Motown in the 60s really pushed that classier image and behavior with their artists. it is dearly missed now. i could say the same for most genres though, even Country music had a much more clean cut good down home country folk image in the 50s and 60s than the popular redneck image a lot of artists have today.

In the 90s the only UK acts I heard or saw at all was George Michael and the Chumbawumba hit, Spice Girls after 2000.... The record companies also destroyed all types of metal in the USA by 91/92... I think what we hear is decided by government and big business social engineering...

We, Americans, are snobs when it comes to British music. And when they came on the scene, we had New Edition, The Jets, Janet Jackson, so they were slept on. It's unfortunate, because they were a great group.

For me, I have always found British music to be a lot better than American in certain ways...I think that Europeans in general have more of an eclectic view and are more open to new things, where there is a rigidity in Americans. They are willing to embrace other cultures in a way that many Americans won't. I have more music in my own personal collection from British artists. Not to say that I don't enjoy American styles of music, but I love the way that Europeans are a little different and better at blending styles.
