Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

      Hey Christian.
Another great vid. I commented recently on my love for a river/creek and a beautiful sunset , outweighing my need to be with people. The hermit in me. This video, you gave me all that. The little river, that waterfall wall, that entire park, with all the Autumn colours, was a zone I would be at complete peace in. And those sunsets. Bliss.
Thank you for once again, showing me such a beautiful world we live in.
      Cheers,
      Rob,Tasmania, Australia

    Hey Christian -
I’m a little late to the party but guitar…keep doing what you’re doing. Those moments when your brain checks out and the music just flows…that’s the magic. The more ya play, the more ya explore the instrument…the more those moments will come and the longer that will last.
Keep chasing da magic and keep posting these awesome vids. See ya on the road sometime.

I have to say, you're shot selection, choice of music, edits, the ability to hold on a shot and actually let it breath along with your storytelling... It's pretty amazing, no lie. You definitely won't see the parks nearly as much once you have a stationary home. We all fall into habits commensurate with our environment. However, you'll do stationary home life in a way that suits you, and there are many benefits to that dynamic you'll appreciate. And if you ever have the bug to hit the road, you can always venture out again (unless you have kids).

The guitar modes are what I call the keys to the universe. Still tricky to even find a full fretboard image with the mode shapes, but once I could pick up a guitar and play the modes up and down the neck with close to no mistakes in whatever progression then the purposefulness that comes through even with experimental tones is encouraging.

Loved this video. I completely understand that feeling of being in those special moments like that. While we didn’t live the van lifestyle we lived in a very small house and traveled frequently with our kids since we homeschooled and we were able to do so with my husbands job. But somewhere along the way my kids craved stability and land and animals so we settled down into a completely new area. However, our lifestyle now does not afford those same travel options but we live in the mountains so we have outdoor access at our fingers tips. Which I am extremely great for. But I miss traveling like we used too. Being able to stay somewhere longer if we wanted leave if we wanted to as well. And then come home to my bed and my kitchen. I think I was born a bit of a gypsy myself. All of this to say that it’s entirely possible to have a home and still travel depending on your lifestyle and I plan to do it again once we are out of this phase of life!!

“Happiness is only real when shared”. I've been alone in those beautiful national parks and wilderness for some time, and that's so true. It's hard to by happy when you are alone by yourself, no matter how beautiful the nature around you

I like watching your vlogs so much, you show such amazing places and these incredibly beautiful mountains that make me jealous from the Sudeten foothills (Poland) that I am not there, but with yours I can see these beautiful places. I am captivated by your calmness, but it is probably isolation from other people, when you can calm down from the daily race and be only with your thoughts. Great shots of nature. I'm waiting for each next episode. Good luck🍀

Stunning desert vistas, the colors and mist drifting across the mountains was beautiful. Always thought the desert was under appreciated for it's rugged landscape and quiet solitude. Thanks for featuring Zion when the crowds are absent.

An exceptional video, one worthy of watching multiple times. You capture the essence of why people like us live and travel full-time in Vans setup for off-road and off-grid living. I really appreciate your hard work and exceptional talent creating bteathtaking videos. Probably because l'm fortunate enough to be a VanLifer roaming around the same gorgeous areas you feature in your videos.
I love that you focus on the beauty of the venues you visit and the enjoyment in this VanLife style.
Thank you for NOT spending a lot of time on what we all know .. that there's the never-ending vehicle maintenance and repairs, and the laundromat and grocery stores runs, and the task of getting in and around the cities and down long roads to eventually get to those gorgeous destinations.
Thanks for the focus and storytelling on the pretty stuff. Its what makes us watch over and over.
Thanks again for another stunning video. I watch your videos over and over because they are so good !!

Hey Chris - that opening with "neighbors" answers your question. You've done a lot but getting back to a regular life is pretty good too. I'm lucky - I jet ski ride 5 minutes from my house, ride my bike on 60 mile trails, play pickleball a few times a week, and shop at Kroger, Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes, all within 15 min from my house. Nature calls me every few months and I take off, remote camping and adventures. The best of BOTH lives is the way to go, for sure. I'll do it till I die, and I'm 61 now!

Absolutely loved your filming of this incredible place! Interesting fact about the people who've made a home in the sewer tunnels of Vegas....NYC also has abandoned underground tunnels that formerly homeless people live in, there's a documentary about it. Amazing how hardy humans can be, and adaptable. But what a hard life. Thanks for bringing your beautiful art to us all

every time I look at you vlog, I can’t help think about OH’s like Adams, Georgia O and Karsh looking at what you do today, they’d be saying... what? we can go anywhere in this moving box, wash our hands, make a grilled cheese sandwich and a hot cup of tomato soup, listening to my favorite music... this is magic!
years from now the newbies will look at your channel with amazement on how free and adventurous you are. 😎
you are the “New guard” at a certain point in your career, you need to teach.
Karach said something very profound, if you have someone interesting as a subject, the rest is easy. ie: his portrait of Hemingway, Churchill, Bogart, Hitler, Josef Geobbles...

I traveled for about 8 years, just like you. It was mostly camping, hitchhiking, or cycling. And only in the last year, I had a minivan. By the fifth year, it seemed like I didn't want to hear anything about travel from other people anymore. I didn't feel like watching travel videos on TH-cam like I used to. And in the eighth year, I settled down in a house. For two years. I still didn't want to hear anything about travel. Sometimes I would go out into nature when I had the opportunity and enjoyed it because I missed it a lot. But after two years in the city, I felt a craving for travel. That's when I found you. Now I'm on the road again. But temporarily. It's more of a break from the city than a new phase of life. I envy you a little and your ability to live on the road, but just a little, because I know what you feel and what you want. I think all travelers who have experienced something similar share similar feelings. In reality, there are very few people like that. Few who can truly understand you. And I'm glad to see you because I think you're one of the few who could understand my stories, my feelings, and my thoughts.

I lived in a much less decked out van for a year, touring with a band. Alone in my van, thank god. Coleman stove, 6" screen antennae b&w tv, cooler. I learned cooler and stove tricks. Twin bed with real home bedding. I loved it! Not a forever home though. Had to sleep in illegal places etc. Rain on my cozy tight space was wonderful. I got into the groove. Kinda beats my apartment now.

Christian, as always, thank you for sharing your stories and travels with us. I truly believe you to be one of the most talented nature videographers alive today. In fact, I put you right up there with the likes of Ansel Adams (if he had gotten his hands of a video camera). I also travel quite a bit in a Ram Promaster class B van and love it. With my two dogs as company, I have logged 40k miles over the last 18 months. Perhaps we will cross paths someday! Thank you once again for your invaluable contributions and for being an inspiration to fellow travelers and nature enthusiasts alike.
