The delivery of that “oh” is amazing.
I know, right? So much is said in that simple "oh". Vigos answer about what John Wick said in the telephone call too: "Enough".

I've seen a lot of people saying that he stole the dog at the end. If you freeze at just the right time, you can see, "To be euthanized" on the Pit's kennel. So, he didn't steal him, he rescued him.
That's why I said rescued, I noticed the tag too.
I totally agree because the dog was going to be put down and he rescued him John Wick man got to love him
I love the way he kills Josef. No cheesy, revenge movie monologuing, about how "you took everything from me!" He just strides up, and, puts one in his head.
He gave that speech to Viggo because they had a history. Josef was beneath contempt, so John just shot him without a word.

There is no stupid talking, no words exchange at all, maybe some eye exchange here and there, and nobody is explaining to the "bad guy" why you doing it. This is the stupidest thing that exists in the movies, as none of that exist outside of Hollywood movies.
In this case, whoever was making this movie, had a proper approach.
John Wick had already tortured Josef enough. At the Red Circle, he showed him he could have killed him there, in the pool, and instead showed him what he was going to do, shooting that other guy in the head in front of him. Then, he told Josef that his friend was dead, when he called him. Josef spent the whole movie from that point on, terrified, running for his life, freaking out over the gunshots in the video game. Seeing his other friend die in front of him. Then finally, shot in the stomach, which would hurt a lot, before getting finished off.
That sort of stuff may have worked in the 80's/90's but it doesn't need it nowadays. John Wick is badass without all that extra talk 😉👊🏽✨️🖤🔥💯
@@tannhauser5399 I love how The Incredibles ridiculed that trope and made it laughable from that point on. I think the first instance of ridiculing the monologue was Tuco in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly after he shoots a guy while he was monologuing when he says "when it's time to shoot, shoot, don't talk".
John's monologue while he's tied to the chair gives me chills every single time I hear it.
The rage felt real....killer acting.
The "Killed that from me" is delivered so perfectly.
John thinks enough of Viggo to give him the "action hero vengeance speech". He just shoots Josef without saying a word because he's beneath contempt.
As he spoke his voice kept getting rougher and rougher as his rage built to the boiling point. That's pretty spot on with anger.

John Wick is an example of a genuinely masterful level of "show-don't-tell" storytelling. It's not the best I've ever seen, but it's definitely far above the norm, and could still rank among the best.
In a handful of minutes, we're introduced to a character we know nothing about besides his name. We see him bloody, traumatized, probably dying; and he pulls out a cell phone to watch a video of a lovely woman that we quickly learn is his wife, and almost as quickly discover that cancer took her from him. In that time, we see that their love for each other was simple, and sincere, and as full as can be. We see him mourn her, and we mourn with him, simply because none of us want to feel that loss, and we recognize the pain in him.
Then we get the puppy, and the letter, and we get the final piece from that, and his reaction, to knowing just how much these two people loved one another. We don't need to know anything else. We've seen they're good people, we've seen their mutual devotion. We already love John just as a human being. And the puppy is unnaturally cute (but completely real...whoever originally found that puppy deserves a cool few million bucks). We see John and the puppy bond quickly and thoroughly, though we see also how much pain John still feels at even the attempt to move on with life at all.
And then...we get the encounter with the little shitface, and the break-in...and the killing of the dog and the brutalization of a man we respect and sympathize with. And we're heartbroken, and angry, and in shock.
And finally...we get the legend, scary story to frighten children. We learn that John is THE killer of killers. A one-man force of nature, the pale rider...death in human form. We learn that John has murdered more people than most of us have ever met. We learn that he's efficient, ruthless, and unrelenting. And by the time all's said and done, we don't care. It doesn't matter to us that he's a cold-blooded murderer. It doesn't matter to us that he's done the bidding of criminals and worse. It doesn't matter to us that he'd just as readily kill one of us, as anyone else if he had to. Because we already know the "real" John. The man his wife saw in him, the man she loved, the man who loved her. We already respect that man, and we hurt with him. So when we learn that death is his trade, and that he's a true master at his craft, we don't feel revulsion, or fear, or regret. We only feel satisfaction in knowing that he has the capabilities to exact the due, and just, retribution upon those who have so horrifically wronged him.
We cheer for this murderer, and we revel in his carnage...because he's no longer some skilled hitman to us. He's the angel of justice, the angel of death, and we cheer as he takes those who took everything from him.

Well written, Doremi. I would just add that what sells the whole arc is how well Keanu shows what true grief does to you. I know because I have been through it and so has he.
When he breaks reading the last letter his wife wrote to him, I do too ... because I have one of those as well. A decade on that wound is not healed. It never will be. I think I am only alive because we were relatively young when cancer parted us, so my heart could withstand the physical damage it took; a broken heart is not just a poetic turn of phrase; about half of us who lose a spouse die within a couple of years.

What makes it even more heartbreaking when the dog is killed is that in the following scene, you see bloody paw prints leading up to where the dog is laying next to John.
Which means after it was dealt the fatal blow, it crawled back over to John to be next to him as it died.
Yep. You don't mess with people's animals, right or wrong they consider that more than they care about people.

Marcus was always on John's side. When Vigo offers the contact, his first question is if it's an open contract, meaning would other assassins be trying at the same time. Only when he knew it would it be open did he accept the contract, so he'd have an excuse to stay involved and help John.
Marcus really set the bar high for what it means to be a loyal friend

The dog at the end of the movie is Keanu's dog.
According to Kevin Nash, the actor that played Francis, he was John Wick's driver when he was working for Viggo. And when John asked how much weight Francis had lost, John was actually asking how many guards were inside.
According to the subtitles he said he lost 60 lbs. but what he actually said was the weight in kilograms, which is 27 kgs. Twenty-seven was the number of people that were inside.
@Chris Pratt But not completely accurate, Francis clearly says 20 Kilograms (DVATtsat') not 27 (DVATtsat' SYEM). I found that mistranslation jarring the first time I watched it.
I am pretty sure he killed 21 people in the Red Circle but the first 2 weren't guards so Francis' information would have been correct if translated properly and it might have been easier to make that connection when watching the film.
The dog actor for Daisy was a boy called Andy, and was cast for being the cutest little doggo ever.
After filming the family who adopted him from the animal trainer changed his name to Wick.
Regarding the stunts - this movie was directed by Chad Stahelski, who among other things was Keanu Reeves stunt double in the Matrix and a stunt coordinator for the rest of the trilogy and a TON of other big blockbuster movies (seriously look up this guys IMDB credits).
Apparently, Keanu was - and remains - really close with the entire crew from the Matrix movies (for instance - he got the stunt crew Harley Davidson bikes after The Matrix Reloaded). And a bunch of that crew made the John Wick movies I believe.
As such, you will see some cameos from Matrix alumni's - such as the doctor being played byThe Keymaker from The Matrix Reloaded.

Tonally, I just love how they nail the fact that in this underworld of gangsters and killers, John Wick aka "Baba Yaga" is a legend that the older members know well enough to respect and/or fear and the new generation is to young and stupid not to.
Chad Stahelski was also Brandon Lee's body double for the scenes that remained to be filmed after he died.

Apparently lots of stunt people are making their own little indy movies just for the fun of it between regular jobs.
John Wick is that with a big budget and full distribution.
And the Doc was the key maker.
Best line in the movie to me, that expresses how terrifying John is. “You will do nothing, because you can do nothing”
When I watched this movie, there were certain things that made see John a particular way:
He had willingly left his old life behind because he was in love with someone and created a new persona for that new life.
His driving at the airport was his way of trying to deal with his grief the way his new Self would have.
Opening the door to the basement was an allegory for opening up the mental door that led to his old Self.
The breaking through the foundation of his house (the manifestation of his new life) was him breaking through what he had built with his wife.
Getting dressed in the black suit was the final stage of his regression into that old Self.
Good, simple, solid writing without any extra crap to get in the way.
I suspect John's drives at the airport were also his way of wrestling with the question of whether living is worth it, after the only thing he ever loved (his wife) has died.
John stabbed Vigo in the subclavian artery and "shifted gears" with the knife in place. Vigo would have bled out very, very quickly.

@@dr.burtgummerfan439 - this! There a few places on your body when you can do that kind of harm with a knife, bleed anybody to death in just a few minutes (or less).
But yeah, this one is probably the worst - you basically drowning... (in a way).
Even if you will have immediate medical help, one of your lungs could be screw up a bit anyway (or both; sometimes partial or full atelectasis; sure you can re-expand the lungs in some cases but most likely it won't be perfect as it used to be). Anyway, that is a crappy way to go...

In the last car chase, i love how viggo knows john is going to catch up to him so he is just laughing in the back seat knowing no one can stop him.
The fact that Daisy crawled to John made it even hurtful. If it was dog, I think the whole city would've burned.
The scene at the airport I always took as John being near-suicidal, or at the very least trying to work through his rage and grief over the loss of his wife.
You never really get the sense that John is the type of man prone to fits of unprovoked aggression, such that he'd need to get it out of his system before going home to the wife. He's more the cold-blooded type who thawed in the love of a good woman.
John's story is amazing but the introduction to the whole assassins world and the resources and rules. Just fascinating. Great reaction.
This is one of the action films that completely shocks you when you come in blind. Just the story told in first minutes with minimal lines show you everything you need to know before action starts. The prelude for the action is in my opinion masterpiece. This film is just so good when you re-watch it and start looking into a stuff.
The best part of the John Wick franchise and Keanu is the proficiency with guns you see is to an extent real, he regularly practices in real life. Though not an official 3 gun competitor, he could easily compete in competitions. There are several vids of his training sessions along with Halle Berry....just a fun fact.
I have seen one of those videos with him and Halle at the gun range.....holly crap
As a serious shooter myself, Keanu's skill set is damn good. The best vid is him at Taran Tactical. His dedication to the craft makes this almost other-worldly to watch for non-shooters and truly impressive and enjoyable for shooters.
Killed the last memory he had of his wife, his world, the last gift she’d ever be able to give him. I’d be absolutely furious too.

33:55 probably the subclavian artery. It's fed from the brachiocephalic artery on the right side of the body, which also feeds the right carotid artery.
Lacerating an artery in general is a bad idea, but any one of those 3 in particular will definitely ruin your (last) day... (edited cuz I got the timestamp wrong)
This is what happens when one of the world's top stunt teams gets total creative control and a good budget and has a leading actor willing and able to do all of his own action sequences so they can keep the camera on him the whole time. Absolute movie magic.
One of the things this movie does is it has the antagonist explain who the protagonist is, normally it's the other way around. It works so well.
And normally the protagonist is scared of the antagonist, not the other way around, like it is here.
There are a bunch of things to love about this movie, but I'll point out two things that I love that I haven't seen mentioned here yet.
The final scene of John walking along the water with his new dog is the same place where John's wife collapsed on their date. The movie puts John through absolute hell and then brings him back to the beginning. It's a full circle. Which is such a wonderful metaphor for grieving. In grieving, you circle back. Probably multiple times. Maybe you never stop circling back. You move forward a bit. You journey and maybe it hurts and you circle back to your point of grief. You're in the same spot, but you accomplished something and you will be in a slightly better place, even if you are in pain from that journey.
My favorite scene is Jimmy the cop visiting John's house. For this scene to happen this way someone who knows John Wick's address has to be monitoring 911 calls and have the ability to redirect the response to a cop that's in the know. And John's not afraid to open the door with a dead body right there in sight. He knows it'll be fine. He knows there are powers at work that the audience knows nothing about. It's such confident storytelling it convinces the audience that this world is real without explaining how. A less confident creative team would add dialogue to explain it and it would really deflate the magic. If Jimmy the cop said, "Seems like it was a good thing Winston told me to stick close" you wouldn't leave that scene saying "Wow!" it'd become ordinary.
For me the two most intimidating kills are the ones in the basement you commented on: 1) the one where the guy gets the knife stab under the chin while John just stares right through his soul, and 2) the one where he points the gun at Allie Allen as if to say “ Ah! Don’t you even think of moving” and then maintains eye contact while putting a round in someone else’s head. With Viggo’s knife wound at the end, yeah, the subclavian artery is right there under the collarbone about an inch down and big around as your thumb. Sever that and it’s lights out in just a few seconds.
Everyone needs a friend or girlfriend boyfriend wife husband, anyone who will look into your eyes like John looks that guy like he knows your soul...
When a gladiator was ordered to kill a defeated opponent, that was where he stabbed him, straight down through the subclavian into the chest. It was, as you said, very fast. The blade on that knife was at least half the length of the blade on a gladius. It would probably have hit both the subclavian and the aorta - Viggo wouldn't even have had time for that long eye contact and "Be seeing you, John."
@@JimFinley11 If you notice John stabbed him in the right clavicle the aorta is on the left. He still would have bled out quickly but that knife never would have reached all the way to the aorta. That's truth about dispatching an opponent or giving a soldier a warrior's death. Down through the left side clavicle would shred the aorta and heart in one stroke giving a near instant death.
The actor for Viggo passed a few years after but he really sold the John Wick mythos in this movie. Also, you're criticism about the fight, there obviously needed to be some big showdown even though John could have just shot him. John could have easily beaten Viggo but he was already fatigued.
He was also badly injured. During the early part of the fight you see Viggo bounce back into the dumpster after John hits him. This actually happened and opened a big injury on the back of the actors head. He was taken to the hospital for repair work. The rest of the fight was curtailed in deference to this injury.
The Jimmy the cop scene still makes me laugh every time I see it

"How could anyone root for a murderer like this ?"

"F*CKING MURDER EVERYONE !"
One of the interesting things about this movie is also the world building ... Kind of a mythological hit man society with the gold coins and the rules and all ... It builds, as well.
... That and just watching Keanu move the way he does in this movie ... Paraphrasing, but the directors have said it's better to find an actor willing to put in the time to be able to do what's required for a part, than have to hide the switch to a stunt man.
Keanu Reeves is not only a fantastic actor but a fantastic human being never to busy to talk to fans or to help people out... so humble unlike so many stars. just a allround decent person.i made the mistake of letting my dog as a puppy to sleep on my bed... 10 years later i know have to share my bed with a 120lb rotty..

I lost my wife to cancer and for a number of years after her funeral, when I was driving, there was always that 'voice' in the back of my mind, whenever there was something like a bridge abutment coming up, that said "Turn the wheel ... put your foot down".
Losing someone you truly love is an agony that never goes away - I was lucky in that my wife knew me perfectly and made me promise that I would not 'leave' before my natural time but I sometimes think it was the most cruel thing she could have asked of me.
So glad you had a great reaction to the "Oh...' That just really help set the stage for who Mr. Wick is.

The fight scenes, style, and pacing really influenced other action films.
I could also strongly recommend Nobody, with Bob Odenkirk. It too has great story, and fight scene.

Love that phone call between Virgo and Aurelio! To put it in other words:
“You better have a good reason for striking my son.”
Aurelio tells him what happened with John Wick.
“Oh, that is a good reason.”
To me it always seemed like Viggo is making the phone call as a formality because no matter what his son has done, Viggo cannot allow his family to be disrespected in any form. Aurelio is a long time friend so he gives him the courtesy of a phone call before ordering Aurelio's death. Then he hears what really happened and realizes that Aurelio's actions are immaterial. John Wick is coming and bringing hell.
36:00 the simplicity of the plot is what made this movie a surprise hit for me. They just drop you into the middle of John's world and let you fill in the blanks with context clues while John kicks ass. Its the epitome of "show, don't tell".

The reason for the amazing fight scenes is this movie was directed by a stunt man. Keanu Reeves trained MASSIVELY hard for these movies...besides that, he is into guns and loves to shoot at ranges, he shoots at the ones police use to train where shit pops out at you. That explains his movements and his quick reloading. I like and have huge respect for actor that train for a role this much. Tom Cruise being strapped to a jet on take off, Uma learning samurai and learning to speak Japanese and Charlize Theron learning to fight for Atomic Blonde...(THAT you must see...)
Keanu now competes in 3-gun events (he's that good) and he's been doing martial arts since training for the Matrix. The only stunt he didn't do for this movie was the fall to the dance floor.
Yeah, if you search 'KEANU TARAN TACTICAL' here on TH-cam you can watch some videos of him doing firearms training and drills. They're pretty f-ing impressive.
Couple of facts: the guy that played Vigo sadly passed away since and one of the guys wick fights in the nightclub he's already faced before in the matrix reloaded
Killing Joseph seemed short, and it's understandable why you'd want John to torture him some, but if you had been hunted by the bogeyman for 2 days watching him tear through the hardest men money can buy like they're tissue paper...wouldn't you have felt everything torture could accomplish?
I'm on season three of The Orville and not once did I recognize Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins from John Wick... until now. Thank you for that. This series is pure artistry and the GOAT, IMO and I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the series. Btw, you really were meant for this gig. You're an absolute natural. I could never pull this off, lol!

The intro to this movie is, hands down, the hardest one I have EVER watched. I've seen it several times, and I always freakin' bawl.
I think the worst thing about the beginning is when you realise that his dog still managed to make it to his side before it passed. That stayed with me for ages.
Either that or they put the dogs body next to John just to mock him even further.

A lot of people end up knowing about the dog before watching. I personally think not knowing he's a highly respected & feared hitman beforehand gets the best experience out of a first time viewing. While the sequels are awesome AF, they can't match up with that initial subversion of expectation.
I first got interested in this movie by just hearing it was about a man who lost his dog and his car and set out for revenge. That piqued my interest. It’s interesting how feared John Wick is. The fact that Aurelio didn’t just keep John’s car to give back to him. He didn’t even want it in his possession if John came looking for it. I love your editing especially the added comments on the screen. Gotta check out the rest of the series. So far there’s three with a fourth one coming out. What’s good about the series is it’s just one long movie. Each one picks up where the other one ends.
Perfect example of gun-fu. He didn't shoot anyone, he just stabbed them with bullets.
He really is one of the best people on earth, he trained really hard for these movies. Love your reactions, can't wait to see more
Btw, the “impossible task” isn’t revealed in the movies, but it’s confirmed that John needed to kill all of Viggo’s rival gangs *in one night.* Viggo wasn’t exaggerating when he said, “The bodies he [John] buried that day laid a foundation for what we are now.”
How John accomplished this task will be revealed in the next movie so I hope you enjoy it.
I love this trilogy more than the Matrix trilogy personally. The John Wick movies are so consistent and wild that it’s always a good time watching.
Fun Fact:
When John goes to the Club to kill the kid and starts with the bodyguard outside, He says, "You've lost weight" and Francis Replied "Over 60 pounds". This was actually a test AND a code between the two. John was testing him to see if he would help him (which is why he lets him go and tells him to take the night off) and Francis replies Over 60 pounds (or 27 kilograms), a code for nearly 27 security guys/henchman protecting the boy. VERY cool way to again show us how much of a badass and how respected John Wick is. Thats basically FBI communication skills why would John ask him how many pound he lost its absolute nonsense. He's using a glock which holds 17 rounds he's reloading after every 17 shots when he did a tactical reload he puts the mag back in his pocket instead of throwing it away. Also the same things when Marcus shot at the pillow. Marcus is an excellent marksman and would never miss a shot. You can see the wind blowing through his hair right before he shot so he knew when he was aiming for John he would hit the pillow. Marcus didn't accept the contract until he found out it was open, which meant other assassins would be trying to kill him.
Not to forget: He is a WYLD STALLION! 😁 😁 🤘 🤘
Some of Reeve's best acting when he describes what the dog meant to him to Viggo in the church. "... and your son took that from me, stole that from me, killed that from me. So you can either hand over your son or die screaming alongside him!" Executed perfectly! Great reaction and one of the best action movies ever made! :)
Honestly, I'm not totally sure he was acting. The man's fuckin' been THROUGH some shit...lost parts of himself that nobody really "survives" losing. He does what he can in his life to do right by all who remain, but there's no way that sort of pain really goes away. And I think he channeled it straight into the role.
When you think about it, he and John all lost exactly the same things, aside from the fact that John and his wife weren't (to our knowledge) having a kid at the time.
That scene explains why he was called the Baba Yaga. He was freakin terrifying, like a wild animal.

I have always wondered if the 12 man hit squad knew who they were sent after, like, obviously they knew he was a pro or they wouldn't have been so organized, but who specifically. Imagine being the dude who gets the call "we need you to go kill John Wick. In his own house".
I am not sure if they would know who he was, Iosef didn't and Viggo said "laid the foundations of what we are today" which implies John left some years before the events in the film.

Fun fact this movie was directed by Keanu Reeves stunt double from The Matrix, which I feel is why the stunt choreography was so good! Not only that but Keanu received extensive training in shooting, hand to hand combat, amongst other things well before filming began and did pretty much all the stunts that his insurance would allow to do.
I always took "No more bullets." to mean that the only reason John hadn't shot Viggo at the end was because he was out of ammo.
Did a bit of googling. There is the subclavian artery where Viggo is stabbed. Fatal but not immediately. He most likely bled out.
Injuries close to junctions and the trunk like that are difficult to control, especially when they involve major vessels. Junctional tourniquets or improvised junctional tourniquets can work if it’s close enough to the extremity but not likely effective in his case even if they were applied immediately. Dude needs a surgeon and an OR. Best case the knife blade keeps the bleed controlled in place until he gets to surgery.

Lance Reddick was in The Wire, widely regarded as the greatest drama ever put on television, and it seems like everytime someone recognizes him on here they say "oh he's from Fringe" and it just makes me sad for humanity.

Subclavian artery is right there, and can indeed kill you. It is behind the clavical bone, so you have to use a sharp angle to get it, which John did.
You should look up the training Keanu did for this movie. This movie imo is one of the main driving forces that is improving fight and gun choreography in movies. Such a small but deliberate effort gives such a large payout on screen

John let Francis the bouncer go because he told him how many guys are in the club.

Charlie has the best job in the John Wick universe. He must be so rich cleaning up after all the assassins. I do wonder how he prevents any competitors. He might make a scary side movie protagonist.
It took me a while to see this movie as well, and now it's one of my favorites. The world they created is amazing.

Alfie Allen told the writers/directors to make his characters as wicked and hapless as they could and still support the story. They didnt want to pile too much on him and he just told em to go as far as they could with it all.
Yes there is an vein there (Subclavian vein, it runs from the arms and connects with the internal jugular vein), but typically you have to break the collarbone to get to it. Don't ask how I know this.
It was more likely the subclavian artery from where the knife went in. Losing that is pretty much a case of being DOA even if an ambulance gets there quickly.
Supposedly Alfie Allen felt so bad from that scene with the puppy he spent the rest of the day just playing with it off stage.

Keanu Reeves is skilled in martial arts and for John Wick he took firearms training. It's part of what makes these films so good. John was speaking in code when talking on the phone just in case people that could be overhearing it through a wiretap would have a harder time finding out what he was doing or had done.

This was such a refreshing wake up call. Action movies had gotten a bit stale around this time and, outside of Mad Max Fury Road, it didn't have a lot of standouts. You got them from Marvel or Bond or they just didn't stick with you. And they had this incredible texture of the Continental and the villains code that are hinted at but not overexplained. It just showed a bigger world out there. Fantastic!

Keanu did all his training himself for this as well, Keanu is John Wick, he’s a lethal dude even tho he’s such a nice dude in real life
Such a perfect example of 'Show not tell' worldbuilding. The continental, the gold coins, ect. You just see them in action and it makes sense.
I love the poetry and symbolism of him shattering the foundation of his new life, that basement floor, to re-enter his old life, the weapons and coins.
Too many people have thought this was just a nicely choreographed action film. It's nice to see someone who gets all the subtleties in this film.
To answer your questions: Each coin is customized to the assassin, so Wick's coins have a mythological status to them. So they can be like collectible baseball cards, while also being just a coin as well. Tempered glass, like the kind in the nightclub, can alter the trajectory of bullets passing through them. There isn't an exact science as to what happens when a bullet passes through a medium and glass can do crazy things to bullets (the FBI has ballistics testing standards based around this as part of their ammo testing curriculum for this very reason). Wick already got his revenge when he torched the vault, he was only killing Iosef as a means of cleaning up loose ends.

My internal medicine professor once told us that stabbing someone behind the clavicle will pierce the subclavian artery and that short of doing surgery to get inside the rib cage to clamp off the artery, there's no way to stop the bleeding, and the person will bleed to death in seconds.
And, of course, they picked the cutest dog ever. The second I saw that dog, I knew there would be trouble.
The Director said in the John Wick Universe The Cops and The Continental have an understanding to stay out of each others way, and in case's where cops can't do things they hire people of the Continental Hotel to solve problems they can't handle
the fight choreography was so good because this was directed by former stuntmen who were tired of crappy action scenes with shaky cam and quick cuts. and Keanu trained heavily to prepare for this, in martial arts and in gun handling
