It’s refreshing that this is becoming a bigger conversation because it’s so mental! No matter what level, if you have become invested in this game your ego becomes a thing. Some are better at managing it. Expectations scream “Self 1” aka ego involvement.
Great discussion on nerves prior to the match. I am 67, an Indian lady tennis player with three ITF titles. Just last week, 1 March, 2024 I played a ladies singles match in my daughter's colony. There were only 3 of us and the other two were half my age. I always get tense before matches, but I prepared well ( My weekend tennis coaching for the duration of an hour each) helped too. After the match ( I won the Round Robin convincingly) I realized that age is no bar if one is fit. I run regularly to keep fit for tennis and for fitness in general. I recently won the bronze in the TCS Wold 10 k race with a timing of 1 hour 9 minutes.
LOL, I just played a 3.5 tournament match yesterday and I was telling my wife how I noticed that my heart rate was elevated in the first few games and it took me a while to calm down emotionally to get into a groove of playing. I even find that I will start to get mildly anxious a full day before a match. (Your video was posted just hours after I discussed this with my wife. Coincidence? Or did my iPhone or Alexa device prompt this video? 😆) Great content. It’s actually helpful to know that pretty much all players deal with anxiety before and during their matches. Learning to “snap” out of the cycle is the trick. For me, knowing that I did my best to prepare physically helps me calm down. Also, once I see my opponent hit the net a few times or double fault always elevates my spirit. Ha! They’re human, too! 🎾
Goodness! Super interesting and with a lot of important information to take from it. Watched it till the very end. Very interesting the section about the emotional and cognitive spheres and how they can "hijack" a player's mind. How to recognise that and how to "snap out of it" would be represent a major improvement in anybody's game. I will definitely work on that. Thank you, Alex and TTT!!! 🙏🫀🙏💛
Love this video! These are the aspects that truly make a difference when you’ve got the basics down. At Bollettieri’s we spent A LOT of time on the mental side and I learned a lot from your video, tak tak (thank you in Swedish )!
Thanks for the video. I watched the whole video and I don't know if I missed that part. But once the negativity creeps in, how do you snap out of it???
Not many people remember Johansson, which is a shame because he was a fantastic player. It’s no easy feat to take out Marat Safin to win Australian open. You also forgot to mention he beat a another world No.1 Russian player Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Do you work on your mental game as well as your physical and technical?
Yes.
I try to but my mental game is just incredibly weak

Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Well done 👏
Good video, I also find I play my best when there are zero expextsctions… quiet mind leads to loose body… leads to better tennis.
Thank you, nice interaction with Thomas, great player, great coach, better person!!
Many thanks 🙏
This is awesome just what my teenager needs 😊
Great conversation. Fascinating!

The background noise is very distracting...
