I love that "a warrior of black and white" a surface level is obviously Po but on a spiritual level also implies one who has found inner peace. A balance of yin and yang.
Well, I will put forward a (probably not original argument) that Shen is actually the "warrior of black and white", both because he is a white and black peacock, but also because he has such a stark, diametric-focused world view. Shen works off of the classic view of "Powerful vs Weak", that if you cannot be absolutely powerful, then you are inherently weak and will be abused by someone else. Shen is also killed by his own weapon turned on him, both the canon balls being flung back and when the canon crushes him on the barge; on a more "spiritual" level, Shen is also killed by his own fears and hubris: if he is not all powerful, then he will be a failure. He made a weapon that he believed could "kill" Kung Fu, but it is also opposed fundamentally to Kung Fu: the canon is an artificial construct, external from the wielder and requires virtually no skill to use, and by it's very nature is volatile, while martial arts are internal, understanding not only how to make your own body a weapon, but -as is the theme of the movie- how to bring your own mind and emotions into stability, a serene mind and soul. It's also a fun game to contrast them: Shen is consumed by revenge, while Po is forgiving by nature. Shen is small, agile, serious, and relies on weapons and tools; Po is big, goofy, will only use environmental items as non-lethally as possible, and fights like a bouncy-ball with a jet engine. Po learns the truth of his past, and though painful, he accepts it: it happened, it cannot be changed, and with intentional purpose lets that pain go. Shen is consumed by his past, the pain of it and the denial of it, which fuels his ambitions, his violence, and gives form to the firework canons; Po's pain is turned into the love of his friends and his commitment to be the Dragon Warrior for all. Like most prophecies it is ~just~ vague enough to allow hubris to turn it into reality: throw a stick at both our ancient legends and modern fictions and you will find this use of prophecy. In fairness, it's a really compelling writing trick, able to give an inciting action, a little exposition, and set the scene for what follows. Both Po and Shen are the Warrior of Black and White, individually and together in their opposing views and actions.
I always felt that on some level Shen is aware his parents loved him. He’s just so scared that if he admits it he admits he commuted atrocities for no reason. When he dies, he closes his eyes and almost looks forward to it
Master Oogway said, "A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.” 1st movie: Master Shifu sent a message to the prison to increase security and actually released Tai Lung. 2nd movie: Lord Shen decided to try and kill off all the pandas and technically created Po / The Dragon Warrior which led to his downfall.
This is exactly why those that can see the future or fortune tellers is so weird to me. You know something will happen and telling people that it will happened makes them take actions that literally provoke the future.
@@josy3504Possibly why they tell it, to get it all started. It is an unavoidable future that must happen after all. In this movie she said she didn't foresee Shen doing what he did, though, she just saw the outcome. Him being defeated by a warrior of black and white. She didn't know the dude would commit genocide in response.
"Your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn't make you who you are. It's the rest of your story. Who you choose to be." One of my favorite story sentiments.
It's also amazing that most of the time you don't even recognize the guy. Like it's hard to tell with Shen's voice or see through his get up as Zorg in the Fifth Element
No joke - for the *longest* time, i actually thought that Shen was voiced by David Bowie - i know it sounds nuts, but hear me out - Gary Oldman sounds like he's doing an older version of Jareth from The Labyrinth lol
Everyone I know felt the same emotions as you Addie when it came to the full flashback scene of his mother protecting him and the reveal of his father and then a second later, a surviving panda community. This sequel was pure awesomeness 😂
One of the, if not *THE* best Dreamworks movie. I'm also surprised why so many people don't immediately get that Shen killed the pandas...I'd always assumed it was telegraphed very clearly through visuals, and I instantly catched that when I was ten..But many people I now watch reacting to this movie, don't seem to get this until it's stated openly
One criticism I've seen leveled at this trilogy, is that Po is constantly having to "figure out who he is", but that's missing the forest for the trees. We're constantly discovering who we are in life. And when we learn major things about our past and about the ones we care for, we take that onto our identities as well. This trilogy stands as one of the best trilogies in cinema history, period.
To paraphrase a comment I saw on another reaction to these films: the first film is about Po figuring out who he is now, the second is about him figuring out who he was, and the third is him figuring out what he will be
Have to agree with the comment above me. The third movie is not even close to the first two. One of its main faults is the villain - Kai is just not as complex and interesting as Tai Lung and Shen.
@@tycol322the 3rd was good it was fun and his biological dad interacted with his adaptod dad in it and l thought po was funny in it in some scenes and Kai does have a different ability different way of being a villian yes his story was not fleshed enough but l still liked his music and the fact nobody heard of him every time he saw someone l that was a bit funny to me and when po first interacted with him face to face and the pandas were cute and funny
watching addie's joy and squeals due to overwhelming emotion from the kfp series is beautiful i only watched these initially because my niece wanted to watch them, and i ended up loving them as well. a brilliant trilogy
Shen might be considered a warrior of black and white since he's a white peacock, he trained in marital arts, dagger and weapon combat, he bested two masters. This could be further implied as the travel/get ready montage was playing, it went to black and grey, and showed po/shen on opposite sides, then reverse/swap places to the ying yang symbol. Shows they are similar but also different. And he led himself to his own demise bc he wouldn't stop, po just avoided/dodged. He himself was his own undoing, he could've stopped he chose to keep going.
It's Ska-2 times the awesomeness. I saw it in theaters when it came out but I remember it vaguely. So I plan on rewatching it soon. BTW, I was the one that told you about that post-credit scene from the first film. It was very sweet. You're welcome, Addie.
Easily my favorite of the 3 (can't judge 4 yet!) It has the most (and coolest) fights, and I love Po's interactions with both the villain AND the Furious Five!
Yep, as you saw this movie is simply great. Another "epic" one i think you'd really like is "Kubo and the Two Strings" if you ever want to add more to your backlog.
Ever since you watched the first movie, I wanted to see your reaction for the second one! They really went Empire Strikes Back with this one. Amazing how they managed to make a peacock be so threatening.
2 was always my favorite of the trilogy. I feel like they really stepped up the artistry of the animation and music to a new level over the first which was already brilliant.
Personally I'd rank the three movies from best to worst as 2, 1, 3 The first one is a masterpiece The second is so extremely emotional and never fails to make me cry The third one isn't bad at all, but one of them has to be "the worst"
It's by no means a unique trope, but I love that Po and Shen are basically the same character, black and white animals that had childhood-based trauma. The difference is that Po accepted it and let it go, achieving inner peace, and Shen let it turn him bitter and resentful, full of hatred and vengeance, and that's why Po beats Shen.
Yay!!! I’m so glad you like this movie. You’re very empathetic to the characters and I loved when you worried after tigress and your reaction at the end was so sweet for Po’s panda dad. I love Mr Ping so much though, he’s the cutest goose dad ! Also kinda funny, not sure if it was on purpose, you calling the furious five ‘the fab five’ . Have you seen Spirit stallion of the cimarron? Or cloud with a chance of meatballs?
Luv how Po's dad is willing to let him go by acknowledging po had panda parents but po counters with "you are my dad"! Gets me in the feels every time! ❤️ Great reaction Addie! I can't wait for you to watch the last KFP-lll. Luv ya Addie ❤️💛🐼
Addie! I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are evil! This is the best kung fu panda movie ever! One of dreamworks masterpieces 3 scenes were quite the emotional for me, when po nearly died, when he first found inner piece while having those tearbending flashbacks and when they revealed that po’s father is still alive and well
Notice the nice attention to detail. In the first movie, the archway entrance to his Dad's restaurant got destroyed. Here it's intact again, but you can see the repairs.
I love this movie. It’s probably my favorite of the series. Great balance of funny and heart-wrenching. And of course, who can forget “Nothing's unstoppable except for me when I'm stopping you from telling me something's unstoppable!” 😆
That peach seedling actually played out. Original tree was destroyed, along with DW power, but seedling refuelled it so Po finally had beaten big bad monster.
Dreamworks always kills it with the music in their movies. Httyd and KFP trilogies are the best examples. Obviously Shrek too, but I mean background music without singing
We must protect Addie at all costs. So pure. Absolutely loved this reaction. I can def say Dreamworks make some of the best sequels let alone trilogies of animated cinema.
Okay while I do agree on most of that, Dreamworks actually tends to do poorly after the second movie, Shrek 3 and especially 4 are stupid, how to train your dragon 3 is kinda meh but not as bad, and kung fu panda 3..... is horrible, I'm sorry but it really is, it completely destroyes the entire point of the second movie.
Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon, two of the best trilogies ever made, IMHO. 29:10 There actually is an animated movie called just that, Epic, and it kinda is. It's made by Blue Sky, perhaps best known for the Ice Age movies. I think it might be worth a reaction.
Addie, that is the best reaction I have seen to the reveal of Po's biological dad and the panda village! I can't wait to see your reaction to Kung Fu Panda 3! Keep being sweet and awesome! 😊
I read somewhere the Shen sealed his fate by attacking the pandas. Shen not only killed the pandas but all creatures who resembled black and white, so who else is in that category, none other than Tai Lang, hence why he was outside the temple when Shifu found him and because of this it was destined for Po to become the dragon warrior, defeat Shen and protect China.
@@centurynerdbrthe third has a lot going for it; it's the most visually creative and rounds off the trilogy in a satisfying way, but script wise it's the weakest. The gags are on a par with Despicable Me/Minions movies, by which I mean "meh".
