Ruthie Henshall is, for me, the prime interpreter of this song. But let us not forget that Ms. LuPone sang it before any other. She was the first Fantine, and, furthermore, the first American actor to win an Olivier award...respect this living legend!
Yes, that's all very good but, ... that Chenille rug provided as a wig for her role as Fantine was terribly distracting! Word had it that wig maker left a trail of bald sheep in his/her trail!
Those saying her acting is bad have to remember and realize that she's singing this outside her show, on live TV. Of course the actings not gonna be as well as if she were actually doing a show! She's not where she is now for nothing.
Her acting is amazing! I think people just got used to Anne Hathaway’s version which is great on camera but anyone that has done musicals would tell you it’s absolutely NOT THE WAY YOU WOULD DO ONSTAGE. In theater, people are not interested in hear you sniffing, sobbing and mumbling your words because youre crying. The music needs to be refined and the lyrics need to be heard clearly by everyone.
@@yuri2604also, broadway vs movie has the balance of being mostly 70% - 30% like, if i’m watching a movie, they better be bringing the acting chops! but if i’m on for theatre, i sure as hell will enjoy the singing more. bc that’s the intention-to deliver lines and acting while singing, not made for the screen. which is why, anne’s version shouldn’t be compared to broadway. she had a hard time playing it and for a theatre actor to chanel it for every single show wouldn’t be good.
I saw the first ever preview at the Barbican in September,1985, I have seen so many Fantines in so many countries since then. Patti LuPone is still the best Fantine I have ever seen.
I saw the london show with Colm Wilkinson and Patti Lupone and I cried all through the first act....believe me this had never ever happened to me in a London musical. Patti sang with such pathos and Colm was magnificent....I never want to see it again as I am sure their performances can be improved upon but my experience at Les Mis was so special I just want it to stay that way.
steveb1164 yea she was! Not the broadway tho! The musical premiered in west end, and she was the original there (unless you mean the non American version)
When listening to singing voice, emotions are overflowing, even slight fluctuations are beautifying. I am enhancing the delicate sense of delicate feeling of the conventional enjoyment of music. Irregular existence, but it is wonderfully full of joy. It is a great favor.
I found Patti LuPone's name on an episode of Law and Order and today I decided to check her biography and her credits. I am in awe of this Diva's talents and magnitude. I'm sitting here smiling my best smile and just totally entranced by her presence. She is absolutely my all-time favorite singer and I owe to her a humble bow for deeply enhancing my life today and all of my tomorrows.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT PATTIS VERSION...is she is hard. brutal. which instead of playing a victim. Works better I think.x PLAYING A STRONG WOMAN, instead of a victim, is even more tragic. x
Thank you! I feel like this version of Fantine is lost on people because they see the blah movie version and think every Fantine needs to be some crumbling weeping flower or the actor isn’t portraying any emotion. If Fantine was a puss, she wouldn’t have been able to do the things she did for her daughter, she would have curled up in a ball in an alley somewhere and died. Having seen the show 30+ times over that past 30 years, the Fantine’s I’ve seen, have never portrayed her as weepy. And as a side note... Cameron Mackintosh remembered seeing Patti, on Broadway, playing Nancy in Oliver and thought she would make a wonderful Fantine. And Nancy wasn’t a weepy, wussy character. So, obviously, he didn’t see Fantine that way either.
Daniel Nault well that’s not really true, the movie moved this song from after Fantine gets fired to after she becomes a prostitute so obviously that version is going to be more tragic. She’s not “wussy” and playing the victim, she’s been abandoned, torn apart literally and physically and forced to sell herself to provide for her child SHE IS A VICTIM, you’re not a pussy for crying at what would literally be the lowest point of your life.
I always feel sorry for "haters" (Previous 2 comments) no matter who they are against. Patti's voice is spectacular and effortless: a true God-given gift. I was honored to see her in "Gypsy", and she was "swell, she was great!" LOL No, I'm not a Patti LuPone fanatic, but I do appreciate this beautiful song, and her talents!
Forgive me, folks, but this version is the #1 top perfect wonderful version for me. I have seen Les Miz in L.A., NY, and again in L.A. Patti Lupone, who originated the role of Fantine is by far my favorite. Period.
Patty is hands down the BEST, and the original Fantine ever! Got to see her in London. Yes I am dating myself...LOL. Everyone else strives to match her interpretation of the role and song, but cannot ever equal. Thank you for posting! Many moments of sheer joy watching this clip! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
Thank you!!! I commented on a post where someone said Bocceli is better. They told me to watch a video of them both singing Nessun Dorma and witness Pavarotti struggling to hit the high notes while Bocelli hits the notes with ease. I had to refrain from starting world war 3.
Patti LuPone was the original Fantine. She did the show in London before they brought the show to Broadway. Randy Graff was cast as Fantine on Broadway. Patti did want to reprise her role on Broadway.
Patti may seem to push a little here and there but her dramatic flair breathes a special life into her already exceptional singing. It makes her the best whether it's tragedy or comedy.
I think she is fantastic. Her voice gives me goose bumps. I don't think this is her best performance. But it is a concert, she didn't even sing the whole song. As far as being a professional and being held to a higher standard, she is still human. Not everyone is 100% on the mark in what we do. Not every performance is like the others.
I work for a dermatologist in NYC and we have a lot of Broadway actors and actresses (some legends), along with tv stars in our office. Botox is used in the upper regions of the face and does not affect anyone's ability to sing.
@AuroraBrent Thanks for the information! I have not seen Lea's version of IDAD and did not know she performed it at the 25th anniversary concert. I have seen Lea's On My Own from that same concert and love it! Thanks again.
It's nice to hear this not all riffy and like a bad Christina Aguilera impersonation that all the girls are doing in the role these days. It's like come on, it's the french revolution not Pop Idol. Patti is the definitive Fantine. This was an excerpt from a variety show performance so, anyone criticizing is just kind of an idiot.
Ruthie Henshall is, for me, the prime interpreter of this song. But let us not forget that Ms. LuPone sang it before any other. She was the first Fantine, and, furthermore, the first American actor to win an Olivier award...respect this living legend!

Her face is far too harsh and brutal to be Fantine on tv or film.
What do you think of Ann Hathaway
@@dancingdan1994
Ann Hathaway won’t and can never be the voice and face of Fantine on stage or on film.
She just doesn’t have the guts to be one.
@@marcusvonhohenlohe agreed

cm1727 Her acting is amazing!! Why else would she be cast as the first ever fantine?!
cm1727 her acting is still great on here

there's sophistication in her performance and I felt the sheer emotion. love this performance, less acrobat, more emotion!
Oui!
How is she so amazing? The Queen of Broadway. Yellow Diamond.
I like to sing, just not around people
Her voice is endless, if that's even possible. She lives this moment and because she does, so do I
fantine's hair just gets staighter and straighter through the years...
Andi Tamayo
just like me.
*not*
Perfectly sang and perfectly acted... am so moved... Patti LuPone is truly one of the best... she is a gem in theatrical arts
I saw the first ever preview at the Barbican in September,1985, I have seen so many Fantines in so many countries since then. Patti LuPone is still the best Fantine I have ever seen.

Perfect memories should never be tried to be revisited in the present moment. Their magic shall always remain in our hearts
You cried because, as Forbidden Broadway taught us, Act One was so damned long.
All I think of when I see this is her smoking a cig and chewing on gum while flipping through a magazine... 😂
❤️❤️❤️
Every time Patti LuPone steps on a stage, I hold my breath waiting for that first note. She is breathtaking and a gem of the theatre.
the original and always Best ,miss Patti Lupone .

This is (in my opinion) the best version of the song. I've heard other versions sungby Patti Lupone, but none as powerful as this one.
Omg Patti Lupone is literally my idol

Little orphan Annie, the grown up years
oh VHS i miss you
The best Fantine ever I think. Good acting and really good musical technique.
You usually good one or the other. But she has both.
She originated the role of Fantine in the first English language show, being the last actor to be casted when rehearsals started in 1985...
Forever worship Patti LuPone.
Lea,then the rest
It's August 2018 and I'm here!
My Diamond!~
My favorite fantines are Patti and Anne
Happy 70, PLP !!!
Pow! Don't mess with Patty.
Absolutely definitive. I love Fantine harder more bitter more desperate but hard......x Madelena Alberto did catch that too.x
Anne Hathaway captured heart-wrenching suffering and degradation... but nothing as agonizing as Patti's wig.
Great
We are not professionals. She does this for a living. She needs to be held to a higher standard.
The way she sings "but the tigers come at night"

Patti LuPone was the original Fantine. She did the show in London before they brought the show to Broadway. Randy Graff was cast as Fantine on Broadway. Patti did want to reprise her role on Broadway.

She can sing.
She depicts Fantine perfectly. If you have ever read the actual book, you'd understand why she does it very well.
i fell like iv heard this song before
