      I am not a martial artist or trained fighter. However a book written by a veteran of the SAS for a unarmed UK audience has absolutely helped me in real world situations here in the States.
      Some of the things his emphasized: An operative may leave a century alone, because netralizing him can create more trouble trouble than he's worth. In other words, avoidance can be a good defense.
      Accept that you will get hurt. By doing so, you can keep your head in the game even after taking a hit.
      Be ok with hurting someone else.

      @@jed-henrywitkowski6470 been trained since I was a young child in martial arts. I would caution you not to become too confident in the words written by someone who has been training at that level. A lot of times the application of knowledge requires things that can't be achieved by reading. It's easy to read "accept your going to get hurt, and be ok hurting others" it's a different story to take an uppercut to the gut so you can land a knee counter. Doing and reading are not the same. I realized this during knife training, you don't think about it but when you are cut (which will happen) the blood loss makes it hard to focus, the adrenaline can only do so much, you become sluggish and your reflexes slow. That makes you weak in a way only experience can explain. Just keep that in mind

    This is exactly the type of video I needed. I'm a 55 yo woman living in Los Angeles. I just bought a small folding Knife I can open with a quick finger flick. Was practicing grip and rapid access and needed to know where/how to stab for best effect. Got more than l expected from just this one video. You bet I will be intentionally stabbing, turning and two-handed slicing if I ever need to. Strength, size, grabbing, grappling, and Kung-Fu dancing weren't going to help me. I need to rely on surprise and targeted, intentional strikes to end an attack quickly. You may have already saved my life, but I'm subscribing for more. A couple of sidewalk sleepers tried to attack me two weeks ago at a bus stop, but being alert, I was able to deter them when they tried to surprise approach me rapidly twice. They did get on the bus and rode in the back, probably planning to get off where I did, but I stayed on the bus until they gave up and got off the bus. Now I have another level of protection. Thanks! ❤

      Good old California, I left there in 2008 from LA. Carry a gun daily in my current state. You should look at getting a fixed blade. Same reason why gun guys carry with one in the chamber. One less thing to do if you ever have to use it. No time wasted unfolding, etc. That's why Mike in this video has one. If you have watched this video and think you can use a knife to defend yourself against a serious assailant then my advice to you is to get rid of your knife immediately.
      You can't just watch a video that tells you where to stab someone and expect to be able to do it in a fight.
      I have been doing full contact martial arts for many years and there are still people who I can't hit at all even when we are going slow and gentle.

      In fact, most victims cant run away. Less space, old, problems with knees etc. This "run away" is only for young and well trained people. Or, do you run away and leave your girlfriend/wife there? No, thats why its important to stand against knifes. How? Training. Not these Taekwondo/Karate/Wing Chun/ Aikido Garbage, there are special Knife systems. Learn from Doorkeepers, not Black Belts. Second: Learn how to use a knife for yourself, so you will be at the same stage the attacker is, thats a 1-1 and not a Knife-Victim. And third, program yourself to do what is necessary, hurt the attacker well (no mercy, he try to KILL you!) and use real knifes in Training, no rubber or Toyknifes. There are many ways against armed attackers but sadly the "traditional Styles" will teach you knife playing. And most of all: Yes, you will cut and hurt in a fight against a knife, but in most cases you wont get killed. Esp when you have and can handle a knife, too. Thats a bad situation for your attacker too and maybe he wont try his luck...forget all your Dojo stuff.

      Beth - Especially with a true razor like knife. Twisting as you are inserting or removing triples the blood flow and inability to stop it.
      With a true razor for blade, the key is to insert the blade when they are coming forward. Their momentum added to yours goes to the bone. It also makes it harder to defend in court. "I didn't stab him. I put my blade foward between us in defense. He actually impaled himself on it."
      These blades looked very cheap to me. Sharp pointy things is what I would call them. They look cool but for actual cutting?!? I'd say no. Now a Cold Steel blade.... that's going to cut effortlessly until you actively try to stop the blade.

      These blades were the typical "tactical" fancy BS knives that all sorts of so called knife experts try to become rich from pushing on gullible fanboys.
      There are 13 in a dozen of these people.
      Trying to teach you fancy knife fighting while selling their products.
      The reality is that he made it way more cute and complicated than you should in such scenarios to make himself look good.
      If a person finds himself/herself in a situation where he/she needs to use a knife in self defense, he/she should NOT try to do this fancy nonsense.
      I also prefer a blade that is longer than the one they show and try to sell.
      A short blade like that can work in many scenarios, but it is far from optimal for many reasons.
      I do understand that people want a short blade because they think it is better to carry/conceal, but in my opinion is it very much possible to carry/conceal a knife with a longer blade than that and an inch or two longer blade can make a huge difference in how effective it is in many situations.
      Specially when you consider how obese many are or how buffed up by steroids and often aggressive as others are.
      I could teach people way better ways to do it, but I am neither eager to be on TH-cam nor am I trying to sell my overpriced "tactical" "crap".
      I am former military and have lived in the Philippines for multiple years and learned proper ways to use knives and not all the fancy BS we usually see in the US or on TH-cam about Filipino knife fighting where guys usually do and show the show type of knife Kali that in reality is VERY different from the Kali knife fighting learned for real knife fights where it is about kill or get killed and what the Filipino special forces learn.
      I have taught my now ex-wife and my two youngest kids that are now teenagers and any man stupid enough to molest my 15 year old daughter will be lucky if he only ends up in the ER.
      And you are totally correct about Cold Steel blades.
      Many of them are VERY good and specially if you take special care to make it even sharper if needed, you will not feel you are cutting anything unless you hit bone and the person being cut or stabbed will not feel anything much if anything at all.
      Personally I prefer double edged blades as they give you more options to how to use the blade if you need to.
      One of my favorite combat/fighting knives is a Cold Steel and that is the double edged Peace Keeper.
      I have more expensive knives than that, but the Peace Keeper from Cold Steel does everything you need from it VERY well.

    The last self defense use of a knife I witnessed was over in about 5 seconds for the defender. The attacker was dead less than 2 minutes later due to a penetrating and lacerating wound that severed the femoral artery. The fatal strike was exact and intentional. Three preliminary defensive strikes were less than fatal, partially disabling, and extremely traumatic. The attacker had five seconds to change his mind. Five seconds to stop and/or retreat before the fatal blow. He did not. The defender was on the floor facing a much larger attacker backed up by several accomplices who dispersed quickly. The action was found to be self defense and no charges were filed. The defense weapon was a Buck 110 carried openly in an OEM belt pouch. I was sitting at the bar when it happened not ten feet from me on the floor, next to the pool table, over an argument about a pool game.
    I am a doctor, a surgeon. There would be nothing, and was nothing, I could do to save a person from such a wound.
    The previous one I witnessed was not in the US, it was in the Third World. A homeless man walked out of a small neighborhood store after stealing something. The security guard followed and put a hand on the shoulder of the thief from behind. The thief drew a large kitchen knife, turned, and plunged it into the armpit under the arm that was on his shoulder. He withdrew the knife in an instant, but not straight out, and simply strolled away disappearing into the night. He twisted it and slashed, opening a large wound and severed the axillary artery. The security guard dropped almost immediately and was dead in less than two minutes. I saw it from the front door of the store as I had been inside shopping. I have to think the homeless man knew exactly what he was doing.
    If you open a major artery, and drop the blood pressure rapidly, brain perfusion decreases rapidly resulting in presyncope (dizziness), dropping you at least to your knees, then rapidly to full syncope (fainting, unconscious), flat out on the floor, then fibrillation of the heart rapidly ensues, circulatory collapse, and death. This can happen, and will happen, if you face someone that knows what they are doing with a knife. Even if you have a sidearm and shoot them, likely they will see you die before they die if you are lucky enough to place a fatal shot anywhere else but the brain or brainstem. That is likely the only shot that will prevent them from killing you faster with their knife than you kill them with your pistol.
    With the hands up the femoral and axillary arteries are wide open and inviting a blade attack that will disable and kill faster than most people think.
    As for the machete, there are parts of the world where machete battles are not uncommon in the street. Not uncommon to settle a matter involving a woman or a debt that way. They start slapping with the flat side and if one does not back down it progresses rapidly and brutally. Really a bloody mess. If you see it, you will not wish to see it again.

    One thing to consider: If you can carry a Kukri in a concealed fashion and draw it, then the other person is likely to be intimidated, as you instinctively know that this thing literally disarms people and opens skulls. >but why would more people survive gun encounters than knife encounters?
      Because you usually only have to shoot someone once and they're down. Even if they could still fight, they won't because they know you've got a gun. If you're using a knife on someone, you're probably attacking them with it over and over. A knife is also less immediately painful, allowing someone to keep fighting without knowing they've been dealt a fatal blow. A gun has much more stopping power. It causes searing pain due to the heat of projectile, crushes its way through bones, and tears through flesh as opposed to a much more "clean" slice or stab wound.

      If you are carrying a firearm, there's the 21 foot rule - if an attacker gets to 21 feet, he can easily be upon you and grab your gun before you can shoot; some self defense instructors teach students to shoot an unarmed attacker at 21 feet if they continue to advance on you. Their plan is to take your gun from you and use it to kill you. If you are carrying a knife for self defense, you do not have that option.
      If you draw your knife, hopefully the attacker will start to see things your way and will break off the attack. If he doesn't, it may well turn into a wrestling match for possession of the knife. If that happens, the techniques being taught in the video can save your life if you can successfully bring them to bear upon your attacker.
      This video shows that a short bladed knife can be much more effective in an attack that turns into a hands on wrestling match; a longer knife - say, a 6 to 8 inch blade - will be unwieldy in a CQB scenario.
      This and other defensive knife use videos have opened my eyes to the value of a short to medium fixed blade knife - 3.75 to 5 inches - in blade length. Yes, locking folders can be used, but it takes valuable seconds to get the knife out and open it. Those lost seconds are an advantage to your attacker. With a fixed blade knife, you can draw it in less than a second with practice and you are ready to defend.

Like a person broke into your house or someone attacking children kind of horrible. This shouldn't be used on normal people who are just angry. These actions will mostly end with murder and you better be able to justify what you've done. The law will really come after you if you used excessive force like this for no good reason.

    I must say that god damn it was satisfying seeing you (mike) flinch and bring your hands up when you were eye gouged, because for years I have been commenting on your videos that this is the purpose of the eye gouges that you have been saying don't work in self defense. It's not a fight ender, it's an extremely effective distraction as you probably felt. The value of the 1/10 second window and the forward momentum that the eye gouge brings cannot be overstated. It's also such a good go-to-move to allow yourself to regain composure, balance and direction in a surprise attack. Also, the eye gouge is done like this guy shows, it's not some punch where you try to "hit the eye" of a moving target. You grab, push and drive forward. It doesn't even matter if you miss the eye, just the discomfort of getting your face violently grabbed and your head pushed backwards is enough to get a desired reaction.

"Superficial" slashes on the back of the hand,top of the thumb,or across the biceps has the same effect and allows for a much better flow into subsequent motions. Had he succeeded in getting the blade open my only option at that point would have been to tender my resignation with my employer and RUN LIKE HELL. Never try to fight someone with a knife if you're unarmed because you will definitely lose. There are no realistic knife blocking techniques that work like they do in Steven Seagal movies; if you even survive the encounter there's a good chance you'll never be the same again. Completely and utterly wrong.
      You have grossly underestimated the difficulty of using a knife and grossly overestimated its effectiveness.
      First of all actually hitting someone is hard and it get exponentially harder if that person has any skill. This means it would be impossible for me to " just stick the knife in anywhere"
      Secondly during a fight even the simplest action becomes very very difficult to take to perform which means something as complex as "twist and turn, push and pull across meaty parts" would also be impossible - if this was not true every single stabbing would be like that but that is not the case, most stab wounds are clearly a single wound channel where the knife went in and came out again, occasionally you get variations caused by the victims movement such as L shape wounds but this has nothing to do with the attackers ability.
      Finally even if it was possible for me to do what you suggest the attacker is unlikely to bleed out, studies have repeatedly shown that the vast majority of knife wounds are minor and very very few are fatal.
      If I took your advice and tried to use a knife to defend myself against any person who is used to fighting and violence and tried to "just stick it in" that person would make me drop the knife and have his away with me and walk away unharmed - that is a 100% certainty.
      But even if by some miracle I did manage to "just stick it in" - so what? people don't just stop when they get stabbed the other guy would just overpower me and do what he wants with me in the next instant anyway.
      Comments like your risk giving people who dont know what they are doing confidence that they should not have!

    Hi . A few things: 1 the Knife. While the most important thing in a SD situation with a knife is access (well addressed here) the runner up is the handle. I have found that a handle that doesn't fill your hand is a really bad idea for any knife ,for any use. 2 The technique-. If you go with both hands to the face you will quickly get an elbow from a newbie KM , Muy Tai ,.. You will be taken down by any Wrestler and a Kali guy guy would have stabbed you or gotten your back(wrestler too). (are others but these I studied) .3. Legal- Icy Mike from your time in the Police , please tell us what would happen if a guy tore out the Femoral artery of an unarmed opponent , using a "fighting knife" as shown here. I can just see the smile on the prosecutors face. Please feel free to correct me. Mordi.

    in every fight I've been in, not once has anyone straight arm grabbed my shirt where I could pull off a nifty self defense trick :(

  • @nightshade7240
    @nightshade7240 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    A knife isn't a self defense tool. That's just the reality in most of the western world and our legal system. It's really difficult to establish self defense with a knife, especially if the attacker was unarmed. Especially if you are trained and use principles of bio-mechanical cutting and demonstrate that level of skill. Most people are terrified of edged weapons with good reason. Watching your responses to being shown where to put the knife and how was testament to that.
    I moulinet my blades for practical purpose (that hand spin you like so much but the way I was taught is that you control it more and the motion is about generating tip speed).

    • @andrewkelly3520
      @andrewkelly3520 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exactly this. Any police officer will tell you that pulling a knife is classed as lethal intent and carte blanche for the police officer to use lethal force. It is hard to imagine a scenario where using an edged weapon as a force multiplier would be justified. The odds of it actually happening are significantly lower than becoming a victim of depression and suicide, especially as a young male. I don't know about America, but in most of Europe, there is just no need to carry a blade. The biggest risk to me personally, might, and it is a very slim might, would be dogs, a potential dog attack while out walking, but even the odds of that are super low.

      Right. In germany a student was judged for more than 3 yrs in Jail bec he used a Knife in self defense against 5 (!) unarmed attackers...the attackers walked out of the court laughing and as free people. If you can fight as Self defense with a knife you can learn to fight without weapons against empty hand, too. Thats not magic.

    • @drhkleinert8241
      @drhkleinert8241 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ach, second: If you cand use a knife you can use a metal traing knife (without blade or spit) as a SD Tool, like a Kubotan. It will scares the opponent, hurts like hell but cant make lethal wounds, and in court no judge will notice that as a dangerous weapon.

    Here's the rub. If you are using a knife in a self defence scenario, you need to stop the attacker ASAP because it's lethal encounter. You stab to the neck, the chest (heart, lung area) or you go for radial or femoral artery. Trying to justify butchering your attacker in court is going to go very badly for you. Everyone wants to be John Wick when, in reality, you use a knife like in a prison yard. You either slash like hell to create distance and forget the damage or you stab like a sewing machine on steroids

      That's exactly what I'm thinking. The groin cut that the guy teaches is literally going to get the other person dead in less that a minute after you cut him. I know some self defense scenarios are either kill or be killed, but if you over do it, it won't make it easy for you in court...

    • @petronela910
      @petronela910 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@astroman0500 that's precisely it. A knife is a lethal weapon, whether you have it or he has it. Once it's produced any encounter is life or death
