Hi George. Thanks for another great video and explanation of how to use CO2. Always helpful to those starting with aquascaping.
I just thought I‘d mention that we lost a great aquascaper this week - Felipe Oliviera. I, as many others, am shocked at this sad news and I was wondering if it were possible for you to perhaps feature Felipe’s work and give him honour for what he has brought to thw world aquascaping community. I believe that us peers should acknowledge him in our content on our channels. Do what you feel is right.
    Rest In Peace Filipe (1975 - 2023).
    Much love from Downunder.

Well explained. Currently I don't do CO_2 injections, just low-tech, but I plan to redo my 160l tank later with CO_2 pressurized system. For me there are 2 real downsides of CO_2 injections: Sudden discharge as mentioned and the expense: more light, more ferts, replacing broken parts.
From my experience, yeast DIY system is pretty safe, but maintenance heavy. High pressured system doesn't required much maintenance, but if not set properly and checked daily, it can be fatal.
In my last attempt I had a few accidents, which could have been caused by:
    * High temperature (27 ˚C) because of the Ramirezi cichlids.
    * Bottle lying on the side: While not recommended, some would claim it's no big deal.
    * Letting gas run out to 1/4 capacity.
    * Even if it's high-quality Camozzi valve, the needle valve might be faulty.
At one point the amount of gas going to the tank would rise, dropchecker would go green-yellow and in few hours fish would start dying if I didn't do something. Next time I will need to play it more safe, maybe even with ph probe wired into some failsafe.
Like I mentioned above, I'd like to redo one tank with CO_2, but mostly for lush and dense growth or a carpet. It's near impossible doing dense carpet or bushes of pearl-weed without CO_2. On the other hand it's also hard to tell which plant won't grow at all without CO_2. Good substrate, decent light and even Nesea sp. Gold thrives, while Dwarf Hairgrass dwindles away.

The question in my mind is how could these plants survive in the wild with much lower levels of CO₂? It must be either these plants are domestic cultivars which have become used to extra CO₂ or they are typically emersed in the wild. Yes I know there are naturally carbonated water systems in nature but these are relatively rare.
EDIT: I did a small amount of research and CO₂ levels in the wild are often higher than in an aquarium without injection. Essentially the CO₂ comes from decaying organic matter in the mud. Other sources include gaseous diffusion from the air, which is higher in wild systems and natural carbonated sources depending on geology. A negligable amount comes from exhalation by aquatic organisms.
It is also true that a lot of the plants sold in the aquarium trade are natually emersed.

Hi George, you said you use a food grade oil in the bubble counter. The instructions on the inline defuser say do not use oil in the bubble counter as it will reduce the efficiency of the defuser. What is your experience of this.

I have a question about used difuser. Is there a difference in the way you connect it? It looks like yours is with CO2 hoseing further from the input. Doesn't it work better if the hosing is near to the input (filter output)? Did you try it?

Thanks for the explanation. I have a couple of questions I think were not answered:
    1. Is the CO2 injection working the same exact period the lights are on?
    2. When you have to refill the CO2 bottle, I imagine is not something done overnight, but takes a few days. Does the tank ecosystem suffers during CO2 absence?

    Hi George
Just been speaking to Dave at AG and he suggested i watch this as i am thinking of going from low to high tech on one of my aquariums. My question is about inlet and outlet pipes. Most inlets are at the top of tanks. I cant understand why this in surely if they were at the bottom it would give the microbubbles longer in the water column as bubbles
    obviously rise?
    Cheers
    Brian

Hi George hope you are well. I was reading a 14 year old forum which you contributed to regarding co2 injection directly into the inlet pipe of canister filters. You mentioned at the time that you was aware there are claims that this can damage the filter but you have never actually witnessed it yourself. What are your thoughts on this now, would you inject co2 into the inlet of a canister filter?

  • @Christian_Danielsen

Great video. According to my CO2 supplier its no problem if the cylinder is lying down/tilting - as long as the outtake is higher than the bottom of the cylinder, since it contains both gas and liquid. That way only gas comes out and not liquids. They have been in the CO2 business for 40+ years

A question: If you have a filter that is not "strong enough". Like low 5x the flow of the aquariumsize. Will it help to mount another filter/streamer/pumphead to increase the flow next to the outlet of the filter so the flow in the aquarium is 10x, but the 5x is only for the external canister?

Hey George, Great video but still have some questions regarding my tank. I've been running a co2 set (colombo reactor) on my 55L tank and i'm also using a co2 checker which is perfectly green. Recently my tank has quite alot of green hair algae. Does this have something to do with my lighting or co2? I'm using a JBL LED Solar light, usually on 40-50%. I've got a (starting to) carpet of monte carlo, which is also starting to turn a bit brownish. Using a eheim experience 250 filter and dosing the easylife fert once a week... Any tips for me? Tnx a lot!

I had to play around with my CO2 system to achieve the magical 30ppm level of CO2 in my water column. I have my needle valve set to 4bs. My lights come on at 10:00 am but my CO2 system comes on line at 08:00 am. This way by the time my light come on there is at least 10ppm of dissolved carbon dioxide within my water column. And my lights stay on until 1930 with my CO2 system shutting down at 1730. My air stones come on at 1900 and my shortly after my lights turn off. During the dark period I run my air stones to help maintain the CO2 levels produced by the fish and plants at low levels.
