Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. Five years ago, I decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

Christian Schaffer ----- You made Yosemite Park almost look like a "Lost World" that was located in some remote part of southern Alaska or Patagonia that few people ever get to visit, I almost felt like I was viewing it shortly after it was first visited by Non-Natives centuries ago. I have never been there, but it is always best if one lets a natural wonder "speak for itself" through the images that highly skilled people like yourself can capture, and you did exceptionally well as always.

Such a beautiful video. In 2000, I stood in Yosemite Valley calling my wife on a pay phone. I had no words for her until a passerby said to tell her “it’s God’s country.” It evoked the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotion more than anywhere I’ve been.

I remember Yosemite like it was yesterday - your NP's are truly the jewels in the US crown. For a guy who grew up in London/East London, the Yosemite Valley was the closest thing I'd see to Eden! I spent 7 days there in a tiny one-man tent at Camp 4, hiked every day, developed my love for photography there, spoke to the like-minded, reveled in stories and vowed to return. 16yrs on and I still think it'll happen one day. Never say never.

@@caraa.4944 The parks are owned by the public ... not a corporation with proprietary rights. This is a capitalistic society. Why shouldn't people be able to make incomes out of harmless actions like taking pictures in public spaces? They are not drilling for oil/gas or mining for minerals. Should we ban writers from writing about the national parks as well? These crazy upside down policies must go.

This was beautiful! Literally made me want to plan a trip to Yosemite. I had no idea how beautiful it was until I saw this. I never really thought to look. 💖
I think that is so messed up that they are saying that TH-camrs can't film national parks with our a permit. Its freaking nature that is open to the public. Y'all are not taking over the park to make a movie. It's no different than filming home videos.
Plus it gets exposure for the parks and inspires others to plan trips to go visit them. Free advertising for national parks! If anything the NP's should be sponsoring TH-camrs because y'all are promoting them to future customers.
They just want to collect money. I really can't stand some of the systems in this world. They make it so hard and even impossible for people to simply live and enjoy life.
People that are putting little clips of national parks, especially if the person is a Tax Paying US Citizen, in their lifestyle videos are not hurting a gosh darn person! They need to get their freaking hands out of people's pockets! 😤

It might be because I'm a soppy old bugger, but your footage of nature, the beauty of it and the way you film the changing light and weather always brings a tear to my eye - from the sheer amazement of how astonishing our world can be.
I'm from the UK and thankfully, there's no rulings or laws about filming in parks - that I know of - and frankly I am appalled that that law has been passed in the USA. Essentially it's a tax on our ability to enjoy nature. I can understand if there's a film crew of dozens of people making a documentary, but for solo travellers, or other regular people, it seems random and oppressive.
Keep making beautiful things, no matter what.

I especially love the low cloud portion of this video! They caress the peaks flowing at their own pace totally oblivious to time. In 1964, I was 12 years old. My family, left our home in New York , and spent that summer on a 9,000 mile odyssey around the country in the iconic station wagon, tent camping mostly. We visited 13 National Parks that summer. Yosemite was my favorite. Little did we realize at the time that 3 years later we would be living in Southern California. I've been to Yosemite many times since then, in all seasons. I've hiked and backpacked its trails. I've seen the Firefall from Glacier Point before it was halted in 1968. Drove through the famous Wawona Tunnel tree before it toppled over in 1969 after heavy snows. I ate my lunch on top of Half Dome long before it was necessary to win a lottery for the experience. Driven to Glacier Point on the 4th of July when the snow along the road was higher than my old Volkswagen camper bus. Every visit to Yosemite is a mixture of nostalgia and renewed spirit for me. It never gets old. I do tend to avoid summer season these days because of the crowds, but it's still my favorite National Park. Thank you for these wonderful videos. I really hope they can work out some arrangement to where you can continue to video in National Parks.

I could easily sit and watch an hour of your montages of clouds, mountains, wet roads and big sky. I feel the profundity you see in your films… even had an epiphany about how it mirrors the mind: the open clear awareness of sky, the moods sweeping across, their tendrils brushing the rich character of craggy outcrops… or forming from the actions of meteorology - personhood, emotion, the conscious.
Then after the enlightenment, the battery levels & trash! 😂
    I love your channel.

This was your most beautiful and moving creation yet, Christian. For the past few weeks, I've been preparing my moving home and tomorrow I begin another season of living much as you do, though a bit less classy. I've been wanting to write another book for children which involves the natural formations found across the county. This is going to be fun. Watch for my stealthy red SUV and perhaps a few videos coming soon...

Love your storytelling ability with how you use natural and artificial environments to create vibes that evoke various emotions. Those shots where you hold on a subject for a second or 3, really draws a person in. And it's the simple things we all take for granted that you highlight, such as leaves blowing in the breeze. Makes a person appreciate things in a different light. Raw beauty.
Would love to see you create a Baraka-like movie documentary. It's obvious that you have the technical skill and artistic sensitivity to achieve such a beautiful exploration of nature, culture and etc.
Hope your power needs get resolved soon.

I hate like hell to put pressure on you, but OMG I love it when you put out a new video. They’re just terrific !! I so have to get my wife to Yosemite, I must must MUST do it in the next year or two. So we just finished our first 3 month trip to the southern U.S. in our van (I built it out myself), and the trip was amazing. My wife is such a trooper, I don’t know how she could stand to be stuck in that van with me and the dog for that long. LOL ! We didn’t have a heater, so there were some chilly nights. Grab a 12v elec blanket off Amazon, they don’t draw much off the battery system and it helps. We stuffed it into a pillow case when not in use (I learned that trick from YOU and your coat/pillow). Very happy to see you post again, we thought of you and all the crazy west coast weather recently. We hoped you were okay. Sending good vibes out to you from Canada. Another amazing TH-cam post Christian, thank you !

I hiked across the Sierra's from Mammoth Lakes to Yosemite Village years ago. Thousand Island Lakes area with the sapphire blue skies and lakes along with the stone and glacier jutting peaks are enchanting. When we got to Yosemite Village it was crawling with people and had to camp in a perimeter zone. That night I woke up to the sound of heavy breathing as a bear was curiously sniffing our packs. It had it's cubs out on a branch going after our suspended food packs. We made a lot of noise and they snorted off. But an unforgettable trek.

Thousand Island Lakes is one place I’d love to return to. When I hiked through on the JMT, the mosquitos were biblical so we kept on moving 😅 That’s pretty wild about the bear cubs, what a scene to wake up to!

@@ChristianSchaffer Let's hope. Just watched Jeven Dovey's two videos on it and what I find that's crazy is how vague the NPS goes out of their way to word it. They say TH-cam and TikTok are included, but in the next sentence say "on websites, such as TH-cam and TikTok. The primary focus of the NPS, however, is on commercial filming that has the potential to impact park resources and visitors beyond what occurs from normal visitor use of park areas. "
So are they going to enforce it? I might have to weigh just taking the fine if they decide to go after me or if a viewer reports me.
I know that my videos have inspired countless people to visit National Parks because they tell me all the time I'm sure yours are even way bigger. It's wild because they should be giving us hugs for the amount of people we send to them. We're showing our audiences (you do a much better job than I do) of the beauty of these parks. We're like free advertising for them and for the country to bring in tourists. And if it's really about money... why not make the permit process all online with a simple payment? None of this makes any sense.
      Ok. I'm done ranting 😀

Discovered your video's just a few days ago, ... wow. Thank you not only for sharing but for creating these wonderful productions, with continuous moments of awe. Sound, scenes, film, text, authenticity. Van life - freedom in nature from a van with touches of personal authenticity as if we are your old neighbor. Beautiful. Used to live in Virginia and made long walks in Arlington, in DC, in the mountains of the Blue Ridge Valley, even runs and bike rides and drives. Moved to Amsterdam and recall just endlessly exploring the city on foot. Today: suburban family life, great too! The explorations were by no means like yours, but have also traveled the world. Freedom is such a gift. I discovered though that it is not just the exploration itself: it is a mindset no matter where or how you settle down. Once you have the mindset: you stay free! Success on the road (of life)!
