- After departing Capitol Reef National Park via a colorful four-wheel drive route, I find myself in Grand Staircase-Escalante, exploring the backcountry along Hole-in-the-Rock Road. There, I experience dark caves, shadowy slot canyons, dramatic rock formations, and miles of vehicle-supported adventure!

I’d say Chris has a very efficient Jeep. Most online channels feature wildly overbuilt machines because 1) either they can due to personal money or external sponsorships, 2) the channels feature people who are a bit clueless, or 3) they aren’t actually overlanding but using the moniker to promote rock crawling or 4 wheeling. Chris actually explores and checks out new places on and off the tarmac which is what overlanding should be. The only thing I’ve seen that I might consider different about his set up is the addition of a spare gas can or two. He know’s his risk tolerance in this area. Mine would all but require an extra 5-10 US gallons somewhere just in case. Lots of respect for Chris’ approach and set-up (even from a Toyota guy.)

The photography is outstanding, agree with all the other Toyota guys. Only thing I suggest is a bit more interaction with people on Chris’s part, he’s becoming a little child wild. Actually weird mood swings.

Incredible footage all around. I’m recently disabled and thus wheelchair bound and unlikely to ever traverse rugged country again. But your weekly videos provide a vicarious respite from the mundane and are greatly appreciated...
There are wheelchair vans and there are incredible overlanding 4x4 vans. I think that you absolutely can do this and there may be organizations that can help you get there.

I can hardly watch this. In 1991 I was head staff for a wilderness program there. For three years and three weeks per month, I hiked those roads and trails. I really miss it. My wife's family settled there in 1886. I spent weeks in those hermit caves. Fixing them up. My goodness, the beds are still there. Thank you, God Bless you for this gift. May God keep you safe. I'm planning a trip to that area in the next few weeks and would like to know where those caves are located off the Burr Trail.
Dan Hamilton so ya hit Escalante from the Panguitch side. Go through Escalante . Head out to the air port or out of town past the high school. About a mile or so Theres a road turning right. Dirt road. Follow it. Stay on it. There should be some signs and you drive down that road to see everything. Don’t worry if you go to far. Hole in the rock is at the end. It’s like over fifty miles if I remember right to see everything. But that’s the road it’s all on. Out on the dessert headed to hole in the rock:) I might be there too in a couple weeks:)

Your Jeep looks very simple and yet, takes you everywhere .Here in Australia to do that sort of off roading anyone (including me) needs to spend (just to be safe) 20 thousand dollars in extras even before leaving the driveway!
We are all afraid of dying in the "off road world" and to avoid that, we prepare our vehicles to the hardest conditions known to man. When thats all done, most of us, only uses the off road vehicle to go to McDonald's and rushes back home to wash any dirt it collected on that trip.
Love watching your videos (from my sofa) somewhere in Australia.
Haha. Here in "America" we install snorkels just to go to McDonald's. Water crossings not included!😉

Here in the Outback, even the smallest spider( red back) can kill you in seconds. Gee, now that I said that, what tha hell am I doing in Australia??
Idk what part of Australia you come from but you dont need to spend 20k on mods to be safe out in the bush.
Nevada, Utah & Arizona are probably the closest to Australia conditions. They are some of the only places in the lower 48 where you can be 100s of miles from pavement. While uncommon, rains in October can cause life threatening flash floods. I would also carry more than that 2.5g of water. There are definitely places out in Utah where you can walk for days before you come across other people should your rig fail. Chris has the InReach Explorer, which should be good there though.
Wow this was probably one of your most epic adventures. But that footage of you hiking through the slot canyons reminded me of that movie 127hrs lol😲
I thought the same thing! Just watch that movie to remind you to be careful in the slot canyon backcountry.

That's Blue John Canyon off the Horseshoe Canyon Section of Canyonlands NP. It's a bit to the SE of him (NE of Hanksville, UT)
@@Hazardbone Carrying a firearm is always a good idea but a weapon with ammo weighs about 4 pounds which is the equivalent of half gallon of water. I always choose to carry as much water as possible. I don't think I would have the guts to self amputate.

great as always. I've probably commented before but 'ill do it again, this is a great channel. i have a bad work schedule where i don't have weekends off and its hard to plan my off days. that being said my family try and get out (Georgia traverse last year, Colorado and moab in 2020) and enjoy the experiences. Your channel is refreshing to see what someone can actually do with some time and determination. I don't bash channels but i got tired of "expedition whatever" and all the money and sponsors they throw out there. Keep up the great videos

I was sorry to hear that you were getting a little bit lonely this week. I can certainly understand that. I recall several trips, that I made alone and realize it would have been more fun had I had someone to share it with. Alone time can be fun, but too much of it is too much of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, mainly because I recalled being where you were in this video. I had just as much fun as you were having. I wish I had discovered this area of the country many years ago when I was a younger man. If I hadn’t moved to that part of the country I would have at least purchased a piece of land out there where I could’ve gone to whenever I wished. To be able to explore that beautiful country at my leisure would have been heaven.I am confined to a wheelchair right now and I do not believe that that would lend itself to too much exploration of slot canyons.Thank you so much for sharing your many adventures.i absolutely love them. I am planning on sticking together with you for many, many more adventures. So drive on my friend. I am sitting here right beside you and enjoying our time together.👍🏻
Great video shot of the Jeep, the mountains behind and the two motorcycles on the right! Great composition! I really appreciate that there is no awful corny and cheesy music in the background playing like all the other channels have. A+ mate!
The sense of spontaneous discovery, such as finding those caves on a whim, is what overland adventuring is all about. You mentioned planning in the previous episode. Plans are just redundant alternatives, B's and C's in case A doesn't pan out. The real fun is discovering, which by definition you can't specifically plan for. Discovering is like winning; and the plans are about putting yourself in the right position to do it. Capitol Reef and Grand-Escalante are flat-out some of the prettiest areas anyone ever sees. The Burr trail & Notom Rd, from Boulder to either Fruita or Bullfrog are good dirt roads for fit 2wd vehicles in this area.
If you get your butt out of the vehicle, and go on foot for a few days, you'll see so much more. So much more!
I've had the pleasure of exploring around Capitol Reef National Park and Escalante Grand Staircase. Hiked a trail called coyote creek and it was absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventures, I love seeing them. The red rock deserts of southern Utah are truly stunning.

Your 1 man show videos are amazing. Its evident you put a lot of work, time and effort into setting up your shots. Good job!!! I kinda cringe though sometimes at the fact that you are alone in very remote places and no winch to help yourself out should you need to. PLEASE get a winch stay safe!!! I do like that you carry the Garmin SOS thingy.

Do this journey, until you are ready to be in one place. And, yes, think of the route out or the safety of the next step, but don't stop. A solitary man has libraries of memories...you are sharing your collection with all of us...WE greatly appreciate them..
Another great episode on my favorite TH-cam channel. Maybe the best episode so far for me, I simply love Escalante and GSENM. I knew that Peek-a-boo and Spooky are crowded in summer, but I did not think they would still be in October. As you mentioned: Be careful out there! There are many Canyons where usually no other people may come to rescue you in case of an emergency. I also loved the potholes part of your video, amazing shots. Don't stay alone out there for too long, maybe take a break and stay with family for the holidays?
In September & October, UT & AZ are full of Germans & other European travelers. It's a pretty good weather time to be there and the creeks are less full so it remains fairly busy.

Mercantile Grocery, picked up a lunch there and lost it and my pack in Spooky Gulch Canyon, 3 guys from Salt lake found my pack and sent it back to Iowa a month later, complete with my lunch still in the pack, i was glad to get the pack, it still contained my Binoc's, new Eye glasses and hat

Jeep living is compromise, like all life. If you lived in a Class B, you'd have comfort, but couldn't go off-road much. I think a popup truck camper on a 4x4 truck is the best of both. Get one with baffroom/shower, you'd have the comfort. And could still get off-road, not as remote as Jeep, but it's all about compromise you can live with long time.

I always say Utah brings out the kid in any adult because of the rocks and those slots make for good adventure. This video I think has been one of the best ones. I find your videos very interesting, entertaining, and educational. I've been through parts of GS-E in my Jeep Wrangler and it is an awesome experience. I know it gets lonely out there, I once spent Christmas eve alone in a small motel unit in Hanksville, UT thousands of miles from my family. Keep your spirits up and know that you are giving people who can't venture out a great opportunity to see what it is like out there in the beautiful American Southwest. 1st vlog of yours i've seen - very nice. I also follow videos by Dana Hollister, Tristan (SUV RVing), and Pastor Randy's NP vlogs. Been to many nat'l parks & monuments & BLM land; the Escalante area & Rt 12 are among my favorites. Last trip from Pa did part of Hole in Rock Rd & Burr Trail (2017) - Devil's Garden & a shorter slot canyon than peek-a-boo. I wanted to drive down Cottonwood Canyon Rd but rental co. gave me front wheel instead of requested 4-wheel drive (Nissan Rogue; wanted Jeep). Next time. Love the area & enjoyed your adventure. Dude this video was awesomeness. I’m down there all the time and actually going again tomorrow. I love that place. I’m stoked because I’m in the process of building an overlander rig so I can expand my reach. Very stoked about they too.
Great video and content. We went to Escalante about a year ago and loved every part of it. We are looking forward to making the trek back to the area. Peek-A-Boo was a lot of fun as well.

Lol. I’ve been a subscriber for years but I missed this one when you published. I took South Draw out of capitol reef last month and it was sketchier than I imagined any trail on a NG Trails Illustrated map can be. Not really too bad, but surprising. And just like you did, I walked down from the top of the of the pass to make sure there were no huge surprises.
For a while I was worried we might be watching 127 hours . . . . be careful out there!
Those slot canyons freaked me out... all I think about in situations like that is flash flooding ... I was doing some geological mapping in a canyon in the Mojave desert (in College) and it was a full sunny day, no clouds .. I heard a rumbling in the wash next over. Upon Investigation it was flash flooding. It turned out that wash headwater initiated in the mountains quite a ways away where it was downpouring rain... those slots ... it would have been all over ... no where to go
Great video, Chris! Watching the video from inside the slot canyon got me thinking that you should do a video on how you get those angles set up. I have this vision of you doing a lot of running back and forth and editing. Keep up the great work!
Very nice. Over the years I've been up and down Hole in the Rock road many times on one adventure or another. I notice you didn't mention the wash boards. Anyway, your photography was well done and certainly did justice to the grandeur of that area. And dude, your pizza looked like it was a little burned.

If you had gone down the 'Hole in the Rock' entry, you would have seen where they carved steps into the cliffs to allow people to walk down. Mid - 80's, any rain on the trail made it impassible, due to the wet clay of the trip. Very enjoyable to see this again...been years since that first trip...

I got the distinct impression you might be headed back to PA soon, to be with family for the holidays. If you choose to stick around in Utah, you have a place at our thanksgiving table up in Cedar Hills!
I couldn't squeeze through a section in Spooky slot canyon even with my pack off, was about 10" wide. Glad I tried that canyon first, otherwise I'd have had to back track on that loop. Dry Fork was my favorite of the three slot canyons in that area, there was plenty of room to explore it with a DSLR and tripod.

I really liked this video. I sit here on the couch wondering how I can get to where you are, but job, calls, wife and kid as well, but hopefully someday I will be able to go on an adventure without time against us. It seems every time we go camping in the mountains it's balls out so we can see as much as possible and by the time we make it back home we're beat up from racing around. Best of luck to you
When I used to do a lot of solo multi-day backpacking trips I had the saying, “Is this solitude or loneliness?”
After a few years of 80/20 split favoring solo trips I started to respond with “loneliness”. I realized I needed to make a change and get back to sharing my outdoors adventures with companions. It helped a lot to see others and their enjoyment for the sights. Now I’m starting to get back to wanting more solo travel after spending a couple years focusing on others. I think it’s an ebb and flow.
Anyways, something to think about man. Think I’ve been in the same situation you might be experiencing. 🤙🏼 Hope this helps. Happy travels my dude.

We drove South Draw Road going the opposite direction into the park from the national forest in August 2018 in our stock 2017 JKU Sport. We didn't have any issues but the light rain and thunder , which were not in the weather forecast, did make it more interesting.
Good to get in there now. That area lost protection last December and alot of it had oil, gas & coal leases from 1996 when the monument was created. I expect it is going to be a very different landscape in the years to come. Changes are already happening in the area and, consequently, we've been making an extra effort to make more trips there now.
I bet his parents held their breath when he stood on the rim of that giant drop to speak to us. DON'T DO THAT TO THEM!

Hi Chris thanks for all the time and effort you put into your video's I have watched them all from the start still trying to catch up to you though, if I may ask or suggest something as a novice 4x4 driver I would love it if as you drive certain tracks if you could tell us your gear selection or low range high range etc I know it is not possible all the time and also other more experienced may find it boring but if you could consider it I for one would appreciate any tips or advice you could offer very much. keep up the great work
