Why (Almost) Every SG-1 Cast Member Was Written Out | Stargate Secrets

  • CAST CHANGES ARE INEVITABLE on a long-running franchise. As the years go by cast members decide to move on, retire, or quit due to conflict. Or, their character gets written out by the show's writers. But the show must go on.
STARGATE SG-1 was no exception, running for 10 years plus two direct-to-DVD movies. In each case the writers had to think creatively to write the character out of the show - and in a few cases to bring them back again later.
In fact, over its run every single member of the show’s original cast ended up written out at one time or another ... everyone, that is, except for ONE.

Losing Dr Frasier was super unpopular, but after all these years (and re-watches) I've actually come to admire the writing and emotional depths in that subplot. It was very sad and shocking, but that allowed for amazing dialog and 1-take performances with the other characters. If some redshirt got killed instead, none of the same unsettling emotions would have been elicited and it would have been much more forgettable. The fact that fans can NEVER forget that episode is a testament to its artistic nature.

These episodes at least used established storytelling techniques, like foreshadowing, to prime the audience. They deliberately concealed details by telling the story from the perspective of a highly judgmental journalist up until the last possible moment. It was very solid writing backed up by excellent performances.

@@ydna worth its salt? So a one off made the entire show? You are really going there?
If you center your show/work of literature around being 'realistic' in terms of random deaths, including the main cast, then that is an artistic and consistent choice.
A one off kill for shock value is not. It just makes future plot armor more apparent and reenforces this being an executive decision with the audience.
Just because lazy bad writing to be 'edgy' became a trend, doesn't mean I need to get used to it.

That is impressive how they managed to write out so many characters but leave openings for them to return. Giving Amanda Tapping that time off was very clever and was written well enough to help establish Mitchel as you see him get the band back together. The loss of Dr. Fraiser was pretty rough too, especially after finding out she and Tapping had a great friendship behind the scenes. And their tribute to Don Davis I thought was very nice. They did put in a small bit of dialog about General Hammond having died of a heart attack as well.

On Anderson: A key reason of his long on-and-off demise is, in fact, the bad state of his knees over time. If you pay close attention, you will even see that in some of the latter show's episodes, with O'Neill getting less and less action in the field and - at times - even gasping during physical activity. That would also eventually lead to getting him promoted to general - so as not to having to do all the heavy lifting for the SG-1 team.

From the team bantering in the beginning (Not "Wow, we found an ancient city" but "Wow, I won the bet") and Baldwin's lines about fatherhood (which I quoted to my brother in law). I only wish that Baldwin's team had had recurring roles.
Then there is the obnoxious video guy, trying to get access to everything when a few episodes earlier there was a terrorist team disguised as a camera team. And they even reference it. Meaning the writers paid attention to what they did.

We did get that fantastic episode(cant remmember the title), in which some renegade Asgard have taken the Attero device, which the Atlanteans have discovered by accident. It will destroy the Wraith, by preventing them from entering hyperspace, depriving them of interstaller travel, but will also destroy every stargate where ever they may be. Because a stargate exploding will result in a catastrophic explosion, millions, perhaps billions will be killed. Daniel and McKAY attempt to disarm the device, Daniel is desperate to prevent the holocaust, McKAY is too, but, seems more concerned with proffessional rivalry with Daniel, at one point, saying, "look, do you really think that you are cleverer than me? Just brilliant interplay between the two.

Amanda Tapping was never "written out". Maternity leave is something very different. You really can't say that Richard Dean Anderson was written out either. He kept coming back regularly, and even made appearances on Atlantis AND Universe. Actually, it is hard to find other SF series, where the cast stayed together as long and as much as they did on Stargate SG1.

This. All the Main SG1 cast made it to the end in some fashion. the title of this video is misleading and confusing. No one was written out. They were written away for time periods (Which is entirely realistic if you ask me, People have lives (In and out of universe)). The title of this video makes it sound like by the end the entire cast was different from the season 1. Which is not the case at all.

The bait-and-switch they did, hiding O'Neill during the whole episode so you would think he was the one who died, was the icing on the cake for a masterpiece episode. Dr. Frasier was a beloved member of the cast anyway, but the fact that we had just spent two hours preparing ourselves never to see Jack again, only to have someone else take the bullet made it that much more shocking, and drove home the episode's message that much more firmly.

That's awesome! I LOVE hearing about people discovering the franchise and becoming fans!
Once you get to the beginning of season 8 Stargate Atlantis starts running concurrently. You don't need to watch them in exactly the order they premiered-that would get really annoying switching back and forth between the two series when you're binge watching.
For the most part the two shows were kept separate and independent.
But there are things that happen on one series that play into an episode of the other.
There is a guide posted in several forums that explains the idea order to watch those episodes that maximize the number of each series that you can watch, only switching when needed to explain part of an episode.
      ENJOY!!!

    • @thegreenknight8423
      @thegreenknight8423 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nicoleowens2318 It's been awhile since I watched B5 but I think it ended fairly conclusively. The main story is mostly resolved by the end of the show. They tried to shore up some of the unresolved minor plotlines with a couple movies and a spin off but they are not nearly as good as the main show. Everything major is tied up nicely by the end.
Stop reading here to avoid very minor spoilers for the end....
It ends with a time skip and a happily ever after, so we are left to assume those minor plotlines were solved in the meantime. Which is for the best because I'm pretty sure the spin off show does end on a cliffhanger.

With regards to Janet based content, that was oviously never going to happen. Having said that, the relationship that many longed for(Sam and Jack), was never going to happen, but the one relationship that could have worked was Daniel and Janet. Daniel wasn't in the military, so there was no issue there, it would have led to more character develpment for Shanks, who knows?
