If you explain this show to somebody on the exterior it’s almost impossible to make it sound good. You just have to watch it. It is seriously the definition of deep
I recently went to a house show dressed as wilfred, a girl asked me if I was eeyore and I asked if she's watched Wilfred and me being drunk, explained "it's a guy who tried to commit suicide but fails and now sees a talking human dog." I think it's a darn tootin good explanation
Wilfred is one of those things I vividly remember every couple months but forget bc it seems like no one else knows about it. Such a beautiful and underrated show
This show definitely had a huge impact on me as a 18 year old, dealing with severe depression. I'm 25 now, and I still don't know what it all means, but fuck me it was a good ride.
Pretty much the same exact thing for me man. I was around 18 when I first watched the show and am 25 now. And was going through a very hard time as well. Probably the reason why it had such a big impact on me. The entire point of the show is overcoming adversity and personal struggles and fears so it really spoke to me at the time and still does. Thank you for the comment!
I'm 36 originally watched the show when airing right after my girlfriend committed suicide I also struggle with manic depression this show was always Prozac for me
I'm 28 but same and season one was my nineteenth birthday gift from her. It came out the year before on my 18th This show shaped the person I am in some crazy ways.
The show reveals itself and answers a lot of its own questions literally from the opening quote: "Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination." - Mark Twain
“I’m sad, Wilfred.” God, that moment hit hard. I cried. Wilfred broke his regular character and gave some actual love to Ryan when he really needed it.
Ya. I just recently rewatched it. And I AM really sad these days and that scene made me cry. It was like I identified with the art I was watching. It's when you're so sad you can't even tell anyone because they wouldn't get it. I felt it so much.
Ryan definitely also stalked a family for days until he learned their schedule, broke into their house while they weren't home so he could pretend Bruce lives there lmao
LOL, I'm starting to wonder if Bruce was actually just a neighborhood dog that Ryan used as an avatar for the character Bruce that he invented in his head, since Wilfred was also technically just his neighbors dog in the physical world. Maybe that house is actually where the dog lived. Especially considering the photos of Bruce with the family.
@@congratsbro. wait so was bruce real or what cause comin back to this video n seeing this comment i completely forgot about bruce and the ending really rewrites some of the show.
@@MrPokebozz i think the takeaway is that Bruce is as imaginary as Wilfred. He's a dog that Ryan imprints a character onto. So when Ryan sees Bruce's photo in the house, instead of seeing the dog, he sees bruce
When Wilfred says the pills worked, that doesn't necessarily mean they weren't placebos. I think it means the earnest suicide attempt gave Ryan the ego death he needed in order to grow. He was able to let go of being the lawyer's son and wake up the next day to discover himself.
Idk that sounds stretchy af, kind of shit your teacher says when analyzing the size of the authors anus. Occams razor suggests that he was fucking with Ryan, because he goes on to talk about an island and a smoke monster, joking about Lost.
I'm a schoolteacher and this Halloween I came dressed up as an "Australia Shepard" for our spirit day. A few of my coworkers have shown immaculate taste in recognizing my costume as Wilfred. Like many in the comments, this show came during a rough time in my life. Wish there were more shows written this well. Thank you for the excellent video!
I'm so hyped to see that this show has an audience. I binged it like 6 years ago and was completely in love with it. I need to go back and watch it again.
I was always surprised by how dark and existential the show would get sometimes, without ever becoming edgy. Well balanced with the raunchy humor. I think that's why I love this show so much.
Yeah I was confused by that too. Compared to stuff like Space Above And Beyond that only got 1 season before getting cancelled, 4 seasons is plenty good.
I don’t know the terms of it ending, but I felt due for some answers by season 4. If they had to hurry it up and tie a bow on it by FX, you couldn’t tell in my opinion. I know that happened in Bojack Horseman, but heady, philosophical shows that focus on things like growth and mental health can definitely have diminishing returns after awhile.
I always forget about wilfred for awhile and then when it comes back to me I start immediately reliving all of the show. What a great and underrated experience.
Damn, you cracked it. This show has stuck in my mind for years. Could never figure it out, but couldn't let it go either. It actually came to be an obsession with a menacing vibe, sort of like Wilfred himself. It'a a big relief to have some clarity now. Thank you!
God I remember watching this in college when I was depressed and loving it. It really helped me a lot and honestly is extremely underrated. I love that a lot of people were in the same place as me when they found this gem.
41:34 I went to the comic con panel for this in 2011, and they actually talked about this scene. They said they had to keep redoing it because Elijah Wood would take the axe, and hold it. The director said he couldn't do that because once he does, the ace becomes a real object, not just how he sees something.
WOW, that's actually really interesting. It proves that his fence was never damaged at all. That sets a pretty important precedent. It shows that a lot of what we saw could have been completely in his head.
This series was great, and Jason Gann plays the role of Wilfred INCREDIBLY. Highly recommend this to anybody who's looking for something funny / introspective.
I remember watching this showing and finding myself to be a bit too similair to Ryan. Had myself checked out by a shrink, learned that I'm not a schizophrenic, but am schizotypical/prone to psychosis and managed to get to a better point in my life.
@@adamlane6453 Aye, only done some very mild hasjish smoking when I was younger... as someone prone to hallucinations I never understood the appeal of actively trying to hallucinate
@@Langharig_Tuig marijuana didn't make me hallucinate after the first few times. and even that is really uncommon. when it comes to psychadelics, the hallucinations are different than what u would find with schizophrenic or psychotic disorders. it's just opening a part of ur brain that u usually aren't able to access, not just hallucinations. sometimes it has euphoric effects and makes music sound amazing, nature look so much more beautiful, the simplest thoughts can be hilarious, etc. if ur having a good trip. and u are pretty much always aware it's the drug causing it and its not real so it's different in that way too.
@@Langharig_Tuig it's not cause if hallucinations. It's because of paranoia. Schizophrenics are already predisposed to paranoia & adding pot on top of that typical sends things south quickly. Just like how psychs can often bring out things that are beneath the surface so if you know someone is severely depressed, psychs can actually accelerate their depression more than alleviate it.
The music is mixed a little loudly, but I'm glad to see someone else talk about it. I only watched it by myself years ago, and couldn't find it again as I was _sure_ Wilfred was played by Jim Jeffries. I really thought I'd imagined it, lol.
"Wilfred" was my very first "cry show". I was forever changed by it. I agree with the sentiment about being surprised over crying for a grown man in a dog costume. Thank you for this video. Sooooo satisfying!
the ending of this show was both bittersweet and ironic. coming to terms w/ the "fantasy" of a life that you pursue is often times exactly that and all that you have left is the truth of who you are and living with it. i wanted more for ryan but to see him smile and find some peace of mind moved me very deeply. this show was a masterpiece that i think only those who have truly endeavored through trauma/mental/emotional distress can appreciate.
The scene with him hugging his old dog made me cry so hard... and watching you mention it for like 5 seconds was enough to bring some tears again...god such a well done scene!
@Angry Pengu To be fair, the actual dog really seemed to love Ryan. He would go over and scratch on Ryan's door, even if Jenna and Drew hadn't directly asked him to dogsit.
This show honestly broadened my creative mind as a teen growing up in high school. It gave me the existential dread and push to be more creative and reflect upon art and the idea of what it means to be crazy in a world that sees you as normal or easily manipulated.
Wilfred is probably my favorite show. I didn’t see it until it was almost off the air. I’d see promos for and just thought it looked dumb. When I finally started watching it I loved it. That was a great commentary man, like really good! Nice job!
Thanks man! I felt the same way haha. First time I saw a clip from the show I was like uuuhhhhh WTF? lol. It is an amazing show and I'm glad I could share my thoughts with other fans of it. Thank you for watching man, really glad you liked it.
The trailers never did it justice. I remember thinking how stupid it looked when it was first coming out. But for whatever reason I watched it a few years ago and was instantly hooked. Truly a one-of-a-kind show. It's got it all. Its deeper, sillier, more heartfelt, and beautiful than any other show I can think of. You can tell this was Jason Gann's baby. He put so much heart into it and it shows.
I love this show. I'm Australian so I'm probably a bit biased but the American version was still awesome. I've smoked the nicest joint with Jason of the " Wilfred flowers " " barking bad". One of the nicest genuine guys I've met.
Robin Williams was a great comedian when i was a kid and i didnt get it when he started doing drama. But i realize now there was so much depth to so many of his roles and hes one of my favorite actors, for him to accept a temporary part like this on a television series must mean he believed in the script.
I like how this show used cameo’s to further the question of existence. Like blatantly mentioning Robin Williams or the casting choice of Rutger Hauer who played the leader replicant in blade runner... also Brad Dourif who played Chucky the doll. Long live Wilfred
Something very deep and dark..... It's impossible to not to think about this series.... Even after so many years this series kind of haunts me... I don't know whether it's just me or someone else too feels the same...
No no. Definitely a very dark and thought provoking show. I can't explain the amount of dread and fear I felt when I saw that statue of Wilfred for the first time. This show had more horror than most horror movies in the last 10 years.
Really excellent analysis of the show. I love the parallels drawn with Tyler Durden and Donnie Darko. The story arcs involving Amanda were always heartbreaking and never had an especially satisfying closing.
Hey thank you so much! Fight club and Donnie Darko are some of my favorite movies and I couldn't help but notice the similarities. There were even more movies I could have mentioned but left out for the sake of time. And I really wish the show could have ended with some sort of resolution between Ryan and Amanda but it may have lessened the impact of the final message of the show. I think that part of the message was that Ryan had to accept himself and deal with his issues instead of turning to some sort of distraction, Amanda included.
@@congratsbro. I’d be curious to know what other movies you are thinking of that follow similar themes (i.e. perspective of the deluded) as Fight Club, Donnie Darko and Wilfred. The only two I can think of offhand are Beautiful Mind and 6th Sense
Okay, but for real. This video is incredibly inspiring and it perfectly highlighted why the show was exactly what I needed when it was shown to me. Thank you for making this such an entertaining and digestible exploration. The last leg of the discussion had me in tears.

I watched season 1 of this show, lost interest (in my defense I was too young to understand it anyway), then completely forgot about its existence until I saw this video in my recommend feed. I can't believe I missed out on a psychological masterpiece. I'll be binging this series soon, all thanks to you.

I was going through it when I first watched Wilfred. I found a lot of my answers in laughter and tears from this show. The theme song was my phone ringtone and I remember having so many questions but was happy to be along for the ride. Thank you for the excellent breakdown!
This show saved my life. I feel very alone as a human but this show made me realise I didn’t feel completely alone. Thank you WILFRED you made me a happier person
I am a bit disappointed that Calvin & Hobbes never came up, because that is always what I thought was an obvious comparison. Also, Elijah Wood's performance in this is easily near, if not at, the top of his performances.
I take this comment personally. I was a massive Calvin and Hobbes fan as a kid and I'm incredibly disappointed in myself for neglecting to mention the obvious analogy to Bill Waterson's incredible work. I'm genuinely sorry for failing to include this in the video. Also, I consider this Elijah's best performance after that of Frodo.

I was very depressed in my teens, and this show ran from my sophomore year of high school to my first year of college. I would almost say Wilfred helped me work through my own sadness, so holds an important place for me
I literally began rewatching this for the umpteenth time last week. I usually go back to it in times of struggle or dismay, as a way to hopefully help myself. This felt like an existential comedy that was ahead of the curve. This show deserves WAY more love & glad you gave it some.
Dude! When I saw the model of the house I went straight to the like button... and i expected to see thousands of subscribers... great job on the video!

It's hard to find other people who relate to this show and to try to explain it to someone whose never seen it is very difficult.
I appreciate you making this video. Just finished the show for the first time. I always felt like Ryan was crazy. It gets even more insane when Ryan's talking to himself (wilfred) talking to himself (bear). Just shows how insane he really is. Great analysis on the basement. Never noticed you can literally see them walking in and out of the closet in a few scenes lol. Good show. Probably rewatch it now.
I appreciate the comment! I have a lot of things I plan on talking about in great detail, but its certainly hard to find a show like Wilfred. Especially one that hasn't been talked about a billion times already lol.
That was super entertaining (and you went hard on that cellar door). Never watched the show, and just sat through this entire analysis... and really enjoyed it. Well done man. As a minor note, I think the music could've been lowered a hair.

The pills being found to be placebos in Ryan's mind doesn't mean he didn't die. The revelation that they're placebos could also be a creation of his afterlife.
He also failed to mention he drank a whole bottle of real nyquil so that should’ve caused kidney failure but we see no long term consequences the sugar pills it’s self doesn’t begin to explain the suicide scene
@@Est-dh2go Well, even if a bottle ingested in one... sitting I guess you call it, could kill a person, it seems the bottle was half empty/full at the very least a quarter. I know my father, a heavier man than Ryan admittedly, can take down a whole bottle over the course of a day when he is rarely sick. That being said, it's not in one sitting. Unless you have pre-existing conditions or did so regularly I don't think it would kill you but as with all things it is ill advised to consume haphazardly. Stress can do horrible things to the body and I think Ryan had been stressed even before his time as a lawyer, so he could very well have issues in his organs that are/were unknown to him. I think many drug abusers looking for that particular sensation can down a bottle with no immediate issue. Based upon what I heard when I was in highschool. I never associated with those types myself and heard that info directly though.
This was my favorite show for four years. Im grateful that someone actually made a lengthy, comprehensive and loving video that is this well made for Wilfred. Ive watched it twice now
I love this show because I like all the theories attached to it on what is actually happening. I like the theory of him actually overdosing and the entire show is in his head and he is imagining it all while being super high, dying.

This was one of the weirdest, darkest, warmest, loving, bat shit crazy show that I'm happy to see got a much needed analysis. I loved this show and i loved you analysis of it.
I remember watching the first 2 seasons when they came out and loving it. Then my life changed and I forgot the show existed. I definitely thought Ryan was insane but this show's writing really keeps you guessing like no other show of the time or heck even decades later. Top notch job on the analysis, your hard work on this really shines through. I really appreciated how thorough you were on this, especially for a series that at it's core, is made to playfully mess with you and gently push you back into doubt as it tells you truths.
I'm so glad you made this video. It's good to know there are many others who absolutely loved this series. As an Australian, I got such a kick out of being represented in such an interesting, hilarious and thought-provoking show. I saw it years ago at this point, and need to re-watch it, and with your theories, it will be just as fresh as you said. Thanks for this again, great video!!

So glad TH-cam recommended this. I've had these same thoughts and interpretations of Wilfred for years and still think about it to this day. Such a good show
I think there are a lot of different meanings to the show. Its got layers. There is definitely an undeniable element of what you're saying. The creator of the show Jason Gann is an animal rights activist I believe. In interviews he often talks about the importance of capturing all of the mannerisms or "dogisms" of actual dogs in the show. The guy definitely loves dogs and its clear that a part of him just wanted to make a show about a guy and his dog solving life problems together.
Dogs don't love you. They were bred for thousands of years to show affection in exchange for comfort. Your ego applies human motivations to animals incapable of understanding how delusional you are.
I can confirm that Jason Gann (the creator of Wilfred) has seen this video and said, "That video was cool" LMAO

Man this show was such a ride. Ryan is such a relatable protagonist.
How do you think I felt watching it, lol. Felt like it was written for me.

@@MrDj232 maybe
@@MrDj232 well Raffi was asking for it. Deepest throat in the stuffed animal kingdom
When Wilfred says the pills worked, that doesn't necessarily mean they weren't placebos. I think it means the earnest suicide attempt gave Ryan the ego death he needed in order to grow. He was able to let go of being the lawyer's son and wake up the next day to discover himself.
Smoke monster!
“Lasted only 4 seasons” I mean 4 seasons isn’t bad
If it was longer it woulda degraded in quality
@@TheKnizzine agreed after 3 season most shows/series go to the shitter in my opinion
Most show get two season any more means it a success after 5 its a icon
I always forget about wilfred for awhile and then when it comes back to me I start immediately reliving all of the show. What a great and underrated experience.
Damn, you cracked it. This show has stuck in my mind for years. Could never figure it out, but couldn't let it go either. It actually came to be an obsession with a menacing vibe, sort of like Wilfred himself. It'a a big relief to have some clarity now. Thank you!
Oh I totally had some nightmares between seasons.
God I remember watching this in college when I was depressed and loving it. It really helped me a lot and honestly is extremely underrated. I love that a lot of people were in the same place as me when they found this gem.
Same! Depressed and in college 😂

I went to the comic con panel for this in 2011, and they actually talked about this scene.
@@congratsbro. im rewatching the show now after years it's interesting trying to imagine how a lot of these scenes really went down
That episode where you can see they walked in and out of the closet blew my mind. I remember seeing that and replaying and pausing it.
Yeah, everything started to click after that.

"Sanity and happiness is an impossible combination"
The very first thing we see on screen with this series literally sums up the whole show.
Best to avoid cannabis, unlike Ryan. Can cause very bad reactions in those with schizotypical traits.

I've always wanted to seek professional help but worry I will be locked up if I do lol

Yeah I just lost one of my dogs so that scene just murdered me.
This and the scene where the sheep dog Wilfred is laying dead I'm the vet
The episode where Wilfred died made me cry like crazy. So upset that it got taken off of Netflix
It’s on hulu
Not ashamed to say I cried hard the first time seeing that episode.
I find hilarious that Amanda got arrested as the actress who played is facing a fifteen year to life sentence for being a part of a sex cult
WOW, didnt know that. Holy hell thats insane.
She finally got sentenced to 3 years but yeah lol crazzzzyyy
I was wondering if that was her... Very interesting 🤯🤯
Robin Williams was a great comedian when i was a kid and i didnt get it when he started doing drama. But i realize now there was so much depth to so many of his roles and hes one of my favorite actors, for him to accept a temporary part like this on a television series must mean he believed in the script.
I remember the actress from smallville. I wasnt sure it was her because of hair color. But this was such a crazy story.
Been obsessed with this show for years and this is the first deep dive of it I have seen on youtube. Amazing video man.
Thank you man! Happy you found the video.
I like how this show used cameo’s to further the question of existence. Like blatantly mentioning Robin Williams or the casting choice of Rutger Hauer who played the leader replicant in blade runner... also Brad Dourif who played Chucky the doll. Long live Wilfred
After many many years I finally finished Wilfred today and this video was just what I needed.
That's fantastic man. Really happy I could add to the experience.
Had the exact same experience! I started the show in 2014 but didn't finish it until today. After this video I can finally put Wilfred to bed lol
I just watched a 55 minute video about a TV show I have never watched.
And thoroughly enjoyed it
Something very deep and dark.....
Absolutely same friend
