As an 80s child who often visited my parents' native country of Vietnam, I saw TONS of these systems/compilations/modifications/add-ons. Storytime: my mind was blown as a SNES kid. On my Asia travels, they had a SNES add-on that was fed 3.5" floppys. I always wanted to bring these back to the US with me but was told customs wouldn't allow it. Now I know I should've brought ALL OF THE ADDONS with me.

Definitely should have bought whatever you wanted. Airport customs workers aren't inspecting passengers' videogames to determine if they're officially licensed or not. As long as you're not obviously trying to bring in a whole truckload of pirate games to resell. They're too busy looking for guns, bombs, drugs, and dangerous exotic animals hidden in people's suitcases.

You guys hit the nail right on the head! For youngsters living in poorer countries, these bootlegs were often the only viable and/or available option for gaming. While things have since improved, console (and PC) gaming is still a pricey hobby. That's why I won't knock mobile gaming too hard; poor people need to have fun like everyone else.

As a self-admitted FFVII zombie I must say that bootleg NES version of that was impressive. Bear in mind, as long as some key likenesses were used and a battle system like the FF series' was used the developers could have just thrown together whatever lame game they felt like. But instead it looks like the three-disc Playstation blockbuster was heavily researched, then carefully pared down and retrofitted into the best NES adaptation the developers could manage.
If FVII was legitimately remade nowadays by Square-Enix in a retro version using NES-era programming and sprites, I'd *LOVE* to have it. It would be so deliciously novel to see and play the most famous FF title, the first to be 3d, in that manner.

Here is a story I learnt that no one talks about:
So back in like in the mid 90s or so samsung a popular electronic company from south korea produced some bootleg copies of snes games but they did not do bootleg they officially released sega consoles in south korea due to a boycott that prevented japanese products from coming from south korea but this boycott ended around in uh 1998 or 2002 but nintendo sued them for piracy violation but samsung learned their lesson and destroyed all of the bit of bootleg snes game copies they had in their stock so nintendo teamed up with samsung to stop bootlegged games from coming in areas like eastern europe, south amercia and across asia and this is one of the extremely instances where a company is sued from making bootlegs but learnt their lesson and destroyed their bootlegged copies/games and helped with the company that sued them to stop other bootlegs sorry for that repeating I'm commenting this late at night.

I had one of those famiclones! In my country a real NES was too expensive bc we didn't yet have trading with countries like the US so imports were incredibly expensive yet Chinese products (which were contraband at the time) were really cheap! I loved my famiclone, it was identical to an original Famicom down to the Nintendo branding. The only thing that didn't work was the speaker on the 2nd controller.
People here didn't call it Nintendo or NES, they called it Family due to the prominent name on the machines and boxes. Even the original NES were called Family and some kids even thought the NES was *the* fake one 😂

If someone had an original NES or FAMICOM either these people's source of income was questionable or they were businessmen's kids. Not a lot of middle class people could afford the original NEX/ FAMICOM or even genuine cartridges.

Minions is an Adventure Island reskin. Which is already an official reskin of a hypothetical NES version of Wonder Boy.

There was a video game ban in China? I grew up there and I did not know that. I could swear that I saw playstation and xbox in video game stores back in 2000s. I really wanted them but I had to study and my family very likely could not afford them.

Minions is a hack of Adventure Island, a game that had 3 original versions released on the NES. They just changed the background and "boy" sprites. The fruits and etc remains the same.

I have one of those mini NES knockoffs. My wife "won" it for $12 online somewhere. It was actually worth the $12 shipping in my opinion though. Its loaded with over 600 8-bit games, some authentic like Blaster Master and Excite Bike and others generic clones of Super Mario and Ninja Turtles and stuff, but they're still fun. I didn't expect what I ended up getting.

Ha! My first console was due to my high grades in Elementary School. Dad promised me to buy a "Family Computer" if I could show him good grades and I did. The following Sunday, after church, we went to electronic shop and I could still remember tune 📺 TV's that plays demos of colorful Famicom games. The endless array of colorful game cartridges.
I was expecting the red and white Famicom console like I saw in my friends' house, but the sales lady said they ran out, so I ended up getting the gray Famiclone that I was hugging the whole time we were on the bus ride heading home.
On the of endless joy I was experiencing, we had Jollibee after shopping. I was the happiest kid.
Now, that I can afford to buy latest and greatest console(s), nothing can match the buying experience I had with the "bootleg" console. Buying another game console is not the same, let alone playing games.

I remember in Cebu in the Philippines my aunt bought my cousin a famicom, the weird thing is the famicom has detachable controllers and famicoms don't have detachable controllers. The famicom controller has two buttons which is a and b I think, and the controller on it has four buttons instead of just a and b

The Minions bootleg is a rom hack of Adventure Island. It was a platformer series by Hudson that was abandoned by the company after the two SNES games in the series didn't sell well enough. Sometimes a series just doesn't catch on, sad.

More likely 100x of original game if you were in Indonesia around late 1990s to early 2000s. No joke. The price of bootleg PS1 CD in 1999-2001 was IDR 5.000 while the price of original games could be IDR 500.000.
