I'm only 11 so whenever me and my dad always go to Racine and Kenosha in Wisconsin to try to catch these fish. But I have seen the force of these fish and the salmon and trout that jump out of the water are at least 2 times the size of your first catch. This gets me a little scared when being on the boat marina docks but your videos have really helped me. I still have never caught a trout or salmon but I'm going out again this weekend. I'm heading to that spot with my boat next week. Chum salmon, once they enter the rivers, are usually best SMOKED, not eaten "fresh fillets". Did you find that to be the case?
Great video Ivo, I'm really happy that you decided to upload this video. Compared to the salmon we get here in Wisconsin, that's a small one. Chinooks get up to 20-30 pounds easily down here & will fight for over 30+ min easily, brown trout as well. Overall great video, spawn sacks work best.

Lol, I guide up here in BC, for rainbows, bulls, lakers, chinook and Kokanee. Your keeping a spawning chum lol?? Most ppl throw a bright silver chum back, oof
You seemed to get a good kick out of how hardy and energized these fish can be.. within 15 minutes of the location in this video you can use a float/drift setup and literally catch these chum all day long. I'm talking 50 fish days. It's a blast! I tend to run a 10-20lb 10'6" moderate fast rod so that you can horse them a bit.. otherwise some of these beasts never give up.. haha. It's not uncommon to catch a 20lb+ chum!
No problem! If you're ever around Vancouver in Oct or November and want to partake just shoot me a message. I'm no guide but I would be happy to show you some honey holes :). If you know what you're doing you can even catch a Coho, but they are far trickier ;).

Hi Derek - I believe on that day I was using 20 lb braided line (Thunderbraid)with a fluorocarbon leader. The rod was a 7 foot rod and the lure is just being finalized now and will be available as s new product next year :)
...good access point is close to Mission, at the mouth of the Stave River....here's the closest address which will get you in the area - you can park on the side of the highway - good luck :)

You just read my mind. I was wondering if you had taken it to eat. I'm completely new to fishing, I like the idea and the fact that you can get some fresh fish straight from the water. I don't know if its allowed in Britain to take fished fishes home, I was told by my dad that they only fished for sport and let them go free again. Which is what I see on TH-cam a lot. Getting off point here.... Did holding the fish from the gill cover prevent it from attacking? Or is that just the best way to grasp onto it? Thanks a lot for getting back to me by the way. I hope to go fishing one day. I was eating salmon steak and then searched Google for salmon fish, ended up going onto TH-cam to watch people fishing for them and this video was the result lol
Glad you are getting into fishing....you are going to love it as it is a great sport :) The reason I held the fish on the gill cover, was to ensure a good grip. When releasing fish, an alternative way to hold the fish is to grasp the area just in front of the tail fin with one hand, then put the other hand under the fishes neck area. You stated that you were using a barbless hook. One of the reasons we use barbless hooks is so you don't damage the fish when you release it. Another thing is, the hook has to be inside the mouth before you can keep it. When the hook comes into the fish from outside, as yours did, it is called snagging. A snagged fish has to be released. During spawning season the aim is to let fish get up stream to spawn. Snagging or flossing is not allowed. To catch a salmon, during spawning season, is hard as once they reach fresh water they quit eating. Your hook has to make them mad enough that they will bite it. A Russell Lure, or an FST work best. Bouncing off the bottom so the hook catches them in their bottom or running the line across the stream so that it goes across their open mouth (Flossing) is not acceptable.

You must be old school. Being the police. Read up on your regulations. Why don't you do that? Is freshwater regs different than saltwater when it comes to foul hooked fish? If you are not "intentionally" foul hooking fish then it's fine. Go read the regs. Salt water regulations clearly state this. You don't have to throw it back. Unless you quote fresh water regulations and they deem foul hooking differently, then I suggest you go police other people. Crying about a fish? A single fish? Really? What a travesty eh?

Thundermist Lures That may be correct, but you can only use ONE SINGLE barbless hook in any moving body of water in British Columbia. The Fraser River is included in that regulation. We all make mistakes, but please fully read and comprehend the rules and regulations before you fish in an new area. Good luck.

No Kyan, It's a Chum Salmon, you can keep all wild fish n the Fraser River that is not (a) Coho or (b) steelhead. He was aloud to keep that fish from that season, and the limit at the time was two. BUT, he was not able to use treble hooks.
Dispatch the fish first before you start blabbing away. Out here on the west coast you can get tossed in the river for putting your hands inside the gill plate.
please watch the video again and notice the fish in the water and the hook in the mouth...the fish is not foul hooked...when he flopped around in the net, the hook popped out very easily because the hook is barbless.
foul hook? didnt get a good look,,, either way you handle the fish like an ass hat. If you keep it then kill it. If you let it go then get it back in the water fast. Dont let it thrash on the rocks causing bruising or loss of sight

Please take a second look, just before the fish was landed and you'll see it is hooked right in the mouth - the hook I was using was barbless so once he was landed and started thrashing around, the hook got dislodged as it is very easy to do so, with totally barbless hooks

.....this salmon was still o.k. baked....once they turn more black in color, you are right....smoking is the way to go :)

That was one of our proto-types (the real deal is coming out next year) and I do believe it was in fact 1/2 oz (or 3/8 oz) - good fishing, :)
