Hello. I'm interested in your flower painting course. How many paintings do you teach in this course and do you show the color palette with explanation of each color as you add paint to the canvas? Looking forward hearing from you. Thank you.
@@veronical3135 hi Veronica! Thank you so much for contacting me. The course consists of approximately 3.5 hours of introductory instruction that covers colour mixing, creating tones, and creating two studies of petals, all step by step and in real time, before launching into the four hour section that will take you through creating a painting of two coral charm peonies. The course has been very well received by students around the world, and if it’s something you’re considering but aren’t sure if it’s the right fit, I am happy to put in writing that if it isn’t what you were looking for, I will give you a full refund within the first 30 days. Just wanted to say you voice is so soft and your art is mesmerizing. My Grandma’s favorite flower was a Tulip. She was my best friend growing up and it was a honor to love her the 19 years I got to. My health has taken a horrible turn so it’s taken me away from my studio for almost 3 years now. Definitely missing it. You are a true gem! I’m glad I found you.

Your teachers voice comes through with clarity in these wonderfully produced video series. I’m now about to binge more😁 I do have a question or two (if you’re okay with spilling more nuggets of information☺️) with regards to something that’s not on this video and that’s the varnishing. Thanks again for the high quality videos. Your very generous with the information that you put in them-the true artist’s way.
Hi Sharon! I’m happy to answer your questions. For varnish, I use the Kamar by Krylon spray. It has a satin/semi-gloss finish. I do thin applications of oil with lots of liquin, so my paintings are usually completely dry within a week or two. Acrylic can be varnished right away. If your oil applications are thicker, you may need to wait several months before varnishing.

I love your paintings, I like how you layered colors the background, the transitions, shadows and the highlights. Hi Marianne, thank you so much for sharing your work and knowledge in the field, it is so inspiring to see! My question is wether the full flower painting course that you have put together for Acrylic painting could be used for oil painting? Or do you have a course for painting flowers in oil painting as well?
Hi Desirée! I have had a few people start in acrylic then paint in oil over top, so you could certainly modify it, but much of the information in the opening is about working with acrylic. I'm hoping to release an oil painting course for flowers in a year from now, probably in the fall of 2025. I'm working on a colour mixing course for acrylic right now, followed by oil, with an oil landscape course in the summer of 2025. That's the plan, anyways!!!

Thank you so much! I am currently working on a full length acrylic painting flower course that will be available through my website in the fall. Once that's complete I'll be tackling an oil flower 🥰
You know, you paint just like I do. A little at a time across the canvas. I've heard art teachers here on you tube say that's a big no no. I tried painting like they did. Sweepingly and in large strokes but it just doesn't work for me. I find it very sloppy. Finally I see someone who does extraordinary work in my painting style. I know you're busy but I see you actually respond to people. Can I ask you, do you print your pictures out off the computer and if so what kind of paper do you use, because that's key. Gloss or matte photo paper? Thanks so much. Another breathtaking painting.
Hi Terry, it all depends on the subject that I’m painting! With flowers, I do tend to move in small sections at a time. On the crow painting I’m currently working on, I blocked in the whole thing, and I’m about to go in to do detail. Flowers just feel right to do it all at once to capture the delicacy, whereas the feathers on my crow and the details in landscapes seem to require multiple passes. I actually have my reference photos printed off for me at Staples. I tend to use glossy, as I find the matte flattens my colors. I find it’s cheaper to do so, because one print costs just over a dollar, versus having a fancy set up at home. I hope this helps!
@@MarianneVanderDussen Yup, Yup, lol, that's what I do when painting animals. I'll have to check out those vids of yours too. A little mesmerized with your florals right now. Yes, and I go back over it again and maybe again. I do have a decent printer so I'll give that a try first and keep staples in mind too. So you're moving to North Bay?! Wonderful! Maybe moving to New Liskeard in the spring. If you ever have a show I'll be sure to be there. Thanks again for the great advice. You're a real inspiration.

I WOULD love to paint the tulips. Do you have detailed information of the drawing, colour mixing and tips of colours to use for brilliance and contrast? Please let me know if you offer a course on this painting. Violeta Oakville Ontario Canada
Hi Violeta, thank you so much for leaving a comment! To answer your question, unfortunately I filmed this tutorial prior to my channel’s surge in growth, and I didn’t preserve any of the footage after I finished editing it. So unfortunately, this tutorial is all I have for these tulips. My plan is to add multiple oil floral tutorials to this channel in the year to come, but I likely won’t start painting and filming until 2025 since I’m working on a colour mixing course I do have a flower painting course for acrylic, however if you’re looking for oil, it will probably be about a year before a full course is added. If you’re interested in the acrylic course, here’s the link, and you can use code TH-cam30 to take $30 off. I’m Canadian like you, and live north of you in northern Ontario, but the prices are in US dollars simply because that is where the vast majority of my students live. I hope this helps, and keep an eye on this channel for future oil flower paintings! 🤍 courses.mariannevanderdussen.com/offers/sTGLNjHa/checkout
Absolutely love this series. I bought one of your paintings ( the waterfront sunset in North Bay) for my daughter's birthday. It is a show piece in their home. Would love to attend one of your shows someday soon, maybe?
Absolutely! Alizarin has some quinacridone pigmentation in it. Just make sure it’s a permanent alizarin crimson as the colour can be a little fugitive. I’m using alizarin crimson for my most recent acrylic piece and I had to find the permanent hue to avoid fading.
I build positive relationships with photographers I admire! I reach out and ask permission to turn their work into paintings. You can also join free Facebook groups that have lots of available references. Just search “free reference photos” and you’ll find plenty 🥰
Hi Ana, this painting is just in oil, I did a quick layer in the background in acrylic burnt umber just to get the right tone in place so I could work over it right away. But the rest of the piece is entirely in oil!
I don't have the rights to this particular photograph to distribute it, only to paint it. I will, however, be offering reference photos in the future for people to download!!! If you subscribe to my newsletter you'll be notified when they're available.
Hi Nancy, I don’t have the distribution rights for the photo, that belongs to Teresa Overett, who I linked in the description. I typically work from photos, I find it easier at this stage in my life when I have small kids to be able to drop what I’m doing (particularly since they bring home germs from school all the time). It’s nice to work from a photo which I know won’t wilt if life gets in the way.
Great question! I love both. I think oil has a slight edge because I enjoy the blendability, but I love teaching in acrylic because it’s so accessible.

I don't have the rights to this particular photograph to distribute it, only to paint it. I will, however, be offering reference photos in the future for people to download!!! If you subscribe to my newsletter you'll be notified when they're available.
Maam I have questions can reply please. How to start beginner like grade 9 from Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🤩💓
You just need to start! Do whatever you can! Draw, paint, and practice.
You never show reference material? Why is that? Is it a photo or a still life set up?
Hi Nancy, I don’t have the distribution rights for the photo, that belongs to Teresa Overett, who I linked in the description. I typically work from photos, I find it easier at this stage in my life when I have small kids to be able to drop what I’m doing (particularly since they bring home germs from school all the time). It’s nice to work from a photo which I know won’t wilt if life gets in the way.
Which one you prefer using oil or acrylic?
Great question! I love both. I think oil has a slight edge because I enjoy the blendability, but I love teaching in acrylic because it’s so accessible.
Hyper-realism. Almost photographic.
Thank you so much! I'm anxious to get back to painting flowers, it's on the docket for this year!
Music too loud and distracting so switched off . Sorry .
