  • The Railway Children was filmed at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in West Yorkshire. We have travelled to West Yorkshire and Oakworth Station where we walk in the footsteps of the Railway Children, take a ride on the steam train and visit many of the filming locations in the 1970 film The Railway Children based on E Nesbit's book.
Even if you are not familiar with the book or the film, a ride on the steam train stopping at stations from the Edwardian period and hearing the chug of the train will surely take you back a few hundred years.
If you want to do the Railway Children walk visit www.railwaychildrenwalk.co.uk/
It was a wonderful start to our Yorkshire travel series where we will visit many of the wonderful places, towns and villages Yorkshire has to offer and find out more about other literary figures, like the Bronte sisters and James Herriot.

We hope you enjoyed our trip down memory lane with the Railway Children and the fantastic Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Next week we head across the Yorkshire Dales for a drive to Grassington the backdrop to Darrowby in All Creatures Great and Small. There is however much more to this tiny town than that! Find out next week.

What a lovely video. I once watched a documentary about the volunteers who worked so hard to preserve this little gem of history. Some of them were cast as extras in the film playing station and railway staff. The station in the book was called by another name but they kept Oakworth for the film. The late great Bernard Cribbens made the character of Perks his own and made him memorable.

What a charming trip. I love all these little stations and the vibes of an ancient train trip. I was born in a village (in Poland) where there was a train line from our village to the nearest town, just twice a week and my mother used to take us to go shopping for clothes, toys, etc. Then it was like a big adventure. I remember to smell the air or put an ear to the rail to find out if the train was approaching. And suddenly there was this all noise it made when leaving from the forest. It was the present Kampinos National Park. The route still exists but as a tourist attraction.

I like the little German 4-wheeled Diesel railbus that they sometimes use for the first trains of the day.
Interesting that the branch survived for several years after the closure, in 1955, of the branch from which it diverged, and that therefore the short section of line from Keighley station to she site of the branch Junction is in fact a small surviving part of the main line. I grow station on the branch used to be Ingrow West, and Ingrow East on the main line was a short distance away. Shortly before reaching Ingrow from the North it is still possible to see the remains of a bridge abutment which carried the main line.

I lived just up from Ingrow station for the first 28 years of my life I'm too young to remember the filming of the Railway children, but remember Alan parker filmed parts of the Wall at Ingrow station they where paying 13 pounds a day for child extras which was a lot of money in 1981 they also had a big inflatable teacher suspended from a crane but I don't think that was used in the film, I also see some of my friends from school running along the platform in the film Yanks filmed at Keighley station and the old goods yard which is now where Sainsburys is in the town centre.

Stunning as always. Trains and slow train rides, small quaint stations, the chug-chug sound all bring so much joy. What a different kind of excursion you took this time. Nice. Will have to watch the movie next. Waiting to see the Dales in your next video. Loved the show All Things Great and Small.

The nice thing with this line is they let you hang out the window to get the shots. Many make you sit inside only for safety which I guess is understandable but you lose a dimension that way.

You cannot beat an old steam train where it is. I don’t think the railway children made it out of the U.K. which is a shame, a classic British film that is kind of timeless.

You've done Yorkshire proud ..My mum's brother's Teddy Rooke Ken Rooke,,Don Rooke ..Aunty Joan(Don's wife) and my cousin Mick Rooke their son all worked for the railway's ..I was very envious of my uncle Don living at several pretty railway cottage's over the course of his career being a rail clerk one of the job's perk's ..
