  • We take a walk through Virginia City, Nevada, an amazing wild west town famous for its 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode.
On this episode of Searching for History, Erin and I are on the second day of a road trip from Arizona to our home in Washington State. In this video we visit Virginia City, Nevada. Virginia City is famous for its 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major discovery of silver ore in the United States. About seven million tons of ore was extracted and milled between 1860 and 1880, producing about seven hundred million dollars in today’s money. By 1874 the population had soared to 25,000. By the mid-1870s, fewer and fewer large strikes of ore were being made. By 1881, the Comstock Lode had been exhausted and the city’s population became to decline. By 1890, the population was under 10,000 and by 1930 the population for the entire county numbered in the hundreds. The Virginia City Historic District is a remarkable collection of over 400 historic buildings. Today, Virginia City is an active community with restaurants, shops, hotels, saloons, museums, mine tours, and historic walking tours. This is the twelfth of a twelve-part series that documents the historical and archaeological sites Erin and I visited on our journey to and from Arizona. Join us as we visit Virginia City.

Visitng one of my favorite places. Thanks for touring the town. I love the Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) story there. It is the birthplace of the pen name we all know (had fun making an episode on that last year, If you want to learn more about that story). Keep the good stuff coming.
