Gortner had a very fascinating but sad life. I'm glad he got away from his parents and turned his life around.

I watched this full documentary a couple days ago. What a fascinating story! I give Marjoe a lot of credit for opening up to the scam world of evangelical preachers. He might have done scummy things, but he was set up as a child to do them. I hope he's doing well today in his 80s. The saddest thing is that he was abused as a child in order to perform the way he did as a child. He wasn't allowed to live a regular childhood at all.

Crazy, I’m so old that I recognized Marjoe from movies and TV. Didn’t know he was a televangelist until the last decade or so. I grew up hating all preachers because they all just look like robbers.

The funny thing in this context is that Binaca had enough ethanol in it that it was possible to become mildly intoxicated from its excessive use, like the "bad" kids did in high school, circa 1970, and it was popular in certain circles. When word of this got out, Binaca was suddenly kept behind the counter and you had to ask for it in order to buy it. It was available in peppermint, spearmint and I seem to recall a cherry flavor/scent. I do not know if it is still made.

I saw this years ago, and also couldn’t believe how far under the radar his story flew. He’s awesome in spite of it all. As a pastor’s kid, I feel so much of what he says.

Marjoe was an absolutely adorable child with a clear flair for drama; it's simultaneously a natural thing and a horrifying thing to think "oh, this kid would be a great entertainer, get him in front of an audience!"

How gullible people were, back then. Sadly, it appears so many still are, today.
But this story is extremely fascinating. The sad part, though, is that he couldn't have had a normal childhood, and it probably affected him the rest of his life. But very intelligent person!

Bottom line: If you get people worked up enough, they will freely give you money, thinking they are 'worshipping god' while doing it. One of the biggest scams upon this world is religion.

I, unfortunately, lived a good chunk of my life in these types of beliefs. People 'slain in the spirit', preachers using 'preacher talk' to get the people riled up, all of it. The church I went to was a fairly large church. Not by mega-church standards of today, but large enough that they got Benny Hinn to show up. And it may have been about that time that I really started to question all the religion stuff. When Hinn touched people and they would fall back, that was somewhat expected. But then, there was a man walking up to Hinn, and on both sides of this man were two of the guys working with Hinn to 'catch the people being slain in the spirit', so they don't fall and hurt themselves, and on this occasion, the two helper guys ALSO fell over, as if they hurled themselves back. The audience loved it, and were probably buying it. Then, there was a moment when Hinn waved his hand out over a section of pews and the people fell back onto the seats as if 'slain'.
I have a loathing for these kinds of things, today. They steal from people and the people freely give it, because of how hyped up they have become. It's indoctrination and even brainwashing.

32:07 I was about 13 when I started speaking tongues. I had always been struck with doubt deep down but was also open to trying to receive whatever the hell they were talking about, it basically just takes getting worked up so emotionally that you can just shake enough and the gibberish begins lol my pastors rolled their R’s so I ended up kinda using that too. Such weird and unpleasant memories of begging to be touched by god and to hear his voice and shit. But, I could only ever hear my own voice

14:08 I know this better than anyone. I only smoke when I'm drunk and in a bad mood to relieve stress. When I'm sober I can't smoke because the smell is the most disgusting to me.

    I remember Marjoe very well.
I’m a couple years younger than he is, but he blew the lid off of phoney evangelism. As an ex JW, it amused me back in the day and solidified the phoniness of many religions EXCEPT for JWs. I was wrong.
I hope he comes on your channel! So many people fall for the scams. So sad.

I worked with my best friend & we were friends til he died 7 yrs ago.
My ex husband & i had a biz together for a decade - we broke up for other stuff. The biz was fine. I think it's do able IF people lay out written boundaries & act honestly in all ways. Never occurred to me to not do the above. Im autistic though too - i often don't know stuff others do.

Religion huh? Jesus Christ. Listening to him preach, and watching those followers “praise” Jesus triggers the absolute fu€k out of me. I was an Evangelical for almost forty years.

i also love this guy. he absolutely redeemed himself, which is not too imply that what he was doing under his mother's guidance was his fault. i don't remember if this doc says anything one way or the other, but i bet he did his share of psychedelics....
i always thought it was odd that he kept his childish curly hair even when advising the film crew to square up. it's a good point he makes though.

On smoking - I was out walking with friends when I caught a wiff and looked in the direction of the smoker, who was across 4 lanes of traffic + median and on the far side of a PetSmart parking lot. The smokers in the group stopped questioning non-smoker sensitivity after that (or at least when I was around).
On working with friends - Mostly agree. A friend and I have gone into business together, but we have complementary skill sets that don't require us to get on each other's nerves. Plus, we've almost reached our 40s. There is NO WAY our personalities would have allowed even this dynamic 10 years ago. 😅
