I cry like a baby every time I watch this movie. Especially when his son points the gun at him near the end. Soloman's unwavering resolve to get his son back is absolutely beautiful. As a father myself I would go to the end of time for my family.

The conversation he and Archer have while walking together in the wilderness always interests me.
To Solomon, family is everything, while Archer has neither thought nor cared about having a family.

Archers death really struck me…when he’s dying you can see him grab a handful of dirt 27:49. This is a reference to when he was talking to the colonel earlier in the flim 8:34. Archer truly never left africa.

It's a strange dichotomy. It's basically a monopoly, if you don't go through one of the big 3 diamond companies it's called a Blood diamond.
Like say a poor villager found a diamond tomorrow, he can't actually sell it, in fact if he tries to sell it he will be arrested.
It needed to happen to stop the kind of scenes in this movie but at same time it's stripped everyday Africans of the right to sell a diamond they find and lift themselves out of poverty.
      Like a catch-22.

@@noelienoelie8425 And the most sickening part of it all is that we can now make diamonds to a quality that nature never could. We can make perfect diamonds in the lab.. Make them whatever color you want too.. But then that's not the point. The point is to own something no one else can get.

Djimon Hounsou is such a good actor! I think he is one of the best actors of our generation. If you haven't watched Amistad, you really should do it. Hounsou plays Cinque, an African Mende tribesman who is captured by slavers and sent to Cuba (owned by Spain at the time). The slaves revolt, killing the slavers, but have no idea where they are or how to get back to Africa. The ship drifts until it's picked up by the US Coast Guard. The movie is the story of the legal battle for what to do with them and their status. Are they people or goods that can be salvaged and resold? The US Supreme Court ended up resolving the case in 1841.

Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the songs played in this film (during the scene where the RUF celebrates the siege of Freetown, called Baai) features the rapper Emmanuel Jal, who was a child soldier who survived and became a musician. Amazing artist, thought you might appreciate that.
Correction: it was during the montage of the RUF training the child soldiers and giving them drugs, not the Freetown siege. Nonetheless, the juxtaposition of such a lovely song with the horror occurring in the scene was a stroke of genius.

An excellent movie, showing the truth about Africa, including that Africa needs her whites, as was slipped into the script. His accent was pretty spot on: did you hear how he 'obtained' his accent? He sacked the voice coach after filming the first scene, and went to find and spend time with real South African mercenaries to learn their accent; only, his character was Rhodesian, not South African, but we can let that slide as he joined the SADF, too. The talk of the 32 Battalion was precious, indeed.
I'm a South African, half Afrikaner, so Afrikaans is my 2nd language, and this film is quite invaluable for me, too.
Two untruths in this film, sadly: the Executive Outcomes PMC, under Colonel Eeben Barlow, the true story behind this film, neither took diamonds nor traded them while wiping out the diamond rebels, in Sierra Leone, in '99, before the UN peace keepers from the UK were called in, instead.

I've met and worked with several South Africans and spent some time with refugees who were rescued from the RUF and groups like them. His accent was spot on. Also, these poor kids are never the same. If you wish to see another film, based on true events, which touches on the subject of child soldiers check out Machine Gun Preacher.

I am a proud Rhodesian and Leonardo Dicaprio's representation of us was spot on

An excellent movie, showing the truth about Africa, including that Africa needs its whites, as was slipped into the script. His accent was pretty spot on: did you hear how he 'obtained' his accent? He sacked the voice coach after filming the first scene, and went to find and spend time with real South African mercenaries to learn their accent; only, his character was Rhodesian, not South African, but we can let that slide. The talk of the 32 Battalion was precious, indeed.
