Definitely. Just keep in mind that this particular fishery only happens once every two years. There are many other really cool fisheries to enjoy around here though. :)

Hi Vivian, Chilliwack River pink salmon population makes up one of the main components of the Fraser River pink salmon stock so you will see more and more pink salmon congregating throughout the entire Chilliwack/Vedder River throughout September. There is an episode coming out, probably next week, showing you how to catch them in rivers like where you were. Stay tuned.
The Tidal Fraser River pink salmon fishery is now closed for 2021. The next opening will be in September 2023. The spots can be found at: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html
I feel as fish move up river they dont fully bite sometimes but swipe at the bait. The are in between the big push and bringing in as much food as possible. I love days like these they make you want to come back again and again.
With the exception of coho salmon, I find that all the other Pacific salmon species only have one goal when in the Tidal Fraser River, to swim upstream as quickly as possible until they reach their natal streams. Pink salmon indeed would more readily grab a lure than other species, but they are easy to catch mostly because of their high abundance as they swim through the Fraser. At 500k fish moving through in 24 hours, you bound to get some bites. I think this season has shown people that they are not as easy to catch when abundance is thinner and water clarity is lower. You actually have to work hard to get those hits.
@@FishingwithRod I'm fishing from Garry point. Do you think its a little late in the run to be fishing so close to the mouth for pinks? Or is it still good?
The next five days or so are the peak of the run. How the fishing is at the mouth of the Fraser is usually the same as how it is in Mission because the entire Tidal Fraser is just a passage way which fish travel through in a day or two. One note, Garry Point Park is actually closed to salmon fishing right now because it is lumped into sub-area 29-9 which is closed to salmon fishing. This is an unintentional mistake and the zoning is going to be looked at this winter so it wouldn't happen again in two years from now. In the meantime, I know many have been fishing at Garry Point and even the officers checking are unsure about the regulations. I would avoid fishing it actually because the officers legally can fine people there for targeting salmon.
Berry's Bait and Tackle in Richmond, Pacific Angler in Vancouver, Highwater Tackle in North Vancouver, Sea Run Fly and Tackle in Coquitlam, and Fred's Custom Tackle in Abbotsford and Chilliwack are my five go-to stores.
Is it quite a short season for Salmon fishing ? in Scottish rivers it varies from 1st Feb to 15th of November .We only have Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout to fish for,and no fishing for them on a Sunday 😎
Hi Jim, for this particular fishery in the Tidal Fraser River, it is short because that's how long the fish are present in the system. The Tidal Fraser River is basically a highway for these fish, travelling from the ocean to the tributaries. They do not stop until they hit the natal streams. Run timing of pink salmon in the Tidal Fraser River usually begins around mid August and ends around the end of September. Peak of the run is usually around now. 500k fish are estimated to pass through daily around the first or second week of September. It is quite an amazing nature event! The pink salmon fisheries are extended across the province of course. You can catch them off the beaches on Vancouver Island and some areas near Vancouver, similar to what you'd do with beach fishing for sea trout in Europe.
Thanks Patrick. :) I don't think that's actually my end goal actually. I enjoy my platforms here, even though they are not huge, it's a tight-knit community which is helping our fisheries so it keeps me happy.
You have to! 😊 The pink salmon you catch in this stretch of the Fraser River are fresh from the ocean, very different to up there. Or come down to fish the Chilliwack/Vedder in the fall. 😊
Hi Rod really enjoy the videos as always. Just a quick question regarding waders. I’m about the same size as you are, and was wondering what brand and size of wader you wear. Thanks.
I have Simms G3 Guide waders, you can see a video of those at: th-cam.com/video/wRV1cvLT6f8/w-d-xo.html As for size, I can't really comment on that. You should pop into one of the stores and try them on until you find a pair that fits well on you. A lot of times the "right" sizes don't really translate to comfort until you put them on.
@@FishingwithRod Hi Rod, I have a pair of the G3 wader pants (medium short) bought three years ago, and the inseam was 28-30, these fit really well. I recently tried a pair of G4Z, also medium short, but the inseam has been changed to 29-32. The fit was not right for me as there were numerous folds in the legs due to the longer inseam. Simms unfortunately, do not offer custom option on the inseam. I was curious because your waders seem to fit you very well. Thanks for your input as always🙏
Hey Rick, I asked the Western Canada rep of Simms about this (he may hop on here to answer your question as well), he said it's strange because he doesn't believe the sizing has changed.
@@FishingwithRod Thanks for all your help Rodney! Even the guys at my local store commented on the fit not being right compared to my G3 pants. Thanks again for all your help, and no need to trouble your Simms rep.
Jeff, years ago we used to fish a couple of stretches just downstream from Alex Fraser Bridge on the Delta Side (along River Road). I don't know how the accesses are now so you'd have to drive along there to see what's still available.
Those spots tend to work better early in the season. I would go further upstream toward Langley, Aldergrove, Abbotsford this weekend if you are able to do so actually.
Awesome video Rod, I went down to Fraser river today and caught a pink which is my first salmon ever. Btw, how’s that G.Loomis, more sensitive than Shimano?
Perry, it has been a tough season compared to others. This was probably our best afternoon out of several outings. The following day we could not get a single bite. Water clarity is a big factor, and it has been poor this past week. These fish use the Tidal Fraser River as a passage way, so they do not stop once they enter it. Your chance of catching them depends on how often they can see the lure. The more fish there are, the clearer the water, the slower they travel, the more likely you are to catch one. Any lure would work really. Adjust your speed, do more casts, time your outing with the incoming tide, these would increase your chance of getting bites.
This page has an overview of this fishery so you should take a look, lots of info in it to digest: www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=44189.0 This video shows the setup you need: th-cam.com/video/KtYuhfx2QrQ/w-d-xo.html
In the canal there was hundreds going by every hour. Sadly you could literally put a marabou jig right in front of their face and they will just swim by like its not even there.
With the low and clear water conditions, that's to be expected. Keep drifting your jig, tiny spoon, bait, etc over them, eventually you'd get one snapping at your presentation.
@@FishingwithRod what would you recommend for float fishing? I got one on a corkie and wool opening day. but I've been getting a bit stuck with bait/lure options since then.
I was out fishing pinks on the Vedder today. First time ever fishing for salmon. I had Rod beside me fishing. So cool. I have watched a lot of your videos lately for pointers. 👍
Thank you so much for your informative videos on fishing here in BC! I am new to fishing and your videos helped me to make my first attempt. Regarding fishing for pink salmon, I have some confusions with the notices. For tidal water, the water area definition is "downstream edge of the CPR Bridge at Mission to the mouth" but I am not sure where this "downstream edge" is. As for non-tidal water, the definition is "from the downstream side of the CPR Bridge at Mission". Once again I am not sure the definition of this "downstream side". Could you clarify on this, please? I plan to go to Matsqui Trail Regional Park for fishing and I think it is the place you fished in this video. Do I need a tidal licence or a non-tidal licence with salmon stamps in order to fish and retain my catch?
The definitions of those boundaries are poorly written, so I'm not surprised that it is confusing to so many people. Basically, anywhere downstream from the CPR bridge in Abbotsford/Mission is the Tidal Fraser River. Anywhere upstream from that bridge is the Non-tidal Fraser River. If you are fishing in the tidal, like at Matsqui, then you need a tidal/saltwater fishing licence (and your salmon stamp if you want to keep fish). I would recommend that you fish the tidal, the fishing is much easier and the fish are fresher. Matsqui is a good place to start with, so is Glen Valley, Derby Reach. Locations are all explained on this page: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html Good luck!
@@FishingwithRod Thank for your explanation! The least thing I want is to go against fishing regulations. Another question I have is that if Matsqui is tidal water, would I not be allowed to fish there after Sep 18? Because I think Matsqui, Glen Valley, Derby Reach belong to subarea 29-13,-17,-16 and according to this website (www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s29-eng.html), the status of salmon fishing is closed.
You need a tidal/saltwater fishing licence to fish in the Tidal Fraser River, as well as the salmon conservation stamp for keeping pink salmon. All the Tidal Fraser River fishing spots I recommend are listed on this page: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html
We had an opening in 2019 too, but that opening began too late and majority of the fish had already moved through the system. In 2017 we had a total closure due to low returns. The last solid opening was in 2015.
@@FishingwithRod thanks, I did read something like that from your website but I only had a chance to try at the time it was low tide so I just went anyway. Always nice to be on the water. Thanks for all the content you put out! I have learned so much from your channel and website and it really is greatly appreciated.
Hey Rod, I was fishing at the end of 6rd on Sunday (no action, only saw 1 fish jump out the water in a span of 4 hours) and 5rd on Monday (fish were actively jumping through the 5 hours I fished but they were much further out away from the banks), 3 hours before high tide at 7pm but was not able to catch any pinks. Went to Brownsville bar on Tuesday again 3 hours before high tide to try my luck but to no avail, only one angler managed to hook onto a pink but lost it just before netting. I guess my question is, I have no clue what to feel for in terms of what a "bite" is, would be great if you can help me understand this a little more. I'm fishing with spoons and spinners and I also just started fishing within the last few months without very much success obviously haha. Still have lots of patience and enjoying it eventhough I've been getting skunked quite often 😂. Anyway love your channel, thanks for all the great advice and tips 🙇♂️ hope to see you on the river one of these days! Tight lines!
I have always found when fishing for pinks you will really notice a bite. They are not to different to fishing for chums in the sense they just chomp down on the spoon and hook themselves although a good hook set helps. This is my first season fishing for pinks but I’ve somehow been lucky enough to limit on every outing.
That South Arm can be tough! Some days, the fish want nothing except just going upstream. I've had many days when I could see hundreds of thousands of them swimming up the river, and couldn't care less about your spoons or spinners. I also have seen that at some point, one fish starts to bite, followed by another, etc. I know we don't have many days in this opening, but one thing I'd suggest is to focus on one particular spot to develop a pattern over time. The Tidal Fraser River is a passage way for these fish, which don't stop at any given time once they are in it. With that many fish swimming by, at some point you'd intercept one if you are just casting and retrieving at the same spot. The morning tide in the upcoming days should be excellent. The next five or six days are typically the peak period of the entire run. Good luck and see you out there!
Ok I just realized that I didn't really answer your question lol! So the bites. I find that pink salmon bites tend to be lighter than coho bites. They have a tendency to "nibble" or "nudge" behind the lure as you retrieve it. I often feel the very slight tug and rather than setting the hook, I often wait or slow down my retrieve just slightly, while expecting a harder strike. That's when I'd set the hook. For spinners, the bites felt on the rod are a little different. Often the tension of the line would loosen, because the blade would stop rotating when the fish pulls the spinner. The loosening is then followed by a tug.
@fishing with rod thank you very much for all the tips and tricks kind sir 👊 itll be my Friday at work tomorrow so I'll hit the waters again these next few days. Once more, many thanks 🙇♂️🙇♂️🙇♂️
@@FishingwithRod yeeees, so exhilarating to see the bites and reeling them in lol 😆 I went today to vedder and caught some finally too, hvn’t caught any in Fraser ~ I see you will have a vedder video soon too, can’t wait!
I'm switching up spoons all the time, but basically anything in that 1/4oz range, pink, chartreuse, orange works well. Water clarity has been poor, so keep rotating those lures to see what works best. I personally think any lure would catch them, but you do need to switch up from time to time based on water clarity, maximizing the chance of them seeing it.
Nice rod and reel, the Stradic's are by far my favorites. What I can't figure out is why are these high dollar rod builders still using conventional twist up reel seats? I find them both uncomfortable and they easily back off when casting. Where as a lot of lower priced and even budget rods have superior reel seats with a more secure locking design. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey Jason, I agree. I do prefer a higher end reel seat than the twist up option as it does come loose from time to time. I can only provide these feedbacks back to Shimano, but not sure if it actually influence the decisions on their designs. :)
hi not too long ago i went fishing at keith wilson bridge on right side you look of the edge in the middle and wow! so many fish i once saw what look like a school of 50 pinks! had no luck altho you might get some!
Yes. If you are under 16, you still need a saltwater fishing licence but it is free. If you want to keep salmon, you need to have the salmon stamp, which you have to pay for.

Any lure would work really. Adjust your speed, do more casts, time your outing with the incoming tide, these would increase your chance of getting bites.
Hey Rod I live in mission and looking for spots to fish and I am very new to the sport and would love some advice?
This page has an overview of this fishery so you should take a look, lots of info in it to digest:

This video shows the setup you need:
th-cam.com/video/KtYuhfx2QrQ/w-d-xo.html
In the canal there was hundreds going by every hour. Sadly you could literally put a marabou jig right in front of their face and they will just swim by like its not even there.
With the low and clear water conditions, that's to be expected. Keep drifting your jig, tiny spoon, bait, etc over them, eventually you'd get one snapping at your presentation.
@@FishingwithRod what would you recommend for float fishing? I got one on a corkie and wool opening day. but I've been getting a bit stuck with bait/lure options since then.
@@averagesalmonfishermanbc8807 Jigs, tiny spoons...
@@FishingwithRod alright. I'll give those a try. Thanks Rod
Never went to the Fraser, but was fishing the Vedder all day. Lost count at 10 catch and release! 5 on fly rest on rest on float and egg.
Nevermind the fishing, how about that weather today?
@@FishingwithRod Absolutely amazing weather. Doffed my waders and went in with just shorts and crocks!
@@afishingmagician We saw someone else doing that as well. Air temperature hit 29 by the time we were done fishing, we were cooking!
I was out fishing pinks on the Vedder today. First time ever fishing for salmon.
I had Rod beside me fishing.
So cool. I have watched a lot of your videos lately for pointers. 👍
Neil! That was a lot of fun for a couple of hours. 😄 Lots of fish around, the weather was pretty awesome too. See you down there again another day!
What time would be best tomorrow in regard to the tides?
Tomorrow (Friday Sept 10th), I would try the morning as the tide peaks around 10am (depending on which part of the Tidal Fraser River you're at).
@@FishingwithRod thanks for the help
Locations are all explained on this page: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html
Good luck!
After Sept 18th it is all closed in the Tidal Fraser. Non-tidal is open until the 21st.
Hi rod! Where is this place?
This is near the upper boundary of the Tidal Fraser River in Abbotsford/Mission.
Hello mr rod I’m just wondering where is that location and what kind of license do I need
You need a tidal/saltwater fishing licence to fish in the Tidal Fraser River, as well as the salmon conservation stamp for keeping pink salmon. All the Tidal Fraser River fishing spots I recommend are listed on this page:
www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html
@@FishingwithRod thank you sir for the quick response
So 10ft into the “Tidal” zone.
What about delta&Surrey?
Not sure if I totally understand what your question is.
Cool vid Rod . Question when was the last time we had a pink opening in the Fraser?
We had an opening in 2019 too, but that opening began too late and majority of the fish had already moved through the system. In 2017 we had a total closure due to low returns. The last solid opening was in 2015.
hi Rod, I learned a lot from your video, appreciate!!! May I know the fishing location in this video?
He's fishing just below the mission bridge
Thanks 😊
@@stuartmcritchie4560 thanks for your reply😊
Is Gary point park good
Garry Point Park can be very good, except it is closed to salmon fishing because it is part of sub-area 29-9.

Haven’t hook anything so far fishing from burnbay fraser shore park I’m not sure if its right spot to fish
I would try the Richmond side of North Arm if you get a chance to hop over there.
I tried there too today hour before low tide no luck
Did you try during incoming or high tide?
@@darkoreljic9457 Always the last three hours of the incoming tide and the first two hours of the outgoing.
@@FishingwithRod thanks, I did read something like that from your website but I only had a chance to try at the time it was low tide so I just went anyway. Always nice to be on the water. Thanks for all the content you put out! I have learned so much from your channel and website and it really is greatly appreciated.
Can you fish in Richmond for these pinks
Yes, if you go down there you should be able to see others fishing for them.
having trouble finding regulations on the tidal fraser for salmon, can you link it to me in a reply
First link on this page www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=44189.0
Watching this video makes me feel better because I have been hooking them but not always landing them. Even the pros lose some.
Not pros 😅 We all get schooled by fish from time to time.
Are the pinks still crome
In the tidal portion of the Fraser River? Sure they are.
@@FishingwithRod oh ok hay how is the vedder right know for pinks
Where is the exact location you are fishing? TIA!
These are the Tidal Fraser locations I recommend

Can you fish at dump bar
Today is the last day of the Tidal Fraser pink salmon opening. Dump bar is in the Tidal Fraser.
@@FishingwithRod so i can catch pinks there?
@@silascheng6004 No idea, there's only one way to find out.
We are in the same boat, I am still looking for my first pink but probably have to wait another 2 years.
Why do you splash your reel before fishing?
I had some sand on it. It wasn't some good luck ritual in case anyone is wondering. 😂
I'm jealous.
Get out there in the next week or so, fishing should be great.
aaa can’t wait 😛
Was it worth the wait...? 😅
@@FishingwithRod yeeees, so exhilarating to see the bites and reeling them in lol 😆 I went today to vedder and caught some finally too, hvn’t caught any in Fraser ~ I see you will have a vedder video soon too, can’t wait!
What spoon you using? Cuz I been fishing all day today and didn’t caught anything
@@FishingwithRod thank you so much😄
Nice rod and reel, the Stradic's are by far my favorites.
Better in Richmond and surrey imo
That was the trauma of losing a fish causing a flashback by escaping from the beach!
20 years ago I lost her first chinook salmon in the river when I attempted to tail it. That was the flashback... 😅
Do children need a salmon stamp for tidal Fraser?
Yes. If you are under 16, you still need a saltwater fishing licence but it is free. If you want to keep salmon, you need to have the salmon stamp, which you have to pay for.
@@FishingwithRod Do children need it in freshwater?
