90 miles farther down my route, and slept in (or not) rather than driving the same distance the next day in morning traffic.

Traveling solo has it's advantages (& disadvantages) it's good to see that you have the ability to call for help. Myself & my young family spent an unplanned night not too far from your first camp one night about 15 yrs. ago, we lost a battery at the overlook. Kids thought is was the best night camping... wife thought otherwise. I got to about plan "D" and was aided by folks (cause I blocked the road) who live about 45 miles from our home, small world. Capital Reef is certainly beautiful, You and your JEEP are living the dream.

Hi … excellent video! I've stayed at that BLM site near Torrey - was there in May 2016 and had the place to myself. I also have the InReach Mini and it works great. I have done quite a bit of hiking in the woods and it still is picking up the satellite signals. I'm like you, when I see a forest road I want to go down it b/c they usually do go by a gem. I miss my 4 x 4 vehicles since I do all my travelling now in a 2wd Class B RV - I don't mind getting it dirty at all. Cheers, Steve

Since you're heading south, as a native in love with the state im compelled to mention Arizona. I don't know if you've ever been there or what your thoughts of it are, but it's nice now. I'm around 7000 feet and it hasnt froze yet, around mid 40s at night with altitude. The Oak in the Mogollon Rim is turning now and it's stunning. There is there following road 300, and the Chiricahua and Dragoon mountains further south by Wilcox where Fort Bowie and Apache Pass are. I was just there at Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoons and the weather is perfect. There is the road from Payson through the Tonto Basin to Apache Lake that is a fantastic drive. National Forest is everywhere, and so are old mines, abandoned towns and Apache Wars battle sites. Camp Verde is interesting with Mingus Mountain next to it leading to Jerome, and with a nice little community called Cherry in the area. Of course there is Sedona, but i don't go there. Visit Arizona!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe those golden trees in that wash were cottonwood trees. I have always found them to be shockingly beautiful in the fall. They are one of the trade-offs of visiting southern Utah during the monsoon season- most slot canyons become too perilous due to the risk of flash flooding, but the fall foliage from the cottonwoods and the quaking aspen is incredible.

Chris, firstly I enjoy your videos. You do a nice job capturing the scenery. Thanks. Now, I have to disagree with you slightly on the need for a lift on your Jeep on that trail. I have been to Capital Reef several times myself and have enjoyed off roading in a Jeep with a stock suspension. That part of the trail you video’d could be done on a stock suspension. You just take different lines than someone with a lifted suspension might. Come back to Utah again, there’s lots more to see and discover. I love the Escalante area, and look forward to exploring the Big Ears area some day. Good luck in your travels!
