    The Volkswagen ID.3 is as important to VW as the Beetle and the Golf. It's the German firm's first bespoke electric car and could really shake up the small family electric car class, especially with its cool looks, quality cabin and decent range.
    But in order for it to make a splash, it's a good idea to compare it to the car that started the whole trend for family hatchback EVs. The Leaf concept is now 10 years old and while the latest one - launched in 2017 - may have lost some of the original car's sparkle, it's still a benchmark.
    We'll be bringing our in-depth of the ID.3 to you very soon, but in the meantime watch this video to see if the ID.3 can take on the established competition. Ginny and Nicki fight it out.

    FYI, B-mode in the ID.3 is not “Max regen”. It’s partial regen. You get Max regen when you press the blended brake pedal or when the predictive speed system or other assist systems hit the brakes for you.
    So, yeah, it’s not a one pedal driving g experience mostly - but not all of us like that anyway.
    FWIW, the assist systems are so good you can have a no pedal driving experience where you literally do not have to use the accelerator or brake. :)

    Like Ginny, I have been blinkered to VAG cars for many years.
    4 Golfs, 2 Audis, 2 Seats and 3 Škodas. However, 2½ years ago I was tempted to test a Nissan LEAF. That was me sold on EVs.
    I had to wait quite a while for the new model, made in Britain, to be released,. My main disappointment, now, is the 38kw battery which has been upgraded to the car in this video. The E-pedal regeneration system is great and changing cars in future will depend on full regenerative breaking (and the overall width to fit my garage door :-) .

    I thought this was "Fully Charged" but pleasantly surprised with this new channel. Being objective the Nissan is the more attractive car in terms of the exterior styling. Reliability is a key parameter and we won't be in a position to assess the ID3 for a few years yet.

    The leaf has an air cooled battery that is left over from the game changing leaf gen 1/2, but now it is technological dead end.
    1) The battery life in leafs has always been less than other battery cars because air cooling is "not ideal".
    2) Rapid charging on a long trip is problematic because the heating can't be managed by the air cooling.
    Although the first and second generation leafs were game changing and are great for their time, this 3rd gen is off the mark, and remember, Nissan will drop the leaf. Nissan future product line will not contain the leaf, but a liquid called battery electric car Ariya. Forget the leaf, review the Ariya in future.
    Oh, and I completely agree - there is no competition for EV cars since they can sell every car built, and during Covid times, the EV cars are the only ones with increasing delivery numbers, while ICE car deliveries have dropped off a cliff.
    Buy the one you can afford, like the look of, and fits your personality, you won't regret it.

      Didn't Elon Musk once say passive battery cooling was a "design goal"? Anyway, there were/are many BEVs w/o active battery thermal management. Plus most conversions. I often drive 300-450mi in 40kWh with little rapidgate effect. There are 3 main problems I see with our Leaf: if you drive over 60mph, battery cooks. Car will suddenly lose power going uphill with battery > 130°F without warning. Few chargers to support 100kWh CHAdeMO for Leaf Plus.

    Leaf II is still good car but the main problem is missing battery cooling. Therefore charging on superchargers is big problem(battery overheating causes very slow charging). There is also problem when is hot weather... I think Nissan did big big mistake not installed battery thermomanagement into L2 but yes, Nissan is focusing to Ariya now :-)

    Don’t get me wrong the Nissan Leaf 62kw is a great car, but it badly needs a refresh maybe with the new water cooled battery being available from the aria it will give Nissan an opportunity to offer a new platform to work on before vw or more importantly Korean manufacturers get to much a bigger lead , but an easy fix would be to add the light interior colour for European models instead of just black, black , boring black

    Is this Nissan Leaf 62kWh E+ Acenta?
    If you talk about cars you want to specify if we are talking about Visia, Acenta or Tekna as examples.
    It matters, Well I now know Visia does not have 62kWh variant at all and Acenta is the cheapest variant where Tekna is the top of the line costing 5k extra for some neat additional things like making the interior have more light colors causing it to seem more cozy while adding stuff like parking 360 camera view and interesting sounding drive assist which you probably can get installed in Acenta.
    Also 9:20 if we take that argument the VW id 3 you drove looks ugly being so gray xD I mean the interior of VW id 3 looked at least as good as Nissan Leaf's Light interior Tekna :D
    The only thing I would complain really, which I did, is that We don't specify which model we are using causing my brain to go "but there is this that and those and why they are not talking about it?" answer being because they probably drove the most basic model possible :D would been nice if that was said in video ... if it was said then I'm just dummy :D

    Although the VW is the newest kid in the EV neighborhood, there are some gripes I have with it. Boot is small-ish. The front end styling is looking rather bland. The inside is al colour orientated, yet the drive mode selector & infotainment screen are definite "afterthoughts". It does block your view through the front windscreen. The Nissan's setup is much more organised and the infotainment screen contains real knobs that is not only easier to use, also much safer. So I feel the majority of manufacturers of EV's have some homework to do to get rid of that "stuck" on screens and seamlessly intigrating them for a more visually appealing design.

    Can't help but think EV technology is still in its infancy. It feels like it needs a real 'game changer' (neither of these cars at £37K scratch that itch) to make it a choice for the masses. I suspect this vid will have the vibe of Betamax vs VHS 10 years from now. Pioneering technology that is expensive and prone to redundancy.

    Actually, the the 62kWh Leaf is the maximum capacity; not the net usable amount. The 58kWh ID.3 is the net rating.
    One-pedal driving is overrated - coasting is where you get more efficiency.
    The flared edge of the center console in the Leaf makes it a non-starter for us folks who are taller (I'm 6'-4" / 193cm), and it cuts into my leg right below the knee.

    • @fintrollpgr
      @fintrollpgr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clearly you have no experience with one-pedal driving. It is absolutely awesome, no need to touch the brakes and it does let you coast also no problem. It is so good Tesla copied it from Nissan. Not having one pedal driving will be a dealbreaker for me in the future. And At 186cm I have no issue with the center console of the Leaf at all.

    • @NeilBlanchard
      @NeilBlanchard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fintrollpgr I have owned 5 EVs and my extended family has had 13 EVs. So, you're not correct about that. Coasting in most 1-pedal cars (the i3 is the exception) it is simply not able to happen for more than a few seconds at a time. If you knew what coasting was like, you would already know this.
      What can I say - I had a 2014 Leaf for 3 years and it was fine, but the second gen is a no-go because of the flared console. And my son is 197cm so that's two out of four drivers who couldn't fit. My brother who is 200cm barely fit in the first gen Leaf; but his i3 REx had the most room of any car he had ever had.

    • @fintrollpgr
      @fintrollpgr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeilBlanchard I know perfectly well what coasting is, and I do it almost every day in my 2019 LEAF with one-pedal driving, since there is a nice long slightly downhill slope on the way to work. You can perfectly lift off your foot of the "gas" up to a point where it does not regen, but does not use electricity either. (ofc you need to use the LEAF in one-pedal mode, not in normal mode for that). Just because one-pedal driving makes it so easy to coast or dose your regen depending on your needs is just why I love it so much.
      And I guess since I fit fine in the LEAF and have no issues with the centre console that there probably is some other difference in physical build or seat adjustement at play than just lenght.

    • @NeilBlanchard
      @NeilBlanchard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fintrollpgr No matter how careful you are with the accelerator, it doesn't work as well at coasting than just lifting your right foot off the pedal. And working that hard takes concentration. There are many more opportunities to coast than you might think.
      I hope that EVs have the option to have 1-pedal for those who like it, and an option to coast when you lift your right foot, for those of us who want to maximize efficiency.
      Regen is great for when you need to slow down, and it makes sense to integrate regen on the pedal used to slow the car down.
      The e-Golf has a center console, but the surface on the side has is flat and comfortable supports my 91cm/36" inseam legs. The flared corner on the new Leaf console is a relatively sharp edge that puts pressure just below my knee cap.

    • @sorglos4332
      @sorglos4332 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you both. One pedal driving and coasting in D mode is great and useful. Interestingly, in the VW e-UP! (I own the sibling Skoda CITIGOe iV) B and 3 different D modes are available. B mode is nearly like one pedal driving the car regens quite hard if you lift your foot and comes closely to a stop. So most of the time the brakes are not in use.
      Possibly, it will be retrofitted via a software update as requested by owners.

    This is such a smart format. Every sales person in the world knows, that women make 70% of purchasing decisions. Here they take two women with two archetype perspectives (novelty seeking tech enthusiast vs. no nonsense practical person), pair each of them with cars fitting those two perspectives, and off they go. Brilliant.

    I test drove the ID3 First Edition yesterday - VERY disappointing. Met with a sea of cheap scratchy plastic inside, touch buttons everywhere that don't work, harsh ride and regen that's poor. On a brighter note, it does drive well, very economical and comfy. Oh yes, expensive compared to its rivals and as I told the salesperson It is definitely not a GOLF.

    Not actually 'in depth' folks. No figures about recharging. No comment about whether the ID3 software is actually working (it hasn't for other reviewers). No info about interior space in the back of either - five seater yeah, but what about tall people and how's the knee room? No info about availibility. Sure it's all very chatty and very pleasant entertainment but not actually very helpful for a serious buyer.

    Truth is that the leaf is the most evolved ev in the world.
    CHAdeMO is the best charging system. It can deliver power both ways and start charging automatically just like tesla superchargers. It's only issue is that the Germans aren't smart enough to put them in their cars.
    Plus the leaf isn't a car that weighs like a truck. It also has the best one pedal driving system. And the rest of the automotive world can't seem to work out how the vehicle to grid system work.

    Love your shows, but please take a look at this show by the Dutch television about the Nissan Leaf : th-cam.com/video/S-KmuELaxPI/w-d-xo.html
    It is in Dutch, so I give the short story :
    On Schiphol Airport taxis must be electric.
    Many taxidrivers bought a Nissan Leaf, advertised as a 378 km car, with fast reloading... and ideal as a taxi (that was in the ad)
    Turns out to do not even half of that distance, and loading to 80 % takes 1:30 hour.
    Some took it to court, Nissan saying nothing, settling only if you sign an NDA.

    Where the iD3 loses big time is the touch controls. It's just not functional in a car, too easy to accidentally press something you didn't want, no physical feedback where the buttons are. Seems like the future, until we have a bunch of people crashing while trying to set the AC temperature... Also, i really wish manufacturers would just ditch their horrible software altogether with the bad voice recognition and clunky UI, outdated satnav.

    The Leaf is now a very old design and there are lots of reasons I wouldn't ever consider one (it's looks, lack of a proper battery management system, and the fact that Europe is generally standardising on CCS for rapid charging). The ID3 is quite a good effort but still mighty expensive. I must admit I'm not that bothered about one pedal driving, I had a Zoe for three years and using the brakes provided lots of regen (the wheels never had brake dust on them). I have an ICE car again now and I quite like coasting on lift off rather than the car immediately braking. Personal choice I know.. Quite a faff queuing for petrol compared with home charging but I wanted a convertible and no EVs available in that configuration (plus I don't want to spend more than £20k on a car).

      @@Reddylion I didn't think I would but the price of new EVs made me think I could have some fun for less money so I bought Mercedes SLK (62 reg) for £11K. It will cost more to run but I don't think the price of EVs will be as solid as my Zoe was (lost £4200 in 40 months - mainly because I only paid £17800 new - £6200 discount plus the £4500 grant). I hate to say it but I never fell in love with the Zoe. My Merc would be better if it were electric though (even without the nice growl it makes). I was thinking a used Peugeot E 208 may be something to consider in a few years when they are more affordable (test drove one and loved it).

    Instead of driving around a closed circuit, how about trying them out on some proper British A and B roads? Then you’ll probably notice how the Leaf is skittish and nervous and the ID3 is too firmly sprung to be comfortable. Neither have the dynamics of the humble 20 year old Focus MK1 which is not progress in my book.
