When I started running, I always had problems with timing the jump in Topper's 2nd phase. So for anyone else struggling with it: Perform a small jump, as soon as his hat expands, before he hides under the hat.

Your formula of breaking the speedrun up into digestible chunks (by kingdom), showing us a good run, then showing the run again with commentary and pausing to go in-depth on certain tricks while showing alternate strats... It really raises the bar for speedrun guides. I appreciate this guide so much more now that I'm watching guides for other games.

Man I’ve never speed ran a game before and I’m 15 but man this game has intrigued me into the speed running genre and what more to do that is with a brand new 3d Mario game similar to the vein of Mario 64 and sunshine, sunshine being one of the first video games I’ve ever played and is a game that is near and dear in my heart and childhood times back in the day not having a memory card because I was like 5 or 6 years old and didn’t know that you could save your progress back then. This game gives me those childhood chills down my spine he first time I played this game and man when I got to the lake kingdom that’s when I really got pumped for playing a brand new 3d Mario game just like the feelings for playing Mario sunshine for the first time. But anyways these guide videos have really helped me so far and I’ve been practicing on the weekends :D I’m trying to figure out how I could really speedrun and get the right equipment for that on a TH-cam channel or something! I’m not into speed running at all but man this game has really caught my eye and I’m really into this game still to this day after launch when I played the game for the first time. I know this comment is wrong but I just wanna say thank you. Thank you for butting the effort and time to fully explain everything you have to accomplish and the different tricks that you can do to save time and just how to do the route as most informative and as easy to understand as much as possible. So thank you man for making my childhood come true and giving me determination with your guides to continue getting better and better at speedrunning the game.

i would recommend to only back flip on the chain chomp if you're beginning since its much easier and still saves some time

After about 2 years of temptation I have finally decided to join the super Mario odyssey speedrunning community. This very intriguing series of interesting move mechanics and faster movement options has taught me how to do very difficult maneuvers such as spin pounding and instant roll cancelling; has (as it has for many) convinced me to do the difficult choice of this decision.
I love watching people speedrun odyssey! It looks so cool!! And now I can become someone who Speedruns odyssey!!

For anyone having trouble with the madame broodal cap throw backflip strat, you can throw cappy between right and back-right. With this, you can backflip right onto the chomp without having to walk away. Much easier in my opinion

Mario controls marvellous in odyssey .There’s really nothing quite like it that I can think of. I think it’s called ‘skill ceiling ‘. The more I play the more I want to perfect my movement . Thanks this really hellped me get into speedruns
my first and second speedruns have been really fun for me, the first one having a time of 2 hours, 50 minutes, 5.33 seconds. the second one i did was 2 hours. 31 minutes, 13.39 seconds. with my first run i did pretty good considering i had a busted joycon that sometimes didn't allow me to go down, i was also playing through the game from memory of my casual play through. sometimes getting lost but i still go by every world without too much trouble, . i also didn't do the moon skip. then, after a few practice runs, i started my second run. (with a fixed joycon) i did what i did in the first speedrun but better, including the moon skip. im not that good at speed running anything, but super mario odyssey seems to be more friendly for speedrunning. i hope to get my personal best time to under 1 hour, 40 minutes. these videos help a lot
I did a run with the memory of my casual playground too! I did 2 of them, the first being 2:50 and the second 2:17 (I thought it was so bad that I didn't count the seconds xD) My last run, now with proper knowledge, is 1:33:44, I think...

Hi Smallant1. I’ve been commenting for almost a year now on how I would start to run this game soon. I randomly had the urge to try a couple of days ago, and on my first run I got a 1:55. I forgot the route since it’s been so long since I’ve watched these videos, time to relearn everything! Thank you :)

I randomly stumbled upon your speedrunning videos. I really don't know how... I don't watch much gaming. Over time the SMO videos really captured me for some reason (no pun intended), to the point where I bought a switch and started playing. I finished my first play through and am now learning to speed run it. After practicing the instructions in this video, I managed a 7:51 combined split for cap+cascade. The thrill of getting it all right (and still making tons of mistakes!) was awesome. Looking forward to following each of these videos and getting a whole run down soon. played my first mario game when I was 6. I'm 27 now. Glad I am recapturing this hobby!

So, random thing. I was randomly training myself on Dino skip and somehow GOT THE DINO STUCK ON ITS NECK ON THE MADAME BROODLE PLATFORM. which of course with it not meant to be colliding on its neck made it start shaking a lot and glitching. And I just needed to post this somewhere so I found a random vid with Dino skip in it and here we are
I am learning how to speed run this game (I’m 13) and this is a big help. I actually just got back into speed running this game and I got a few mins ago a 3hr 20 min run, but before I stopped speed running I would get about a 2hr 15min. I am doing 2-3 runs a day and I am currently working on shaving down. This was very helpful and I thank you. One last thing, do I have any sort of potential to get high up on the leaderboards?
(Update)- I learned the route showed in this series of videos today and I did a run straight after and got a 1:28:45

Important note! as of 2020 First Moon Skip IS POSSIBLE! Just look it up for more details, It's easy after some grinding and can really speed up a run if you can get it consistently. another thing to note is that some things may break after doing the first moon skip. The first is a softlock (In other words a state of game that will unable your ability to play! ) if you try getting the first moon after Madam Broodle boss fight, You'll soft lock and have to restart the game (Just one example of it breaking after first moon skip)
I LOVE learning about speedrunning but I suck at actually doing it, and I don't have the time (read: patience) to try and ACTUALLY get good or aim for any kind of record, but I've been looking into maybe speedrunning SMO for fun recently! Any% is a pretty short category as far as speedruns are concerned (and I don't have to do any jump rope or volleyball moons thank GOD), and the beginner route doesn't have any crazy glitches (fish clip and moon cave skip are actually pretty easy once you learn the movements!) So I know I'm 6 years late to this, but this seems like a fun thing to spend my time on and maybe get some PBs! :)
If you're close enough to topper, can you throw the hat, hold it to remove his hats, and hen just dive into his head to save some landing/jumping time?
I think maybe you could get the isolated moon in cascade first, then dive onto the next platform, then triple jump to get the dino, then continue. Maybe save a second or two I dunno.

I find attacking with the Dino makes the bounce on the trampoline more consistent

Got a time of 7:37 my first time for cap and cascade, time stopped at reaching the map screen, messed up dino and both boss fights but it's a start

i can get around 2: 40 on cap kingdom so far, but after many attempts at playing cascade im beginning to realize i need new controllers, ive had them for a long while and they have drift and the inputs dont work sometimes, which for casual play is okay but when trying to go fast and be consistent you really notice it. Im gonna buy a pro controller when i get paid and begin again. Perhaps ill keep all yall updated on my progress.
If i was you, i would buy new joycons. What i did is buyed new joycons and a pro controller, but buy what you like. Also nintendo repeirs joycons for free, you just need to send them i think to japan.
For my 2nd cascade run I got 4:25! I think it’s good for my second time

At 11:29 after turning around and backflipping, I always throw my cap in the opposite direction away from the cliff edge. How do I keep this from happening? Maybe my timing is wrong?
