“I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from The Lion King is a good song for any range 👍 Also here’s a tip: don’t try too hard to sound like the original singer. Use your own voice, and make it your own.
I think I may be an alto. My brother gets annoyed when I sing along to Broadway showtunes and he says the most disturbing part is I sing the boy roles better than the girl roles. Maybe because I'm not straining to hit high notes.
So the best way to know what (classically defined) vocal you are, just choose a comfortable note on the piano; upper middle; and sing a ladder (accompanied by the piano so you don't sink) up from that note, and then down from that note. Look at where you start straining and which note isn't possible anymore - then you have your range defined, and you can go look up which voice type your range is classified as
I'm a contralto if we're getting technical, and tend to sing parts created for tenors pretty well, then crack when I try to get into the lead female parts. So you're likely there as well, depending on where your voice switches are. Anything above that A flat (A4) in the middle of the scale for me sounds awful because the note is coming just from my weak head. I can sing up there, don't get me wrong, but my best stuff is between that G above middle C (G4) and the F below middle C (F3), but can get down to a D flat below that (D3) on a good day. Main thing, get your overall range and then check to see where your voice is strongest as well as where your voice switches from one set of vocal cords to another. If you can figure that out, you can more easily tack down your voice type as mezzos and contraltos tend to get bunched together under the "alto" label despite the fact a lot of "alto" parts in choirs can end up sounding pretty weak when sung by contraltos because they're actually written for the stronger-in-the-middle ranged mezzos. And these labels can also be very loose and fluid because no one's voice is going to 100% match up with any label and there is a LOT of overlap.

So, I’m a young female alto auditioning for my Middle School musical, right? My voice range is lower than most other girls auditioning due to most of them being sopranos, and my family would consider me pretty on-key. I thought I had a pretty good chance of getting a part, heck, I had even chosen a song that benefitted my vocal tone. When I went to sign up to audition, turns out my music teacher only had 1 song from the musical that girls could audition with, and that song was, like, WAY up there for me. (If anyone’s wondering, Doll on a Music Box from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.) I felt that it was really unfair to lower-range singers, and it was really painful to watch my friend who was auditioning with me (who was also an alto) try and hit those notes. I didn’t think I did too bad- it really did a number on my voice though. I wish we could have chosen our own audition songs so that every vocal range could benefit.
At my last audition (in September) almost all of the girls there sang tomorrow from Annie they all got good parts but I sang Welcome to wonderland and got the lead!! My next audition is for Suessical and the 18th of January wish me luck!
For my contralto MT people Fun Home is a really great show. Anything Medium or Big Alison is always good (Maps, Changing my Major, Telephone Wire) at least in my opinion. I have a really deep voice and I usually sing tenor but the belting for a lot of these songs fits pretty well in my range.
I’m an alto and some songs I’ve sung: Part of Your World Edelweiss My Favorite Things Feed the Birds Unfortunately, I’ve just done these in lessons, I haven’t had the option to audition yet.
If you’re singing covers for fun then transposing is great, but it’s not really the best choice for a musical theater audition. In musicals your voice has to fit the part versus writing the part for your voice.
I was always able to understand a lot of Italian writing because it’s very similar to Spanish. I always loved opera so I learned 3 songs by Andrea Bocelli. I know what the words mean. If I can’t reach a song’s pitch I just harmonize which sounds awesome. I just try to have fun. :)

im just looking for a classical audition song for a select choir audition and half of the classical songs here are *not* for altos really. I looked into "must winter come so soon" and thats a soprano 1 piece. i can sing alto to soprano 2/mezzo-soprano but that was a soprano 1 piece. i was really hoping this would be helpful. when i am laid in earth is also mostly a soprano song, it has alto parts but is mainly a soprano piece that not many altos could handle, it would be a part best for true mezzo-sopranos/soprano 2s.
I’m trying to find a song for the ITS festival in my state but it’s hard since I’m an Alto 2, most of the songs I can sing are ones written for a male singer and I only have about a week to find a song. Could you possibly provide some ideas?
This may sound silly but do you have to sing songs by ppl of your own race? I’m black do I have to stick to songs by black ppl to fit a character for an audition?
As long as it’s not a song for a character that depends on race. You probably couldn’t sing Baltimore crabs from hairspray, which is sung by a racist white lady.
My favorite piece to audition with when appropriate to use, is "Everything Else" from Next to Normal. This piece allows me to relax and just focus on the acting part of it. A very powerful and dramatic piece and when done well, you can hear a pin drop in the casting room.

Cierra Downing what range are you?
im just looking for a classical audition song for a select choir audition and half of the classical songs here are *not* for altos really.
I recently used “if I could tell her” from dear Evan Hansen and it worked for me.
This may sound silly but do you have to sing songs by ppl of your own race? I’m black do I have to stick to songs by black ppl to fit a character for an audition?
No! Of course not!
As long as it’s not a song for a character that depends on race. You probably couldn’t sing Baltimore crabs from hairspray, which is sung by a racist white lady.
I'm not here to audition for anything. I'm here so I can learn a song or two that I actually can sing. XD
My favorite piece to audition with when appropriate to use, is "Everything Else" from Next to Normal. This piece allows me to relax and just focus on the acting part of it. A very powerful and dramatic piece and when done well, you can hear a pin drop in the casting room.
