    Hi Michael. This was definately the shave of my life. In times of strife, turmoil and chaos, I will reflect back and remember the peace of mind this shave provided. Happy trails Kimosabi.🙂

      So glad to hear that! I have learned so much from TH-cam tutorials, and I had been answering so many questions online with copy/paste, and I thought I could perhaps make a tutorial of my own! If nobody liked it, well, no harm, just perhaps a complete disintegration of my personal confidence, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

    As always an enjoyable video. Last week I finally picked up the Supply. So far I really like it. For me, a little more comfortable than my vintage Schicks.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vintage Schicks are really pretty good, I agree, but the Supply just adds a touch of weight and solidity that helps the shave, I feel.

    Howdy Mark! I enjoyed this shave. I 💯 % agree with you in regards to the most aggressive shave possible mythology. If a company offers 10 plates, some immediately want 5 more plates with a higher aggressiveness. Heck, go with a serrated edge- that’ll work. 😉

    I think face latering is fun but not if you have sensitive skin. The extra agitation is not great in that case. So I personally much prefer to scrape soap from a container into a lather bowl (I use the Fine one) and lather it up there, and then do a little but not a lot of face lathering to finish it off. So just sharing that as my own experience because face lathering being great does depend like everything else in shaving, on the YMMV principle. Cheers.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, great point: if you get brush burn, and a lot of people do, bowl lathering and then painting on the lather works a treat.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that, right now, my favorites would Zingari Man (either base), Wholly Kaw (milk base is so good), Saponificio Varesino, some of the Abbate Y La Mantia soaps, and the list goes on and on and on -- there are just too many *amazing* soaps right now that, really, it would take WORK to buy a crappy soap.

    Nice shave Michael. Always enjoying to see you shaving. It's a shame that they changed the formula of the Speick stick. Vegan now. People say it's still good but not the same. Tabac Original is now Vegan too. Looks like butchers should throw fat away instead of sell it to soap makers....

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NEVER! Somebody out there will make use of that fat...but it is sad to see them change up formulations that really have already stood the test of time frankly.

    • @jensebu78
      @jensebu78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mfreedberg believe me, they really did that. Nowadays i guess all has to be vegan. Looks like throwing the fat in the trash is better than making soaps out of it.
      But better make it vegan than let vanishing it. Palmolive Stick, Wilkinson Stick. All not produced anymore 😏

    Been watching your videos for quite some time. Great job! One question: what is the size of the washers you say you install between the handle and shave plate on 3 piece razors? And where do you get them?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's a nylon washer, 1mm thick, 10mm outside diameter, 5mm interior diameter. You can buy them online in bulk, and I think you can now also buy them from Maggard Razors.

    A lot of people seem to recommend the Schick injector blades made in China in the yellow package and also the personna injector blades. Those seem to be the two top ones that I see by quite a great margin as being recommended.
    I have not done a whole lot of playing around with injectors, but have you had a chance to try both of these and have you formed an opinion yet?
    As an aside, just recently I learned that Ted Pella blades are actually the same as the personna.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Schick ones are the best for me, but it's been awhile TBH.

  • @okiedokie_cool
    @okiedokie_cool 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike, how often do you change your blades? Shaves per blade...?

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally get at least 5-6 shaves per blade, but often 10 or so. Sometimes a blade goes for 15-20, but with that said, I also do not feel any pressure to MAKE them go and go.

  • @edwardmiles6513

    When the video went "Rasierseife" it sounded like authentic German. I'd come to believe that anything that sounds like authentic German is against the TH-cam shaving video rules. But nonetheless appropriate for der Tag der deutschen Einheit, and end of Oktoberfest.
    If straights are tuggy, how about shavettes? (Not worth the trouble?) I agree that keeping skin stretched is an issue, but for me it's just a matter of muscle memory. And, FWIW, for me, a shavette is what I use for troublesome clean ups after a DE shave, to get areas that the DE razor can't get acceptably smooth.
    And, of course, kudos to Mark.
    Best wishes to all.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just don't get shavettes, I just think they are designed to be used by one person on another. They feel unnecessarily rough or prone to nicks and in no way better than a standard DE razor, for ME.

      I have never tried it, but it is funny - a colleague and I years ago were debating his genius idea of a razor with a pivoting head that used DE blades. I scoffed, because I did not see the value of the pivoting head, but the Leaf and Twig show that there is in fact a lot of merit to that idea!

    No matter how hard I try, I always get irritation on the third pass on the neck when I go against the grain. I use a Wilkinson Sword Classic(the black one, the first version), a 24mm knot Maggard synthetic shaving brush, Proraso shaving soap and an aftershave balm. Anyone else who has irritation after the ATG pass? Could use some advice.

    • @mfreedberg
      @mfreedberg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two things to think about.
      1. Make sure you are not over-lathering for that third pass. You might be giving yourself some "brush burn" if you are lathering up too vigorously for that third pass. Give your skin a break and just paint on the lather for the third pass.
      2. Try changing the angle of that last pass just a little bit, and really just lightly shave. You may be forcing yourself to shave too hard against the grain, and you can fix that by changing the direction a little bit. You may get a *slightly* less perfect shave, but so what? Shave for comfort first, then worry about a super close shave every time.

    Don't forget that there are folks like me who take that beautiful lather that we whipped up in the bowl and we take several minutes to work it into our face and get to experience the brush and the preparatory effects of the lather into the skin.
    I also pity those guys who whip it up in a bowl and just paint it on and get going right away. They're definitely not experiencing all our hobby has to offer.
    I've even seen some facelatherers who spend less time working their lather up on their face than I do when I take the lather I've made in the bowl and work it in.

    • @jensebu78
      @jensebu78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With sensitive skin you still can use soft synthetic brushes. That should make face lathering possible...
