A very sad marker is the mass grave of the ten nuns who were killed in the 1900 storm at the beach side orphanage. It's located in Calvary Cemetery just off 61st Street. NJ Clayton and family are buried nearby to that one.

Were the children who the nuns tied to them buried with them?

I'm a historian and I love the Broadway Cemetery. Such a wonderful place to explore. I have no relatives down here, I was the one who took care of family back home. So going to visit the people in the cemeteries around here (I'm in Friendswood) is something I love to do. I know quite a bit of Galveston's history so I recognize names and such. One time I was down on the island and had my daughter-in-law with her 4 and 6 year old kids with me. I wanted to show them some of the graves and tell the stories I knew. When we got out, my grandson, the older child, said "nope, I don't want to go out there, the dead might get me." We're pretty into horror and Halloween in the family so this wasn't out of the blue for one of the kids. The younger, the girl, said "Well, I'm going, I want to see what's here." My grandson didn't want to seem afraid, and he stood up, and when he jumped out of the van, he said,, "My Darth Vader shirt will protect me." I still laugh at that, he was trying to be so brave. After that first time, I have taken them to cemeteries to explore the history. They're both in their 20s now and in college. My granddaughter saw a lamb on one of the graves and I was explaining to her about it. She said, "I think it's a kid like me, so sad she died." I didn't tell her that, she just figured it out on her own. I have such good memories of doing the cemetery trips with my grandkids. Great video as usual! Thanks.

Not morbid at all. My daughter and I love walking thru cemeteries when we visit other towns. Getting steps and learning about the people and local community before we'd have a small picnic.

An excellent video covering fascinating cemeteries! 👍
We are taught in Freemasony that a broken column symbolizes a life cut short. In our symbolism there is usually a winged angel weeping over the top of the column... 😢

I have been watching your videos and have learned so much about Galveston that I didn't know and I grew up there. Just shows how much we don't see that is in front of us. I had a funny event in that cemetery when I was on a field trip for a school history class. We were by one of the mausoleums and the door was cracked. We went to peek inside and the door opened and a man was standing there. It was one of the groundskeepers and that structure had lawnmowers inside. Not really funny at the time but I get a chuckle out of it now.

I always wondered why the mausoleums are so short. Riding down Broadway as a youngster in the '70s I recall there were a LOT more of those short little houses (perhaps four times as many). I guess with no one around to front big bucks on repairs after a storm the city has to demolish it and put the people in a hole.

Obelisks are an ancient shape of monument built for the pagan Egyptian god Ra. Obelisks originated in ancient Egypt around 2300 BCE, during the Old Kingdom period.
The shape of an obelisk is thought to symbolize a single ray of the sun...originally used as funerary monuments and were believed to attract the sun's rays, which would help resurrect the deceased. Romans started using them and dedicated them to their pagan gods. Originally called "tekhenu" in Egyptian, the work Obelisk means "pointed instrument" in Greek.

It's possible that these Victorians were misinformed about the true meaning or that they were pagans, possibly Freemasons.
