Empty Chairs at Empty Tables is a great Baritone song to showcase acting while singing as well as your actual capabilities in music. I have no clue if it's overdone or not - nobody has told me, but I wouldn't be surprised considering Les Mis is popular. If your range can stretch a little higher, "Funny" from City of Angels can be a good one as well for the same reasons
Betsy, thank you for sharing your plethora of knowledge in all your outstanding videos. We are all very lucky that you share so much of your helpful advice with all of us watching.
Not saying I'd use all of these in auditions, but Marius in Les Mis, Anthony in Sweeney Todd, and Tommy in Brigadoon are some lighter baritone roles that are often overlooked. Maybe even Pippin in the original score. Anatoly in Chess is a great high baritone role. Also if you're a baritone with some tenor notes or a strong mix, I feel like Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and Valjean in Les Mis are viable. Both of those sit very well in the baritone voice, with some tenor passages. Raoul in Phantom of the Opera is often played by a tenor but is a strong baritone role, and Phantom can be played by a baritone as well. Of course most Golden Age leading roles were for baritones, but the younger tenor roles often didn't sing all that high either, so I don't think lighter/higher baritones should be afraid of those roles either.
I chose Me from Beauty and the Beast after she brought up the other Beauty and the beast song, worked on it and resumed the video. great minds think alike
And talking about Beauty and the Beast, for baritone I think Gaston's songs are great. The song ''Gaston'', and my favourite: ''The mob song'' (The only problem is that it goes with a choir and other characters)
The dentist form little shop of horror ... or lucas form the Addams family ... but my I age range is from 16 to 39 ... depends on the beard ... so it’s different for me ...
If auditioning for a Disney musical would a Disney song (not in that specific show) be appropriate? For example, would Be Prepared be an appropriate baritone song for auditions?
I have some suggestions. I’m a bass-baritone who ended up training to sing lower tenor roles to sidestep the inevitable roadblock in material. But when I use my more natural middle range I always have a list of options. Some suggestions are, “Pretty Women” (Sweeney Todd is really a bass-baritone role, so this song can help show a decent range and tone for a bass), “Stars” from Les Mis is more of a baritone song, but only tops out at an E. It’s a difficult piece, but with a bass voice can show real power. For a more flexible bass voice you can reach out into different song types. One of my audition songs is “Children Will Listen”. It’s very light, and very pretty. With a bass or baritone voice the song has a whole different vibe, and is a great way to show warmth and tenderness in a male voice. The higher notes can be done in a light head voice to show good vocal control. Not everyone can successfully sing every song, but it shows that you have to look for these ideas and such when looking more material. My favorite bass-baritone audition song is “If Ever I Would Love You” from Camelot. It bottoms out at an A and tops at a D, but when sung correctly is one of the most impressive musical theatre pieces. It’s important when singing it to really put a ton of power into those high Ds, but don’t overdo it. As one bass to another, low notes are not really that important for basses in musical theatre and opera. While yes some roles and ensambles require them, what is far more important is the tone and qualities of your voice. I lack the steeliness that some lower bass voices have, but in its place I have a very warm and rich voice from my bottom to around the high F. In my opinion I prefer this to being a full bass, mostly because I can sing tenor roles if I really want to. To sing bass (or baritone for that matter) requires really good control over not only your voice, but also your acting chops. If you have a very expressive voice, maybe your physical acting is not as necessary, but any comic roles require it. For more material I suggest looking at musicals like South Pacific (Ezio Pinza, one of the greats, has a ton of lower material in there) and other classic stuff. Remember, you don’t need 400 audition songs. Just have a group of them for different occasions and master all of them to maximize your chances of being cast.
There's not a large quantity of bass or bass-bari roles, but there are definitely some that stand out in terms of quality. Sweeney Todd is the first that comes to mind.
@@mariajaxon1529 if you're a mezzo soprano, baritone songs can usually be transposed to your octave and key. (Same goes for baritones wanting to sing a mezzo soprano song)
"Anthem" from Chess but sung in the same key that Kerry Ellis did an octave down (starting on the C below middle C) is fantastic - actually uses a proper baritone range by spending the first verse down in that gorgeous low G to D ish range while also being a sweet ballad. I wish This Is The Moment didn't go up into that top end so quickly because the first verse is one of my favourite things to sing. Obviously Stars exists. Haven't had much luck otherwise, there really isn't a great deal of sensible *low* baritone rep. It's difficult to participate as a bass-bari...
“...or you’re the leading man and not a tenor, in this case.”

I feel like a lot of baritones overlook Marius. He's a great baritone role.

“Me” is great if you have the chops for it.
The Beast is a great baritone role as well.

Is it a good idea to try with My Friends from Sweeney Todd?

Isn't 'Pretty Women' a Duet? How do you work that in an audition? I love that song but how?
Just sing Sweeney's parts where they start singing together. If I'm correct there's a video of Len Cariou on TH-cam singing the song on his own.
There’s a version with just judge singing
see I would love to use "Me" from beauty and the beast, but I'm literally auditioning for the role of Gaston...
Song for beauty and the Beast auditions, best one she gave was from beauty and the beast
Bass lessons??
Ok great my two songs aren’t on this list. I shall never reveal
What are they
Please share your secrets
