I was Pentecostal for 25 years and am now atheist. I know all this experience is real and I sure did feel it. I was unfortunate enough to have a chronic illness and after a while I stopped talking about it because I was told I was lacking faith. The frenzy is the addiction that keeps people coming back and they put the guilt of tithing on you (10% of your income even if you are in a desperate financial situation). Plus money for missionary and speaker. I am not a stupid person. When I started it was all love and lollipops. There was no clothing rules. No rules about smoking or drinking. No movies or TV rules. No music rules. That all comes slowly.....later.....gradually. and by the time you notice 3 years have passed and you've lost all your friends. Then 25. There was no choice. It was a cult. I left 5 years ago and still believed at first for about a year but the more I studied the less I believed. I have been an atheist for about 4 years I'll be 57 in March. I'd just like to add high heels......I mean "the higher the heels the closer to Jesus" high were pretty standard. A lot of Pentecostal men have foot fetish. It's what they are allowed to attracted to.
I've heard similar things from people who were converted; at the start it's lovebombing and "oh just come to church, that's what God wants" and then slowly "dress this way, spend your time this way, give more time and more money to the church" just frog in a boiling pot. It's so wheedlingly deceptive. Glad yo got out, sorry you were in for so long.
It is interesting how his followers embellished the cross trick to themselves. They said "the cross was over your head" I'm sure that is how they remember it.
Just to say I’m from New Zealand this stuff goes on everywhere and in the uk as well not as big no crazy 7000 plus mega churches but there are still churches doing this stuff
@Luke-cb5ge There are 2 million evangelicals out of 67.6 million people in the UK. In my experience, I think it's more gospel leaning African immigrants than white evangelicals here. We're a bit uptight for all this shrieking and stomping.
I recently listened to someone's explanation of speaking in tongues, from the perspective of someone who used to do it. It wasn't supposed to be an "angel language" nor was it supposed to be anything anyone would be able to interpret. The point was to blather at random along to the music, let absolutely anything flow out, anything to get in that state of mind where you feel closer to God/the holy spirit. Basically, it's more like a type of self hypnosis/meditative state... of sorts. I forgot where I heard this from, but it helped because I always thought the whole tongues thing was really bizarre and I never understood it until then.
Pilgrims started Congregational Church, Puritans start English Reform Church and there were splits from them and also more immigrants brought in various denominations. Churches like AME started, because segregation. Southern Baptists were pro-slavery, but other Baptists were not. As the saying goes, In America, if you don't like the church you in, then, start a new church.
I remember when it first came out, Marjoe movie got local fundie pastors hot under the collar. They told me that they are not like what was in the movie. I watched the movie. It was great documentary and Marjoe said he imitated Mick Jaggers moves while preaching and people did not get it. It is worth watching again.
Maybe not Pentecostal-level crazy - but religious grifters are everywhere. Even Catholic priests can go into that grift. In Poland it's most famously "Radio Maryja" but it's not the only one. Some priests used their contacts with the conservative (Christian-nationalist) former govt to get the money that was basically from the defraudation of public funds by officials.
It seems to me it would be more difficult for Catholic clergy. I know there are different orders such as Franciscans, Jesuits etc. but I thought once you take vows, you are stuck in that order, but I really don't know how churches operate.
@marymegrant9438 First not all preists are in orders and not all monks preists. Also - if something it makes them easier as they cover each other backs and hide stuff behind monastery walls.
Love this guys stuff he is amazing loved what this guy did Owen do ya think have you looked into the rhetoric for poilievre it covert af and I see very familiar patterns subtle but there another pair of eyes maybe with slot more experience its not so much religious but the political implications are devastating
After the Roman Empire left the UK area, the Catholic Church took over. It had a shift a couple hundred years later into Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and the Roman Catholic Church, which England and most European countries belonged to. K. Henry VIII started the Church of England, AKA the Anglican Church and in America, the Episcopalian Church. (IDK if the different names are bc of language weirdness or any idealogical stuff). That was about 100 years after Martin Luther in Germany did his thing. One person said that the reason America has the religious fundie nutcases it does is bc England sent all of the religious zealots off to America after they started colonizing it 😉
grew up in pentecostal church. there is so much to try to explain. i feel like only others who have escaped it would understand. a lot of this stuff makes me uncomfortable. it makes me angry to watch.
When did children play with religion it's like the children that you see right in front of you having a tea party. There's literally no one there. But the child actually thinks there is somebody or something there and they're sharing tea and imaginary tea with an imaginary person. You children playing with the things that you play with it's the same thing only you as you got a little bit older play with very very dangerous crap
we just want your money and for you to come back and give more... i always felt like the marjoe doc didn't resolve well. guess maybe he wanted to disappear.
If they are ok with their kids reading a story about daughters getting their father drunk and r@ping him, then I doubt anything will give them pause.
they conviantly forget that story
That story allowed thousands of men to rape their daughters while the wife called her own daughter fast. A disgusting religion of abusers.
I've never understood how people can be scammed by these charlatans and their shills.

It’s disturbing how many people are praying to nothing all being lied to by a man who is scamming them and pretending to heal them is sick

The Moonies were called that after their founder Sun Myung Moon. The church was The Unification Church.
And they own the Washington Times and owns every republican in congress. You should study that Owen!
That's good to know. Thank you
An offshoot of theirs, Rod of Iron Ministries, was still active in Texas the last time I checked.

Holy crap! It's the guy from Starcrash. Great episode of MST3K
Great popcorn flick and group watch! 😄
Yeah! I looked up his IMDB during the livestream and was like, Whoa!
I would love to sit and watch this documentary in a room with Greg Locke. Bet he would have a visceral reaction.

Its one of the oldest questions in the book , how do you find actors that don't make everyone feel like they want to kill themselves ?

In 1967, Gov. Reagan made acid illegal, wanting to crack down on hippies.
