- Explore the history, mission and daily operations of Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 400,000 Americans. This revered place honors the dead and brings great meaning to the living.
This 2014 documentary from WETA features more than twenty interviews with Arlington National Cemetery staff, military personnel and family members of the fallen to create a powerful and poignant look at this 624-acre cemetery. Personal and historical accounts highlight the Cemetery's unique existence as a living monument to individuals and events in the nation’s history.
Beyond exploring well-known landmarks - including Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial; Tomb of the Unknowns; and the President John F. Kennedy Gravesite - the WETA production team takes viewers behind the scenes to meet the dedicated people who manage the cemetery’s complex daily operation and maintain its expansive grounds throughout the seasons. A comprehensive look at our nation’s most sacred final resting place, this local WETA production also covers the challenges of expansion for this active urban cemetery and the recent scandals of mismanagement and gravesite discrepancies.

I had the privilege of visiting a few years ago. It’s a very humbling experience, and makes me appreciate even further the service that these men and women gave their lives for. May they all rest in peace.

My parents are buried there. It is an honor they each qualified for. Due to the overcrowding my Mom decided to relinquish her spot and share with my Dad.
My great uncle Pvt. William Wright is buried there. The troop ship he was on, the SS Tuscania was sunk by the German u-boat UB-77 in World War 1
Thank you to all that served our great country. We owe you servicemen and women a debt we can never repay. God Bless You All!
God blessed you it is awesome place peaceful and Calmfull thanks for share🙏🙏
I'm an Australian citizen, and I have to say I'm always, always impressed by the dedication of the American people to honour their Army, Navy, Airforce and associated
service men and women. I love and so admire your traditions and special occasions which haven't diminished some for hundreds of years and many decades. I know there are some who think patriotism is a bad thing for people and countries, but I'm not one of them. I don't see why loving ones country could be considered a bad thing.
I think not loving your country is a bad thing. I feel privileged to have watched this moving video on the history of Arlington Cemetery. I've teared up a few times and felt pride. As an Australian, I salute your service people. I salute your traditions. I salute the American people. God Bless the United States of America 🇺🇸 & God Bless Australia 🇦🇺
My Grandfather is at Arlington, died 6/6/66, served in the Navy during WWI, I was 3 1/2 and have just 1 memory of him... I was sitting next to him on his front porch and he was feeding peanuts from his hand to a squirrel, and he wouldn't let feed it. I was fascinated by this amazing man..!! I have been to Arlington once, to show my respect for his life, his legacy & his service to our Country.
😢 Thank You For Your Service My Parents Sleep Here
I appreciate their service and sacrifice. My prayers to you.
Shared this particularly today when a candidate decided to make a sacred grave a photo op. This is not the families fault. It was done by someone who knew the rules and believed he was above them. That his staff felt so privilidge to shove around a woman official and call her hysterical by trying to enforce the rules. Perhaps there are Americans who have no truly embraced the hallowed ground of Arlington and all military cemeteries.
Sure, there are. Many of them are Confederate sympathizers . Many of them migrated throughout the US and carried the hateful ideology with them. 11:20
Hear, hear.
Beautiful topic for Memorial Day. Thank you.
Thank you for watching
I speak from personal experience when I say that being there truly takes your breath away to be standing amongst the rolling acres of Arlington! I have 5 family members that rest there! In addition to be a part of an organization in Civil Air Patrol, that each December lays wreaths on our country's most hallowed ground is a tremendous honor and great privilege!
I enjoyed this immensely! My ancestor William Christman was the first military person buried here.
Wow! Have you visited his gravesite?
My parents are both buried here in Section 52.
I had the privilege of going to Arlington last summer (Summer 2023). As said by others, its a very humbling experience. I read an extraordinary book about two years ago about the history of Arlington and how it came to be. It's well worth the read for anyone interested. Its called, "On Hallowed Ground: The Story of Arlington National Cemetery." by Robert M. Poole. For me, coming to the cemetery was a must.
Thank you for the men, women, and families who are serving or have served our nation! May God have mercy on America.
We like to remember our fallen heroes in the UK, but seeing how America treats their service people is truly humbling.
May all our soldiers rest easy, their sacrifices are what kept our world safe.
I believe every President should take the Oath of Office in Arlington.
No. The Oath is about the Constitution and THAT kind of service to the nation.
They are supposed to come twice a year for laying wreaths, but some times they are busy with the People's business. And that's OK because it's for the people.
But you're right, there should be some sort of way to make sure future presidents understand what all this means and that it's his/her job to protect this and always represent this best.
Thanks grandpa and Nana my grandparents are buried here
America’s respect the soldiers service who gave their lives for their country.
Salute to you all.
God bless the families who have sacrificed so much 💔
What a great tribute video to the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice Panda those who have served and passed away. God bless you all and thank you all who serve and their families
They gonna mention how the cemetery started during the civil war as an insult to Robert E Lee cause it was his land they seized early in the war? They always seem to forget to add that
But on another note, this place is awesome
Robert Lincoln, who served briefly in the Union Army in 1865, is buried there.
@@steveshapiro326 yeah this is true. Don't get me wrong. I respect and love the cemetery and what they do
Watch again It is in this presentation.
Calm down: Mrs Lee and her daughters had to flee and when they didn't pay their taxes during the war, the place was confiscated. And as a descendant of a Confederate family, that's what happened back then? My great grandfather had to buy back all the land the Yankees had confiscated after they hanged his father for crimes; he paid $.50 an acre and it took more than 10-15 years to buy it all back. If it could be confiscated from an old country doctor, with a big property, then the same was possible for Bob Lee, and he'd be the first to agree.
True, and that makes it mean even more. Land that was taken from a traitor and now actual heroes rest here. The irony is profound and kicks ass.
Heroes and Honors are the
residents of Arlington National Cemetery.
Both my dad's are here my real dad flew Clinton on air force one th3 whole 8 years. He also a war hero in Vietnam. My dad was in USAF 45 years.
Exceptional documentary. One part that was not covered: the headstones. Where are they quarried, cut, and lettered?
May our brave warriors who defended our country and their families rest in honor.
It's a great film. My brother is buried at Arlington.
While my Dad was not buried at Arlington, he was buried at Fort Sam Houston military cemetery as Retired Air Force Master Sergeant!! I took my sister to see his grave in 2016, it was my second time visiting his grave. I felt he was honored as he should have been, these cemeteries hold most of our nation's heroes!!!
When i hear taps being sounded I feel my heart break a bit. Thank you to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Remember James Lester Foster USMC. KIA Vietnam. From Roswell New Mexico. I was in elementary school when he died. He is the price we pay for freedom. I am eternally grateful ❤❤😢
Excellent documentary. Thank you to the countless and talented people who work so tirelessly to keep this sacred space beautiful and protected. I literally can’t stop crying, thank you for posting.
Not everyone in Arlington is from the US. I think I would have mentioned Sir John Dill. His service to the nation in WWII was invaluable.
Outstanding documentary.
Thanks for watching!
My great grand father valentine red is buried here in Arlington.
He was a Major in the U.S Army during WWII
Will be finally laying my father to rest on Nov. 6, 2024. We have been waiting since March 15, 2023 when he passed away. Family don’t wait for months, we wait for well over a year and a half.
Cathartic. I think this word was created to honor moments like these.
I've visited, and that's the word I do want to use ... I've visited those buried here, many times.
It's a peaceful setting. That belies the pain and sacrifice these brave men and women endured to protect our nation. But it is comforting to know that in some way, the peace is now a part of their ongoing existence, for they will never ... never, pass from memory.
Never ever bury any traitor in arlington cemetry,it would be the highest insult to our heros ,they fought to keep us free,to our vetrans here and those gone.thank you,god blesss you all ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏
Very good video. Thank you everyone for your service
I have visited Arlington and just thinking of it gives me chills.
Beautiful, heartfelt production. I wish there had been more time devoted to history.
Don't forget, these tombstones were the result of political decisions. We must be careful in voting for a commander in chief. Either way, these young people, like I once was, COULD be put in harms way. My heart aches for the GOLD STAR families in this video. I had an "easy" 4 yr Navy experience in peace time. Years later I found out some of my shipmates moved to other branches and are no longer with us. This is a great video. I teared up many times.
My Wife and saw Joe Louis Grave, because he is from Detroit, Michigan.
But this is so BEAUTIFUL! ❤
My Father is buried in a small graveyard, next to his third wife, under a twin headstone that I designed. Their graves are located outside of Donnelley, MN. When I see the rows of white headstones in Arlington, my minds eye focuses upon his black, gray, and white marker. I am proud of his service with two tours of Korea, and two of Vietnam. Arlington has so much meaning for everyone. It reminds us of the cost of protecting freedom and enduring peace.
My father's buried there and soon my mother'sits a sad but beautifully place.
Please help me understand how a certain person can call your loved ones who lay here, suckers and losers, and yet half of America voted/will vote, for him.
makes no sense whatsoever. brainwashed maybe?🤔🤔🤷🏽♀

I had the privilege to go there this year with my twin girls on the anniversary of DDay. Was very moving and an honor to visit. We did not get to go up to the house or visit JFKs grave seeing as the family was there at the time. I learned that my GPA could have been put to rest there but we kept him close to home next to GMA. He wasn't only a prisoner of war but he was given a few medals for his service.
A very moving location to visted.
There are several organizations that help veterans along their difficult journey when they return from service. My husband and I, in a small way, help one of these organizations. It is such an honor to do so.
It is amazing that that was once the home of Robert E Lee. And that the man that was in charge of bearing these soldiers made sure to mix up the graves. Because he said he was tired of states rights and that they were all Americans. " There is no government on earth that should be more paternal to its soldiers than the United States because it derives all its power from the great body of the people "
PBS may you live longhand prosper. What a decent, respectful, informative video. I could not stop watching. Thank you.
Thank you for watching
Good lord I cried like a baby and I'm a 31 year old man. Thank you everyone for your service!!!!
The first Decoration Day did not happen in Arlington Cemetery in 1868. The very first Decoration Day was at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, Mississippi in 1866.
This past Memorial Day, some insurgents tried to take a stone there. For the traitor that invaded the Capital. They were made to turn around before entering.
My cousin, James Ellison Glattly is buried there. RIP Hero. Died in B-26 bomber crash at McDill Airfield, Tampa Bay.
May They All Rest in Peace n Rise in Glory They Sacriface their Lives To Defend the USA RIP Soldiers n Heros
😭😭😭 My heart and soul goes out to all the families that have lost a loved for their service to our country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I truly appreciate their sacrifice for the freedoms I have today! I may not be able to console you due to your loss, but I truly appreciate their dedication to our country. My grandfather is a WW2 vet may he rest in peace as well, may it not be here but he is resting with all fallen veterans. Please, dear lord or whomever you may pray to, continue to try and protect and save as many of our men and women you can throughout the fighting our service members endure. I understand you keep them all safe but please do your best. In respects to all religions and cultures. Amen 🙏 🙏 🙏
Thank you to all of the men who walk this post to honor those fallen unknowns!
From Ireland here. When I visited a few months ago, I was very moved by visiting the cemetery. The expert tour guides who have a genuine passion to serving the cemetery with distinction. They beautifully illustrated that each grave stone is not just a marker, but was someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown solder was surreal, executed with precision. The sentinels who 24/7 guard the post, maintaining decorum and respect are the epitome of selfless military servants. I will truly never forget visiting here
i'am a us army veteran.78-86.i will alway's remember, my brother's.😢
I’ve seen a lot including the Taj Mahal but this tribute to the unknown soldier tops all I just know what else to say 😊
What more can one say of Arlington cemetery. Very beautifully presented. It was overwhelming at times but one simply has to take in such reverent history.

Impressive! Beautiful way and place to honour your heroes!
That shame nobody attending a burial at Arlington Cemetery.
My 2 grand uncles should have been buried in Arlington 1 served in the army one was a Marine
Wonderful video of ANC. MY father is buried there.
And i think it was sad when the staute of general robert e lee statues was taken down at this cemetery..
He give thid land to those who severed in the military
YOU GO CAV UNITS! 🇺🇸
God bless all the souls of these heroes that gave the ultimate sacrifice. ❤🙏
God Bless America's Elections
It must be a very 😢sad and hard job to buried the dead at any cemeteries
Thank you for sharing this great documentary with. I love this great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very powerful
I was here in the 1980s. I was maybe 12 years old at the most. And I got you experience a version of Washington DC and Arlington that you don't get to see now.
I mean I could walk right up to President Kennedy's grave I laid flowers on his grave I offered a prayer at his grave I did the same thing at Roberts and we saw the tomb of the unknowns and watch the ceremony.
My dad had to take my siblings elsewhere because they were too young to understand what it meant to be quiet and respectful in a place like this.
And Arlington House blew my mind. And it's amazing with doing family history to find out that I'm related to Robert e Lee and there's family members buried in the cemetery.
When my father’s remains were repatriated in 1985, we were given the option of burial at Arlington but we had already waited 19 years to have him come home.

Fantastic documentary. I've visited Arlington twice and I didn't want to leave. I could have roamed those beautiful green hills for several days and still wouldn't have been able to see everything I wanted to see. The men and women who work at Arlington have my deepest respect for ensuring the final resting place of our fallen is treated with the utmost respect and decorum. God bless.
My Grandfather, a WW II Vet, is buried here. That’s all he ever wanted, was to be laid to rest there, and he got his wish. He was a prisoner of war, and a Purple Heart recipient. Rest in Peace, Grandpa.
Rest in peace to all who are there. Thank you all, for your service.
There can be protesters that can be against the expansion, but the cemetery is going to do what they want, and tell the people in so many words to go to you know where. What will the cemetery do when they use all the available achers?
This was a beautiful documentary! I can't help it, but those two women being so negative about the expansion of the cemetery with environmental arguments jarred with me powerfully. One of them was very directive, as in "Don't do any more in ground burials". Who are they to deny burial to men and women who are giving their lives for us? Seriously? Besides, I can't imagine that such a serene place, populated by grass and trees and the remains of our service men and women, could harm the environment in any way. I do hope their views don't prevail.
May Every Fallrn Soul There , Rest in Peace 😔♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️,
Now i have a question, why do we treat the fallen, better than the veterans who, return alive, why are there homeless veterans and ill veterans that wait so long for medical care, don't receive it and end up dying before they get seen. There is a tomb stone the cemetery that says unknown, what makes those unknown more important that the one in the cemetery? The money to that is being put into those men marching back and forth, guarding those graves, invest in the black high fences that will protect that monument, and people can still view it, take pictures and not to touch it, and that money can be invested in your veterans that return and are still alive. Just a thought.
sorry for their loss❤
A lot of people may not know, but it used to be a working plantation with slaves before and during the civil war. General Lee used to live in that house that is now called Arlington house. It was in 1864 that the government took it over and turned into what is now Arlington national cemetery
My dad is buried there and soon to be my momq besides 🤔 this is great place but a sad place..it herons the hose who fought in tge war by serving this country to keep this country safe. My dad had 20years in the navy
Nothing more humbling than walking through Arlington and hearing taps echoing through the crisp fall air.
a lot of them that died, did not do join to fight in wars to gladly give up their lives for their country, they where drafted and was given a choice
What an operation. Very much appreciated 🇮🇴🇮🇴🇮🇴
The north seized Robert E Lee's planation to make it the national cemetery so Lee could never return to it.
I wish our elected officials received the same respect, honor and care as our military servicemen and veterans.
Thank you for this excellent, educational video
Excellent program. Thank you.
