The 120 mammoth tires are each taller then a man. The car itself is 18 feet tall, 18 feet wide, 450 feet long, armed with machine guns, a plow, a force of armed motorcycles, 35,000 hp, a top speed of 500 mph, and a distinctive roar that sends shivers down my spine. That's no car...it's a monster.
This episode still gives me the shivers.. Especially as the Mammoth Car over looks Lake Icy Chill after the Mach 5 goes over the edge and lands in the lake..
I’m in my late fifties now, and this song has lived with me ever since I was 7-8 years old. I watched every episode broadcasted on channel 52 in LA on a little 4” black and white TV. The song still gives me goosebumps thinking about the Mammoth Car!

Just randomly started humming this at work. Haven't actually heard it in years but I still remember it very clearly. Like 2 years ago though, a former coworker actually gave me that same VHS tape. Still haven't watched yet though lol
Thanks for identifying the time signature. I knew it was an odd number like 5/4, but could never figure it out, due to a lot of the percussion being sounded on the off beat. This has got to be one of the greatest themes ever, because of its complexity. Very creative composition.
One little detail I really dig is how the guys sitting in the Mammoth Car’s front seats at 0:19 makes it look like the Mammoth Car itself is giving a cold, angry glare, as if eyeing it’s next unfortunate victim…
"Listen you stoneheads I gave you a direct order to get rid of those kids. You couldn't even do a cinch job like that? What went wrong with it?" "Nothing, we knocked them into the lake, that's where they are." "OH YEAH? Look behind you and don't tell me they're ghosts!" (Mammoth Car copilot sees the Mach 5) "Huh? The Mach 5!"

@@klein2042 I mean canonically it is 10 cars long too big for the set, but the Mammoth Car and the Melange X3 made an appearance as some fanservice antagonists for 2 episodes in Speed Racer the Next Generation, episodes 8 and 9 complete with the original sound effects for both cars.
Blessed to have watched this in the 2000's on VHS. What an absolutely diabolical theme they made for this car. You can tell they were having fun in the studio when they were making it! It's super iconic, once you hear it and see the cartoon you'll remember it for life. The music makes me giggle, but you can also sense the terror and evil they were trying to express through it. Everybody keeps saying the Mammoth Car was the Ford Big Red, or the US Army Alaskan Overland Train, but they only get the multiple trailers thing down. If we're looking for a large armored vehicle with a boxy/tube look, and 4 main headlights, than I believe the Mammoth Car is actually the Soviet ZiL 167. It looked like a Frankenstein Lincoln Bus Truck thing, except it didn't pull trailers. Look it up. The Mammoth Car might be a modified soviet prototype with extra trailers.
It's really just a mostly custom car based on the Ford Big Red. The Mammoth car has a huge windshield, low ground clearence if compared to the 167, pointy front, wheels, bodywork and metal strips, all similar to the big red. It doesn't make sense for them to take the 167 as a base and the Big Red's profile is much more similar to the Mammoth car
@@ramp7857I looked at the Big Red footage again, and your right. It does appear to be more accurate. Probably doesn't help that earlier today I drew a ZiL 167 with Mammoth configurations and only realized that you were right until after I drew it... oops.

And the Melange was so no-nonsense too and had a great sound. There were so many good Speed episodes, and so many totally lame ones.

@Paul C It's difficult to say which one is better, especially since each evokes different emotions. This one reminds me somewhat of what the original Godzilla theme would had sounded like if they went faster with it. It's just such a domineering theme of power, and makes the Mammoth Car seems a LOT more menacing than it would had been with ordinary music. You know, this music is about power, while the original Godzilla theme (the one as he's stomping through the city) is about obliteration. While I'm at it, I'll fit in The Invaders theme as another great theme, which evokes very much an eerie sense of dread.

After the crazy supervillain Cumulus has had his plans to launch his own nuclear missiles foiled by Speed, he races away in his duplicate flying Mach 5 (see the episode to understand it, maybe), with a nuclear bomb in the car. And it's mostly gold. A wee bit more than 50000000 worth, methinks (even at $39 an ounce in 1968)!

My apologies if I've mentioned this before...but I swear, the music seems live it jives up better with the action in your video, than it does in the original!
oops..."like it jives up"...but y'all know what I meant! BTW, originally, the Mammoth Car's co-driver spit out a wad of chewing gum and it landed on the nose of the guy driving the little BMW Isetta-looking car, before they shoved it into the embankment. But, for some reason, that version seems lost these days.
Thanks dude!
