I worked as an usher at the Palace Theatre for Les Mis and would hear this every night and Ruthie Henshall gave an identically perfect performance of this song each and every time. It was always flawless. She's amazing.

@@sashap1547 it was, I loved it. The Palace Theatre was a nice atmospheric place to work as well. I used to stand behind the sound engineers desk and watch him working the massive mixer, he turned everyone's mics up and down in real time and looked like he was playing an instrument. After there I went to usher at the RSC Barbican Center, Comedy of Errors was on at the time which was a lot of fun to see. They designed that production in a very trippy colourful way.

@@elliottgreenwood5543 It was a mixer desk which only did volume. Every singer was miked-up with a tiny head mic, they had to turn them up and down so the only thing which came through the system was those singing at the time. The moment someone stopped singing their fader came down and someone else's was pushed up. There was no auto-tune or processing of any kind going on.

Lea and Ruthie are both wonderful singers. Lea has a golden voice and very emotive, and theatrical. BUT I think I would Go for Ruthie's version. Why? If I close my eyes and just listen to her, she doesn't seem to be performing onstage, she's like singing to herself about her hardships. You would imagine her as a lady with an unkempt look and a torn dress with tears on her cheeks. Her voice quality and the raspiness is that of a fading beauty, suffering, crying and feeling hopeless. She's a perfect Fantine. Lea is the perfect Eponine with a lovely, innocent, dreamy voice.

There was a time when men were kind
    When their voices were soft
    And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
    And the song was exciting
    There was a time
    Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream

Every rendition of this song and performance were very spectacular...but Ruthie had it all, the perfect voice for the emotion needed during that very moment of the scene. The perfect gestures and facial expressions, her acting skills, they're superb. She didn't just brought us the best performance, but the moment, the feelings and the Fantine herself. :'(

None. None at all. Well, at least much less than you think. Any singer will tell you they can sing because they just can. It's natural to them. No forced effort needed. Acting is different and there is a degree of effort. But singing is mostly natural. The singer doesn't have to try to vibrate or has to try to sing on key. It just happens naturally much like the way we naturally know how to talk.

@@lamisere8337 this is very wrong. There are tons of amazing singers that get their voices from years of hard work, with talent too. Don’t discredit their effort. People usually don’t sing with her kind of placement and support naturally, that’s all from practice.

    • @lamisere8337
      @lamisere8337 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@dutchcup4080 You're referring to technique, style, method, and discipline in the art of singing which absolutely can completely change one's experience and performances.
But someone who very audibly cannot sing as in can't hold a note, can't sing on key, and sounds like a warped record will never sound like a naturally talented singer. They can improve but there will always be something iffy about their singing.
I made a recording of myself singing when I was a kid and I was horrified by what I heard when I played it back because to me, I thought I sounded good when listening to my own voice through my own head. What made me sound horrible was my inconsistent vibrato and my technique. But I have always been able to sing on key and not sound distorted. I eventually improved my technique and was inspired by a lot of Patti LuPone and was able to fix my warbly vibrato to one that is just like hers. But I always knew how to do your basic vibrato. If anyone wanted to know how I learned to vibrate and how I learned to sing on key, I would have no idea because it's just something that always came naturally to me and has been polished over the years. I have never come across a non-singer who became a known and talented singer. A good singer can see the potential in others while most non-singers wouldn't have a clue. I'm not going to be ridiculous and claim I am right. Just relaying my own, limited experience and what I've picked up in my 43 years of life. I could very well be wrong and if I am, I welcome the learning experience to be gained from that.

Typing through the tears right now. This song makes me cry every time. I’m not really the type to get caught up in the emotions of a movie/performance (I do sometimes but it is seldom) but Les Mis and especially this song have me sobbing. Empty Chairs and Empty tables also pulls the heartstrings a bit too hard, but the mixture of her voice, the beautiful instrumentation, and the lyrics is so incredibly heartbreaking. “I was young and unafraid, and dreams were made and used and wasted, there was no ransom to be paid, no song unsung, no wine untasted.” That part really hits me when I think of the fun I used to have being young and carefree and how now my life is flooded with longing and responsibility. Beautiful performance. Look forward to revisiting next time I need a good cry.

I love every version, including Anne's, but some would say they cheapened the song a bit by placing it after she had gone into prostitution whereas that's not how it was originally written. Meanwhile, any actor can cry real tears. They went for the more contrived emotion to get an Oscar rather than honoring the true spirit of the song. Ruthie's singing (also live, obviously) is definitely superior though.

    • @bengemeister

I agree, and have posted so. With Anne, she's too totally degraded for the song to matter. In this version, Ruthie is still clinging to that impossible hope that her lover will come back, and this song shows that she has come to the realization that it ain't going to happen, and she is totally crushed.
