    Hi! I'm late to this video, so I hope you see this. CO2 dissolves directly into the water column very easily; CO2 actually disolves easier into water than O2. The best placement of a diffuser is at the bottom of the tank, so the bubbles have more time to diffuse (along with what you mentioned in the video about surface tension). If you get a CO2 ladder, you will see the bubbles shrink as they climb the ladder, visibly demonstrating CO2 diffusion. The video, "CO2 Diffusion Ladder update" by New England Gardening on TH-cam shows this (sorry I couldn't find a simpler video).
    Thanks for the awesome and informative videos!

    I've found that a reactor type CO2 system saves on the amount needed greatly and you get no bubbles in the aquarium, another bonus if you like that. You could use a reactor with a powerhead for added circulation in a tank as well, that's what I use. The reactor does rob you of some flow, that's something to be aware of. An in-line atomizer works but I find it produces bubbles, an advantage is that it hides the diffuser in case you have an external canister filter or sump. If you like bubbles in your aquarium and the amount of CO2 injected doesn't matter, then go with the simple diffuser which is simple enough but a slow diffusion reactor saves on CO2 and doesn't produce bubbles like the diffuser. Look for the JBL Pro Flora CO2 Taifun, there are others like it out there.

    Nice video as always Alex, thanks for sharing.
    I was at one time considering high light and CO2 for one of my aquariums (125G) until I did some research. Finding any used CO2 tanks near me is almost impossible. When I do they're almost as expensive as buying new. My local welding supply only swaps tanks so buying a nice shiny new one doesn't make sense. The cost of refilling CO2 is cheaper than any of my welding gases so that's a good thing. But add the cost of a high powered light such as a Fluval 3.0, sheeesh. I'll just stick with slow growing low light plants for a while I think.

    I like having the information, but I'm never doing Co2 or high intensity lighting, or delicate rare plants. The fish and shrimp are my thing, always have been. The plants I keep are for the benefit of the fish and the removal of nitrates. I add houseplants to all my rimless tanks.
    Hornwort and guppy grass are my buddies even though I throw out mountains of it every week to keep it from taking over.
    Love Java fern, crypt Parvati, annubias, buces, nothing fancy, but I have nano tanks, shrimp and nano fish, so not a big foot print for a lot of fancy prima donna plants.
    Don't get it twisted though, I love looking at, and oooing and ahhhing over people's fantastically planted tanks using Co2 and high tech gorgeous plants. Truly love seeing them, including yours, but have never had a desire to switch my focus from the fish and shrimp to the high tone plants.
    I do so appreciate the knowledge, time, and expense folks put into these stunning plant tanks, but that is not for me and I've always known that.
    Another one of the many reasons I love your channel is because you do it all and have the experience and knowledge to educate people about it.
    Me, I'm always more interested in your filterless, no heater, tanks that fish and plants thrive in. Yet I still like learning and having the knowledge of other systems.

    Question on the defuser segment. Am I to assume placing the defuser just below surface is sufficient for CO2 saturation?
    Your nuts and bolts detail around your topics and ‘Oh and by the way’ tips are greatly appreciated.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes its good to put the co2 diffuser shallow, unless you have a reactor or super super fine bubbles that actually mix in the line , canister or a glass capture spiral glass... but those are less common in most tanks

    • @kellygordon103
      @kellygordon103 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishtoryI think you'd find that most of the CO2 gets dissolved in the water before the bubble breaks the surface. You would get maximum absorption if no bubbles ever broke the surface.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว

      @kellygordon103 that's half correct. If the co2 bubble spray has been made small enough, the co2 will be diffused and mixed into water, like an inline co2 rig or a reactor. However if bubbles. The size of peas or larger are flowing, the surface tension of the water and "stickiness" of water causes gases or even other liquids rise to the top without much mixing

    • @kellygordon103
      @kellygordon103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fishtory I'd be willing to bet money that if you did a comparison test with CO2 injection diffused high in the tank then low in the tank to allow more time for the CO2 to dissolve, you would get a higher dissolved CO2 concentration in the water with the diffuser lower in the tank. Once those CO2 bubble breach the surface, dissolution stops and that gas is lost. This isn't the same as cavitation bubbles popping and re-dissolving.

  • @mattdowling955
    @mattdowling955 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And lastly can you explain why someone would opt dor a co2 reactor instead of bottled co2. From my understanding a bottle refil and the frequency required to fill isn't all that costly

    • @KoroWerks
      @KoroWerks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I understand it's the benefit of being able to get citric acid and baking soda at the grocery store.
      Most people have a welding supply or home brew store or something where they can get pressurized CO2 for an affordable price, but that's not true for everyone.
      A reactor/generator allows you to avoid using those pressurized systems, avoid the need for a pressure regulator, and avoid having to go to a specialty store to pick up CO2.
      You can also take the tank lid off and fill it with dry ice from the grocery store in a pinch, but it's not as easy to do with a bigger tank, more the paintball/soda stream sized pressure cans.
      You also have to store a CO2 canister upright, and a generator can theoretically be smaller or made into a different shape that fits your space better than your standard CO2 cylinder.
      I think long term a pressurized system is cheaper, but a generator has a lower up front cost.
      Not an expert, this is just what I've read about the subject.

    • @mattdowling955

      @Koro Werks that's a perfect answer, covered my question and explained a few other things for me 👌 it's definitely a mission trying to setup something on a budget, especially here in Aus as many of the well-regarded and affordable regs that get mentioned aren't always available here, so becomes a bit of a lucky dip if you can't quite afford the premium brands

  • @kellygordon103
    @kellygordon103 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love your videos, but your explanation of the CO2 bubble behaving like cavitation bubbles is completely wrong. Once the bubbles break the surface, they are of no use to your tank anymore. The dissolving of the gas is mostly a function of bubble size and time of contact underwater.

  • @josemontalvo4532

    Hello Mr. Alexander,
    The little metal bumping things on the grips for your CO2 Regulator is called, “Diamond Knurling.” It helps your fingers to grip the knobs. To absolutely be safe on the CO2 tank, you should have Gas silicone tape on the threads to prevent leaking. I enjoyed your presentation and costs of setting up a CO2 dosing costs. By the way you present your ideas, I can tell you’re an atheist. That’s ok, but arguments for a creator are just as valid as your views. FYI. You tend to be a little bias a towards Aquarium Coop products. I use Cory products too, but you don’t have to be so obvious about it. I’m not completely sold on that Father Fish video on changing water. You were too easy on the old man’s views.

      Did you see my livestream tonight, i laid it out clear where we differ. And thanks...i forgot that magical knurling word! Great word. Im not an athiest either, im agnostic but i attend Christian mass with my wife sometimes, we got married using jewish (my families religion) christian and buddhist symbology and ceremonies.
      As for aquarium coop, im not sure i know what you mean. I get people super mad that im calling them out sometimes and super mad if i say they do anything good. I live 4 miles from the store and have shopped there/bought fish there since the time they opened essentially.
      All the co2 kits between about 75 and 150 dollars are basically going to be reiterations of some mass produced chinese no name brand, as are coops..but with a few tweaks.
      It seems you can't make everyone happy all the time, so i go issue by issue. Also, i was debating going harder on Lou, but weve known one another 6 years of so, and the point of the interview was to clarify the controversy of his own words and shorts... not my beliefs- hence why i shared my beliefs and opinions in the video today.
