Deep is unironically the character I most sympathize with in the show. Sure he’s a pervy dick but beyond that he’s rly just a guy who wants more love from everyone and the only ones he got are his fish buddies that either end up chopped to bits, run over by a speeding truck, or shredded in the gut with a speedboat.
What’s fascinating is how capitalism and the corporations that thrive within it have ingrained capitalist realism (see: Mark Fisher) so deep in our society that they are comfortable airing stuff like The Boys. Anti-capitalism/military industrialism and social justice movements are all easily commodified at this point without any worry about revolution.
The only way revolution happens is if the powers that be whether guilds, military other elites take the side of the revolution. Look at the people's revolutions of the French or Russian, plenty of nobles joined the revolutionaries and many armies were mobilized in the years leading up to the revolutions because of other conflicts in the midst of economic stagnation. Then enough hungry people with guns realized the entire system had to come down.
@@ewanhoo good point. 4 biggest reasons for revolution is: 1. Extreme inequality 2. Economic downturn/inflation 3. Lack of social cohesion/extreme political divisions 4. Enviromental destruction
Rich! I'm a huge fan of the Preacher comics as well (they got me back into comics after a long absence) but I have to tell you the AMC show is the REAL DEAL. It may be the best adaptation from panel to screen ever made. I may be just another mentally maladjusted mutant RLM fan, but I really think season one (at the very least) is well worth a watch. Keep up the great work! You guys are by far my favorite channel on TH-cam.
1st season of Preacher is PHENOMENAL. The other seasons don’t have the same magic but have enough good moments that they’re still worth watching. I haven’t read the comic so maybe the comic is way better but I can’t believe RLM hasn’t at least watched the first season.
The Black Noir twist hinges on the Butcher/Homelander story and manipulating Homelander with the leaked photos. They altered the Butcher story so that no longer works, and show Homelander doesn't seem like he would actually be disturbed by seeing photos he can't remember being in, so now if they do go with the Black Noir reveal it won't have any shock value or relevance. My favorite scenes from the comics were the Butcher and Jack confrontation and the Black Noir reveal, neither which will work in the show, so that kinda sucks. Hope they can manage to come up with something as good.
They cast an African-American actor, Nathan Mitchell, as Black Noir, though you never see him unmasked in S1. If that isn’t an IMDB-fakeout, it’ll be hard to stay to the comic book.
yeah that realy is the comic bok about what could happen if superman turned bad and at the same time kinda explains why superman turned good althou superman isent in the comic
The comics were actually FAR FAR darker than the show. Karl Urban straight up said there's so much in the comic that couldn't be put on film at all it was so horrible.
i like it toned down tbh, i love the comic but much of it was edgy and dark for edgy and dark sake, no story motivation for a lot of it. with the show, every dark and fucked up thing felt like it was leading somewhere meaningful
I believe the comics were far superior. I know adaptations are supposed to be different but i was hoping for the darker edgier Ennis style of writing. It's what drew me to the series as opposed to the usual cape and tights stuff. But the Hughie-A-Train opening set a good tone.
I guess that goes along with the entire. There's the scene where they make fun of Translucent's name "It doesn't even mean invisible, it means semi-transparent"
This is a great show. I like the religious undertones, the juxtaposition of our expectation of good versus evil, and how society worships hierarchies (especially heroes). I hope this show continues for at least 5 seasons. I hope the writers keep it simple and don't regress towards the typical tropes associated with superheroes.
The author is from Northern Ireland, I've heard a lot of people pronounce it that way I wonder if it's because of his accent it sounds like a long E to American ears so we repeat it like that.
@@RossC667 He said it was the same writer (of the comics, Garth Ennis), which is why Preacher was brought up in the first place. And, for the record, I don't think it was the same team who adapted Preacher. Also, that Preacher adaptation kind'a blew. Missed the whole point of the comic series by turning his father into an abusive drunk.
Hyperion from Supreme Powers had his moments, but Mark Waid's Plutonian from Irredeemable / Incorruptible is the king of Bad Superman. *EDIT: also, Mother's Milk is basically a Good Person. Chaotic Good, sure, but Good.
Hyperion is never written to be "bad Superman". He's more like "what if Superman is from a broken home and raised by the military industrial complex". He's still naturally a good person but the mental baggage and good intentions for doing good but at any costs is the center of the character's plot. He's a Superman that is willing to cross the moral line to do good, unlike Plutonian or Homelander who are naturally a broken, morally bankrupt persons. Hyperion is more like an anti-hero, like The Punisher and Ghost Rider. Plutonian and Homelander are straight up villains.

I won't see either Captain America or Superman in the same way again, which is a good thing. I also thought they dealt with the 'Harvey Weinstein' part well. Really hoping next season will be a good as this one.

Haha, that ending cliffhanger!
Ah, just like The Fast and Furious franchise.
I kind of see that, though it makes sense. Eric Kripke's most notable work is Supernatural, a show completely centered on the bonds of family vs. life, destiny, pure evil, etc.

Its almost like capitalism is so successful that it can accommodate satire without being threatened
@@ewanhoo good point. 4 biggest reasons for revolution is:
1. Extreme inequality

I'm a huge fan of the Preacher comics as well (they got me back into comics after a long absence) but I have to tell you the AMC show is the REAL DEAL. oh you guys wait till you see season 2 you'll love black noir (if they go with the comic book story).
Hard to say what they're going to do with the material, they've already made several deviations from the comic story.
Especially the season finale.
The season finale sorta lead me to believe that Black Noir will be different from the comics
@@themanagement1535 Now. . . it's been like 12 hours since I watched the show ;-) , but wasn't it A-Trains leg that got broken? Not Black Noirs?
They cast an African-American actor, Nathan Mitchell, as Black Noir, though you never see him unmasked in S1. If that isn’t an IMDB-fakeout, it’ll be hard to stay to the comic book.
Highly recommend "Irredeemable" if you want a good take on Superman going nuts/evil super heroes.

@@Lexpionage Yeah, Ennis really needs someone to cut out the unnecessary stuff in his work.
